Prime Your Brain

Visions of The Future [Part 2 of 3]

We all need visions for the future. By playing a simple trick on your brain you can “Prime” it to look out for events that will seem like serendipity to you. And since your brain can’t separate fact from fiction. You can tell stories to your brain and it will try to make them “True” ūüôā
This is Part 2 of 3 about Visions of The Future.

“It doesn’t matter what you pick. It just matters that you pick. The reason people don’t wanna pick is, because then they have to claim it. You pick that? You didn’t pick this? Better to pick nothing.”

Use Storytelling [It’s the only way to remember anything]

Jenny √Ökerman

Jenny √Ökerman – Talking Brain Science

I have been on an interesting seminar in Gothenburg. We started out early with Jenny √Ökerman giving a free public speaking about how we can use the brain to achieve what we want. She is a Swedish Brain Scientist who gave a very entertaining speech about the brain. She goes briefly into what I talked about before. That the brain stores everything as stories. It can not tell apart fact from fiction. You know when you dream and all the crazy stuff seems so real. Even flying that I do from time to time feels so normal in your dreams. I also met a new good friend on the train up and recommended the book “The Storytelling Animal” by Jonathan Gotschall to him. This is one of the best books that I have listened to. It gives you great insight into how your storytelling organ inside your skull works. Jenny mentions how use simple bizarre story to remember everything on a shopping list.

The Brain stores everything as Stories – WE just need to help it by telling better stories

A story like this can’t be ordinary for the brain to remember it. The brain remembers all new stories it are exposed to. It’s what the brain are made for. It’s what the brain lives for.

Can you be Leonardo Da Vinci? [Seven steps on the road towards an awesome mind]

Can you be anything like Leonardo Da Vinci? Jenny Talks about the myths and truths of using both sides of the brain. We should use as many centers in the brain at the same time when doing everything. We may not be as genius as Leonard but here are 7 steps that will take you closer to becoming great. They can be found in my blog: How can you be a modern Ninja. and in the audio-stream from SXSW: Design Like Da Vinci: Leonardo’s Sketching Lessons.

7 Steps to Everyday Genius

1. Be curious. You should be constantly learning new stuff.
2. Test knowledge. Learn from your mistakes.
3. Improve your own experience. Make it multi-sensory.
4. Embrace ambiguity, paradox and uncertainty
5. Whole-brain thinking (science / art, logic / emotion)
6. Know the physical world (grace, dexterity, fitness)
7. Use system-thinking. See interconnections

Step out of your Comfort-Zone [That’s when Creativity and Courage happens]

Jenny spins it further by saying that:

“All new knowledge and progress is preceded by confusion” — Jenny √Ökersson

It is when the brain is confused that it steps out of its comfort-zone and try solve things in a different way that it is used to. The Brain actually likes being confused. It feels good. Think about that the next time you feel confused. This is what Peter Sengie calls Creative Tension.
The gap between vision and the current reality is called the Creative Tension. This is the space on with the magic of creativity happen.

You must be willing to leave current reality. Step out of your comfort zone towards an unknown future. A future only visualized in a dream. You must expose your art to others. Thus becoming vulnerable. Only then does creativity and empathy happen. Both Bren√© Brown and Seth Godin explains this well ūüôā

See my blog-post on empathy: The Way of Empathy [The Beast with 2 Hearts]

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

In all her 12 years of research Bren√© Brown can not find a single example of Courage, Spiritual courage, Moral courage or Leadership courage, when someone didn’t first step out of their comfort zone and became vulnerable.

Have the courage to do what is possible. Just not convenient.

Prime Your Brain [Tell your story to your brain]

Like Jason Silva says: “You can Prime Your Brain towards a goal you want to reach”. As your brain can’t separate fact from fiction: Everything that you or someone else tell your brain makes sense. Because the Brain even can’t tell the difference between someone else talking to it or you doing the talking yourself.

Your brain is a goal achieving machine. Your subconscious is hard at work on achieving your visions and dreams of the future. So start priming your own brain, by telling your brain what visions of the future it should have in mind.

Serendipity is just that. Filling your mind with patterns on your path. To be on the lookout for. And then your subconscious mind will be on constant watch for these patterns and make them happen. So here is what you can do:

1. Start by thinking about where you are a year from now.
2. Start backtracking ever step that you took to get there. Think about the big events on the way.
3. Now think about the first step you took a year ago.
4. Start Walking, Running, Jumping, Climbing and Flying to get there!

Look to the Moon

Look To The Moon – Run To The Hills

It’s Prime Time! [Look To The Moon & The Stars]

Who are  you a year from Now? Should we really ask questions like this? I think we must! We should not dwell on the past. But we should revisit it from time to time in order see the contrast to our present. Most of us should focus on the now. To keep things moving and operating. But some of us must make it our mission to study the past. And others must fantasize about the future and create stunning Science Fiction to inspire us all. We need all these skills.

The Past like the future does not really exist. They are both fantasies created in our minds. The Future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our minds in order to help shape the world we want to live in.
The Past unlike The Future has actually happened. The Past, as represented in our mind, is a mental simulation too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened. Most of us believe our memory is filled with reliable info we can access at will. Not so. But memory isn’t an outright fiction. It is merely a fictionalization of what took place. Memory is an unreliable self-serving historian. It’s there to help us make decisions that help us along for the bumpy ride that reality is.

‚ÄĒ Jonathan Gottschall from The Storytelling Animal

But even people who focus on the present benefits from priming their brain in some way. Because we need a larger goal for our modern society than Consumerism. Something to aspire to. And as we all need to be part of this vision, we all need some connectedness and some priming with the environment around us. We are not just the Animal who collects food or money on a daily basis. We are something more. And we can become so much more. We can put a Dent in the Universe!

7 Questions About The Last 20 Years

Visions of the Future [Part 1 of 3]

Why is visions so important? In this series of 3 I will talk to you about why I think so. The first 2 will go into personal visions answering these 2 questions: Who are you 20 years from now? & Where are you a year from now? In part 3 I will go into depth about creating shared visions for the future of our tribes, companies and societies. This is Part 1 of 3 about Visions of The Future.

[010]
Visit Earth 20 Years from now [What Stories should Intergalactic Tourists tell?]

Think of a future where we have some intergalactic tourists visiting Earth. They are living in your collective tribe using Milky Way BnB [#MilkyWayBnB]. Here are 7 questions you can ask yourself about what you are going to tell them:

  1. What would you like them to see and visit?
  2. What stories will you tell them about Earth?
  3. How did you pull it together and help build up the flourishing society that you live in today?
  4. On what projects did you pull weight during the last 20 years?
  5. What was the first big tipping-point that lead to the radical transformation of how we live together today?
  6. What mattered most?
  7. Who did you do it with?
Alien Tourist

What will you tell this Alien Tourist 20 years from now?

These are hypothetical stories that we can play around with. This is what Sci-Fi is really about. Not some crap action movie where society looks and feels exactly the same as today with a few tweaks. We need to use our imagination to provoke some new radical thinking. It’s only then that things will start to happen and new emerging systems will appear.

I want to create a space. Where you can  have these kind of discussions. And I want to combine it with a #MakerSpace. What I call a Future-Space or a Future-Dojo. We can both experiment with sustainability and discuss how we can live sustainable together. A Place to hang around with lots of different kinds of people who do not think alike. Not just the new hot MakerSpaces. Whoever awesome as they seem. I get the feeling that they are very polarized as well. Prove me wrong.

And in 20 years time I’ll be running a whole network of Future-Dojos as a Future Captain¬†and a Creativity¬†Ambassador.

There is nothing better for Self-Growth than somebody challenging your own viewpoint — Richard Gerver

Paint Lots of Pictures [Prime You Brain]

What will the future look like? The only way to find out, is to paint lots of pictures. Pictures of a future imagined. Take the ones we like the most, and make them into visions, to have before us as we travel, on our path ahead. Together we can Prime our brains in this way, to go into an emerging future. WE make our future happen. Not someone else. This is our time. Not Kings and Emperors of The Olden World. The new networked society is finally here.

It’s time to Level¬†Up!

No fate! But what we make ūüôā

Elysium [What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

This is part 3 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

Also check out my Storytelling post on Cloud Atlas, Iron Man 3, Oblivion and Princess of Mars.

[007]
The Elysium Future¬†[What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

We must use Storytelling and Science Fiction to envision a new Future. And to raise important question for an ongoing dialog about the future and where we are going. We should draw parallels to our past and present to give us better picture of who we are and how we build our society. Why do we go forward?

The Elysium Future

The Elysium Future

So it was time for my 4th movie trip of the summer. Previous trips that I have discussed are Man of Steel, Pacific Rim and The Wolverine. Now it was time for the one story that would savior them all. Elysium was going to be epic judging from the imagery and visions I’ve seen. Maybe a next Matrix? Nah.

It’s a basic action story with to many logic loopholes. It’s set in a dystopic future that tries to provoke with cheap points about hell on Earth and heaven in space for the rich and powerful. On earth we have high-tech robot making facility made with human workforce in the worst Tayloristic way. Where threats of sacking is used to motivate people to do their best quality job. Not riming well with Johan Lange’s LUCKc-conept and Daniel Pink’s findings what motivates people. Elysium is also defended by a one man crazy mercenary back on Earth? Not Plausible.

Social Media is always missing from today’s Sci-Fi movies [Why is that?]

And where is the Internet and Social Media? By now everyone should have Google Lenses built into their eyes at birth with access to everyone of earth. Or at least the old and the powerful that had their inserted before the catastrophes.

“Many believe the brain separates fiction from reality. In “reality” the brains stores everything as stories. Humans are creatures of Neverland. We live in Neverland because we can’t not live in Neverland.” — Jonathan Gotschall

Yet again a disappointment. Now I am mad. A book writer would never get away with it. As I’ve said before in my post on Pacific Rim. It’s now time to use the power of Storytelling for what it is. “Profound lessons that you should internalize“. The brains already scans the story for what message to learn. If there is none or a bad one the brain still learns it. It’s time to step up that game if we are to move into the future with a Vision Worthy of the Human Race. Movie makers should listen to what Seth Godin and Neil Gaiman says. Make Good Art. When your art fails. Make Better Art. Don’t just copy old formulas. Or try to make lesser art by picking parts from other movies. Take the best parts and make something new and better. Be Bold.¬†Make Better Art.¬†

Elysium should be about a dystopian future. But one where the¬†Mega corporations and the¬†Banks¬†have taken control of Earth. They are run by some rich power-hungry Families that has taken over all power on earth, including the Military. In order for that to work they¬†must have taken total control over the internet and Social Media. A complete¬†Surveillance Society¬†where you can get to anyone that as much as lifts a finger against the authority. Rebels can only make a resistance in rogue secret networks using the network against itself with supreme hacker skills. On Earth we have a complete chaos on an environmental disastrous planet where focus for the masses consists in finding clean water and food for the day. The Powerful remains in power with the help of the Robot Armies of the Mega Corporations with drones everywhere as human soldiers couldn’t be trusted. — Now that is better plot in the right direction. Maybe I should help Hollywood out?

Neil Gaiman - Make Better Art!

Neil Gaiman – Make Better Art!

We have a responsibility to tell better stories! Business as usual won’t cut it on Earth anymore. When making this huge Sci-Fi Storytelling Projects we have a¬†responsibility to put together a large team of Futurist that can try to imagine and show us what one or another future might look like depending on what path we trod down. Make Better Art! Make Better Stories!

Stories I love [Continuum, Dollhouse and Hemlock Grove]

“I can’t change the past but I’m here hoping to change the future” — Jim Martin, Continuum

Well the summer wasn’t a complete dry on good Storytelling. I got to see 3 great TV-Series. First was the second season of Continuum. It really makes me think about what future we want to create and that Mankind can do it together.¬†The season finale is just Epic for a true mind.

“Change the Architecture of the Future Change the Architect of the Future” — Jason, Continuum

Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse also really grew on me as I was watching season 1 on Netflix. The final episode “Epitaph” was also Epic Storytelling.

Why what’s your fantasy? Oh. I’m okay right here in the real world, thanks. No, no, you have a fantasy, okay? We all do. We need it to survive. — Doll House

Both are just the way a “Real” Sci-Fi show should be. Just on the border of being to complex. It should have you sitting on the edge of the sofa or even standing up, mind racing and heart beating faster. Challenging us to keep up all the time ūüôā And finally we have Hemlock Grove also on Netflix. A very nice story about Werewolfs and other magic set in a small town in Pennsylvania in the spirit of Twin Peaks and Vampire Diaries. With a huge secret plot that is revealed a little piece at the time.

Ouroboros & Yin Yang

Ouroboros & Yin Yang

In both Hemlock Grove and Continuum is also the mention of¬†Ouroboros. I saw the episodes on the same night and it freaked me out ūüôā

The Future [Almedalen FTW]

[006]
This is what the future looks like [Almedalen shows the way]

What can we expect from the future? What will it bring us? These are both valid questions. But they are both wrong. The right questions to ask is: What can the future expect from us? What will we bring into the future?

The first week in July has been one of the best weeks in my life. I have been visiting The Island Gotland. Some 3 hours by ferry from the east coast of Sweden in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The main city is called Visby and it’s a beautiful city from the Middle ages with preserved lime stone city-walls. It has some of the best summer weather in Sweden with lots of sun. It’s also the location of one of the most remarkable events in the word. During the first week of July each year over 20,000 people travel here to a place called Almedalen, to meet and discuss the future together. It’s an extraordinary mix of Scientists, Politicians, Environmentalists, Teachers, Schools, Entrepreneurs, Companies, Social Media Experts, Journalists, Bloggers and Health People… Well just about anyone interested in taking part in this large mingle party. All events and seminars are open to all and free of charge. It’s what modern democracy is all about. The new Networked Society in its infancy.

Cross-Fertilization and Teamwork is key for the Future — Lord Sillion

Visby Ruin

Visby is full of beautiful Ruins

What did I take away from this extraordinary week?

That there are 3 ways to look upon the future.

1. We can watch it happen. We can just sit down in our sofas and watch passively as the future unfolds before our eyes. Like watch TV and not taking part in the Stories told. Even in Almedalen I think some people are doing just that. Listening to what the experts are saying and nodding along.

2. We can make it happen. Given the ability to see and shape the path before us we will take part in doing so. The feeling of autonomy is present here and makes our life seem more meaningful. I believe them many people are in Almedalen for just this reason.

3. We can shape the future. Like I put on one of my T-Shirts I had made for Almedalen: Lord Sillion – Architect of the Future. We can be this Architects. To give fate a helping hand to shape our shared Destiny.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself” — George Bernard Shaw

Futurist [Holistic Thinking Ninja]

I’ve also come to realization that I want to be / am a Futurist. As all I ever do all day long is think about the future. I have recently seen and heard both the Futurists, Jason Silva and Melissa Sterry, on the podcast London Real. They did really convinced me of what I am and what I want to do. The helped me put word on what I am. A Futurist.

And all Futurist are different and all have a different approach. My approach is that I am a Holistic Thinking Ninja. I will explain it here in this Blog from the Future: The Kamiwaza Way [I Want to be a Godlike Ninja Futurist]]. I think the Futurist has always been inside me. But I realised it for real when I first started using internet in 1993 and when I first saw Ghost In The Shell. Read about it: My Fisty social Media Experience.

School Futurists [Every School should have a Futurist]

I was on a seminar in Almedalen about the school “Fryshuset” [Ice House]. They have something called “Klassmorfar” [Class Grandpa]. It’s a person in school who is there as an extra adult. To provide social comfort and bridge the gap to society. Someone all children and students can talk to about everything in life. The it dawned on me. Every school also needs a futurist. A person who can be there help the children envisions a better tomorrow that we can build together. To inspire them to take part in shaping their own future. To engage in discussion about what the future might look like. To make the dream big and dream bold about the future.

I filmed most of the seminar on Bambuser here:  #Fryshuset.

The School Spring event

#afkAlmedalen – The School Spring event

#afkAlmedalen: The School Spring [Why School?]

The people I went to Almedalen with are all tied together with a project called “Skolv√•ren” [The School Spring]. We are here to start asking the question: Why? Like Simon Sinek says. Why School?

Skolvåren started as a conversation on Twitter using the Hashtag #Skolvåren just 5 months prior to Almedalen. Just before Almedalen we had our first real Meetup in Varberg called #afkVarberg. The Meetup was a fantastic event with so many new contacts and new ideas for the Future of School. There I also gave a Pecha Kucha type of Speech in Swedish on why I think Games, Play and Storytelling is essential in all learning processes.

Johan Ronnestam held a great speech on that I filmed about The Future of School in 2 parts. Part 1, Part 2. You can find the rest on Skolv√•ren’s Bambuser page .

So naturally we called our event in Almedalen for #afkAlmedalen. I filmed part 2 on Bambuser about what #Skolvåren is.

We also wanted to change the format that many other events has. Instead of having a lecture or a panel of “experts” we had ¬†chairs in rings with no tables so that we could have small open group dialogs.

Also¬†City of Malm√∂ and Malm√∂ University¬†had an event about:¬†The school’s responsibility for a sustainable society – an example of the opportunities and challenges. See it in Swedish here: ¬†Skolans ansvar f√∂r ett h√•llbart samh√§lle.

What is Culture for?

Pier Luigi Sacco visited Almedalen for one of the few seminars in English talking about What Culture Is For. See the Video here:
What is culture for? The interaction between culture and commerce for regional development.

Culture has started to drive the innovation in the society. This is what what many more like Seth Godin and Brené Brown are talking about too as I have mentioned in my blog.

We Make Future [What do we want to make better?]
Another event that took place in Almedalen was a new project called “Vi G√∂r Framtid” [We Make Future]. @ViGorFramtid. A project to bring forth people who works actively to shape the future as creative entrepreneurs.

We also talk about what do we want for next years Almedalen. What format we want on the events and what do we want to make better for next year.

The Human Quest

The Human Quest

The Human Quest [Project Homeworld]

Johan Rockstr√∂m and Mattias Klum took part in a event on the first day where they talked about there work that ended up in their book “The Human Quest“. How can we build a sustainable society from both a social, an ecological and an economical viewpoint? The scientists all know what must be done yet it’s going in the wrong direction in many parts of the world. Many decision makers has invested a great deal prestige in making the wrong decisions. And they are not about to lose face in saying they where wrong anytime soon. The very clear-sighted Mark Blyth explains very well all that is wrong with our system today in his talk at the RSA: The Austerity Delusion.

Here is a write up of the monday sustainability event in Swedish.

There was also many events about a Sustainability. In fact it was the most common topic of the 2300 events this year. I went to a few of them. And it’s all clear like Mark Blyth says. If we want to have a sustainable society before it’s too late we must create Economic Incentives sooner rather than later if it is to happen.

My own name for The Human Quest would be Project HomeWorld. Referring to that this actually a spaceship we are living on. And when we start thinking about it that way it much easier to grasp and envision what earth really is to us. Our only home. We can’t buy a new one.

2030 [The Think Tanks think about the Future]

There was also several Think Tanks present like Kairos Future, Respect and Global Utmaning. They had whole day together about a Sustainable Welfare State in 2030. Karios Future also ran a series of breakfast seminars about what our society might look like in 2030 with different angles. They can all be seen here: Kairos Future i Almedalen 2013. I went to the second one about How we should Work in 2030 and the discussion was not about 2030 but rather about today and tomorrow. But apparently this was the only one that was bad. The last one was about building a New Community for 2030 and was rather good.

“Nobody can tell us who we are, Julian. We create our own future, that’s the only destiny that there is.” — Alec, Continuum

Futerra held another interesting seminar What messages about sustainable development can be used on Swedish people? [Vilka budskap om hållbar utveckling går hem hos svenska folket?]

I filmed it with Bambuser in 3 parts here: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Sustainability Questions from a Holistic Perspective [Take the “High”¬†Road]

Why Austerity doesn’t work and why we must invest in our future during bad economic times. ¬†What Mark Blyth doesn’t mention is that the economic engine that drives our modern society is all based in inputs into the system in form of energy and recourses.
Also David Stuckler talks about why Austerity is bad for health and is an evil spiral towards depression and turmoil in this RSA talk: The Body Ecomomic.

Many people are talking about what we must do or how we should do it. Or some just have their head in the sand in full denial. Or Even worse. Most people on Planet Earth have their own daily problems to deal with. But what many don’t realize is that most catastrophes and disasters on Earth has it roots in the neglect of sustainable thinking. We must take the “high” road [As in Elevated] and the Holistic approach in dealing with all problems on Earth.

I also signed up to get into TEDxAlmedalen. I signed up in the first 4 minutes so I was pretty certain to get in. During the Day before we got the mail to see who could go to this very popular event. I went with 2 friends of mine Helena Roth and Maria Gustafsson and it was  very lovely inspiring event. As it had rained in the morning we was blessed with a fantastic summer evening in a lovely garden in the fantastic Visby.

The event was about new world without boundaries and borders. How far can we take Mankind on Planet Earth if we do it together. Even more hints for me that we need create more visions for the future together.

A Rim Vision of the Future

This is part 2 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

Also check out my Storytelling post on Cloud Atlas, Iron Man 3, Oblivion and Princess of Mars.

[005]
Pacific Grim [A Rim Vision of the Future]

We must use Storytelling and Science Fiction to envision a new Future. And to raise important question for an ongoing dialog about the future and where we are going. We should draw parallels to our past and present to give us better picture of who we are and how we build our society. Why do we go forward?

I am a Mech Lover. Somewhere in my heart I just love big moving robots. I don’t know why but maybe you do? So that’s why I had to go and see the latest Mech Movie: Pacific Rim. It starts out great. The first 5 minutes we get a fast walk-through of the events leading up to current situation in the movie. This really feels like we are going to see an epic Sci-Fi movie with great visions of the future. And then… We get nothing of the things promised…

Don’t get me wrong. The Mechs are just awesome and the Action is superb. Expect that apparently they have a sword that is super effective in the fights, but it’s not used at all until the very end.¬†And if this a popcorn movie where you are supposed to leave your brain at the door… Sorry, no can do. I am my brain and so are you. All movies weather are dumb or smart is all about storytelling and it affects us all in some way. There is no excuse to make a dumb movie ever. Storytelling is the ultimate learning and visionary tool and we are using it wrong.

“Storytelling is about Profound lessons that you should internalize.
sugar-coated in an entertaining ride. That are not to challenging but are embedded with deep truths” — Jason Silva

I’ll talk about some of the things missing in the movie below and how it should be.

Mechs are cool! Gigantic Mechs are Awesome!

Social Media [We will just not drop it]

Come on it’s now 2013 and we’ve been using social media for many years. Are all Sci-Fi movies and television shows from now on set in an alternative universe where Social Media didn’t happen? It’s so Sad that they all have to be this way. And it will not be like today. It will have evolved to a whole new level. Try using your fantasy to imagine it for us ūüôā

The Future is a Team Game [Only together can we save Earth]

In the opening there is this great mention of that all nations came together. And then nothing. The science department is a one man show. We are now really starting to see that the future will be a collaborative effort. We are beginning to Crowdfund and Crowd-develop all sort of things at an exponentially growing rate. We are not going to stop that just like that, when a crisis shows up. It’s exactly then that we going to put these tools to really good use. I can see that the design and construction is the effort very large collaborating teams all over the world. We would all join up and contribute to our favorite Mech Design. With this new gigantic Metal Gods we would all bow to them in Awe.

We would proudly fly the team color of our favorite Mech Team.

And speaking of Games. In a future with gigantic Mechs, every aspect of them are going to turn into a game. We would have large virtual simulation games of the Mechs. That way we are going to find the absolute best pilot teams as the winners of massive eSports tournaments. Not the pathetic sparring they have in the movie.

All this should be in the movie…

Storytelling FTW [Let’s Gear Up for Joint Tomorrow]

Movies like these should be an awesome experience in creating a vision in what Mankind is capable of when put under the threat of extinction. We should leave the theater in an absolute astounding sense of awe of what we can do if we all work together against a common enemy. Not just pointless stuff to earn more money. I know that ComicBookGrl19 calls this “The one original film that came out this summer”. But not so. For me this feels like a standard action movie made in the 90-ties.

Storytelling has been around for as long as we have been humans. And it‚Äôs the storytelling itself that first made us into the storytelling chimpanzee we are today. You must embrace fiction. It will make you more empathetic and more able to navigate life‚Äôs problems and dilemmas. — Jonathan Gottschall

Stories pulls us together and unites us with common values. It‚Äôs the core that makes us into a groupish vehicle for our genes to pass down to our offspring. We use them to set a shared Moral Matrix for the group. They create our culture and our entire existence. — Lord Sillion

This is what Storytelling has always been about. Not a whimsical nonsense without wisdom and visions. The Wachowskis showed us with The Matrix over 10 years ago that you can make a cool action movie with deep truths, embedded with philosophy and thought provoking, meaningful visions of the future. As did their main inspiration: Ghost in the Shell before them. And they did it again now with Cloud Atlas.

Read Jonathan Gottschall’s The Storytelling Animal to find out more about how our brain thinks all its thoughts in stories. And read my blog about Storytelling.

Why is this Important? [What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

BackToTheFuture

We don’t need a Time Machine to redesign the Future

Because what we can Envision and Imagine we can build together. It’s how the brain works. It runs on stories. Particular the visual ones. We must stop treating movies and television as dumb entertainment and use it for what it really does. All things we see and experience affects us in some way. We are constantly bombarded with visions and messages. Let’s make them something we can be proud of and aspire to.

It’s time to take the future back. We start by building a common vision of the Future.

I’ll soon talk about how to build a common vision…
And tomorrow I will go and see Elysium. I put my hopes up for Elysium and the Story it will tell.

Read about Elysium here.

What is your Identiy?

[002]
Is you a man or woman of [Insert your “Element” here]?

This is part 1 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

I have been on the Swedish premier of Man Of Steel. It’s by far the best “Superman movie” I have seen. It’s about finding your identity and fitting in. Something we all can relate to.

A persons true identity can often be difficult to discern
even to themselves
Causing one to question their character, their calling, their very existence
For most, time provides clarity
But for others these questions remain unanswered
for an identity can not be fully defined
when it is a guarded secret — Emily Thorne, Revenge

The El Tribe

The El Tribe

Man of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water [Who is he?]

Kal-El is struggling to find his identity on planet Earth where he is a stranger. Yet you don’t have to be from another planet to have the same struggle. It’s a constant battle between fitting in and walking your own path. This battle also highly affected by the people in our own tribe around us and how they judge us.

From this viewpoint it’s a very interesting Superman- and Superhero Movie. Although it’s not as meaty in this regard as I wished it could be. It’s also a Visual and Audial fest of storytelling with an amazing opening from Planet Krypton with a great Russell Crowe as Jor-El. One word to sum it up would be Epic.

Apart from brief line where one of the villains says that they have “No Morality” much of the philosophical thought is great. Of course all thinking higher sentient lifeforms that are able to build a thinking civilization have morality. A code by which we value our intentions, decisions, and actions.

What path should we wander in life. What ever path we walk we have to make sacrifices. Mostly Sacrifice for ourself but sometimes even sacrifices for others. I think many people today in the western world are unaware of this or tries make no sacrifices at all. Constantly trying to please others or one self.

Let us all talk about what we want out of life and what is important for us, the tribe and most importantly of all the whole human civilization so that we can flourish for at least 100 000 years like Krypton did.

The Logical Mind [Or just an irrational emotional one?]

Then what about logic? Today I listened to an interesting podcast about the Irrational Human Mind. Some of us tries to be rational thinking and logical beings others just go by our emotions solely. As most modern action films this film is also ripe with illogical plot holes. It saddens me but as Superman always felt way to illogical for me from the beginning I can look past most of them and concentrate the emotional end philosophical parts of this movie.

How can we make us more like the rational human beings we sometimes think us to be? We can’t do it alone and we can’t do it for ourselves. But we can do it for each others.
Find out more about Dan Ariely and his research on irrationality here.

There are countless ingredients that make up the human body and mind.
Like all the components that make up me as an individual with my own personality.
Sure, I have a face and voice to distinguish myself from others.
But my thoughts and memories are unique only to me.
And I carry a sense of my own destiny.
Each of those things are just a small part of it.
I collect information to use in my own way
All of that blends to create a mixture that forms me and gives rise to my conscience.
I feel confined, only free to expand myself within boundaries. — Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell

Homo Globalis [The Earth Tribe]

I have also been listening to conversation with Carlo Strenger about the new global globally connected Human Tribe member: Homo Globalis. He has book out that is called The Fear of Insignificance: Searching for Meaning in the Twenty-First Century.

Hear it in English here: The Second part is about Homo Globalis

We are all afraid that our lives should be insignificant. This is an irrational fear. Never the less it is also as real as anything else and very important to us. WE must be more aware of this and try to find a meaning for us self and also a bigger meaning in life. A Greater Vision for all of Humanity to strive towards. I think it is really missing today.

I say we set up a goal to build a flourishing society here on earth that can last for
100 000 years. Of course such a vision is incomprehensible for us humans. So we must break it down in very small parts for us to understand.

The Storytelling Way [Be careful what you vis(h)-ualize for]

The best way to learn of this vision is to …. wait for it … Visualise it. That’s right. There needs to go allot more thought into Stories like Man Of Steel. All stories convey a message or a vision. So by giving more thought into how we tell our stories we can start sending the right message. Hopefully James Cameron will continue this path with the sequels of Avatar and show us the way to do it.

Let’s build an Earth together where we live as many small tribes together on a global scale as one Large Global Meta Tribe call Earthlings. And let’s use the best minds and tools to visualise it. — Lord Sillion

Envision our Journey towards a Better Tomorrow #Blogg100

#010 [X]
Where are our journey going? [Core Values, Vision and Mission]

Today I have been listening to Percy Barnevik on Connect V√§st. He is talking about how to be a great leader and his work in the micro credit organization Hand in Hand. Apart from having one of the most entertaining presentations I’ve been to there is something missing. More on that in a moment.

Percy Barnevik

Percy Barnevik

Why are we doing our Journey?
Where is it going?
And how do we travel today?

After him Björn Lindqvist talks about what shall be found in the heart of any organization:

Core Values — Why are we working here? Today we must all weave in socially responsible values in our hearts. That defines the Journey we are taking together.

The Vision — A Mental Picture – of what an organization wants to achieve over time. The North Star! The direction of our journey.

The Mission — The current Quest that we are doing in order to further us along on our journey.

Check out more here: Vision and Mission – What’s the difference and why does it matter? and Mission Statements and Vision Statements.

Can we all be like Google?

The day finishes up with Annika Steiber that have been studying innovation management and what make companies like Google tick. They need to have

Ethics — Don’t be Evil and Do Good for Society.
Ambition — Shoot for the Stars and Change the World.
Behavior – The organization need to be Fast and Scalable. Never to bog down under Bureaucracy and Hierarchy.
Focus — First make a good product then the money will come.

Sustainability Day [Tax resources and not labor]

At the same time Sustainability Day is going on in Stockholm and #SDay are also trending on Twitter at the same tame as #ConnectDagen.

Here the chief economic analyst at the Think tank Global Utmaning, Sandro Scocco, says all the numbers are pointing in the wrong direction. We need change the economic incentives to make things happens. The suggest the same as Geoff Mulgan did in his speech at the RSA.

Tax¬†resources¬†and not labor. In that way everyone will quickly come with smart reusing with what we got. Companies can start rent everything they produce instead of selling it. So that they take full responsibility for the lifecycle. And it’s in their own best interest that all things made is made to endure.

We need to cross-fertilize¬†[Let’s create new meeting places]

Here I also see the second problem opportunity. All the money and entrepreneurs are one event in Gothenburg at the same time as all the scientist and the creative thinkers are at another event in Stockholm. And this are not the same people with the same networks. I know because I have been to both. Here my idea is to create an event where the two worlds can meet. An unconference with focus the social and the Networking. To create new exiting enterprises.

A Vision is something you can Envision. To picture in your mind. This is because sight is our primary sensory system. The brain tries to imagine what it will envision next. Then it asks the eyes if this is the correct vision.

A vision is complex picture in your mind. Let’s create one to be proud of together ūüôā

Here politicians, venture capitalists, scientist and entrepreneurs must create this vision of the future together.
