We Are The World [Live Your Legend]

We Are The World [Live Your Legend]

We Are The World. We Are The Children

It’s as true today as it was 30 years ago. And it will be much truer in the future.

Our Planet Earth

The idea was the world is an emerging system that no one ever had any control over. Just adapt and try to play your little roles as good as you can or cower down and do what you are told. If there ever where architects that had a master plan when designing societies and the known world we will perhaps never know. What we do know, is that thanks to a brand new communications toy, we can now talk to each other all over the world instantaneously.

The question is, what do we have to talk about?

In my own personal experience I have seen a real shift this summer in conversation. For me it feels like we are on the verge on a tipping point. From my little node in the global network conversations, talking points are now far more concerning the future of life on Planet Earth.

Or maybe it’s just that hooked up with more interesting people and that my confirmation bias has tilted me to think so.

Still there are a lot of things going viral that weren’t there before. It started this summer with a fantastic pod with Johan Rockström in Swedish, that where so good that when asked to do it in English he did that too. And people has been sharing all kinds of links with Hans Rosling now in September.

It all boils down to World Climate Summit in Paris December 6th. Our Last chance to make right by all future generations to inherit Planet Earth. Join The Road To Paris 2015.

Also 21 of September is International Day of Peace. Which is close to our hearts here in Sweden as we have big UN Peace conference here in my hometown Varberg in October: Varberg Calling for Peace.

Scott Dinsmore & Live Your Legend!

This latest week has been even more intense for me. Last weekend Scott Dinsmore passed away in accident while on a hike on Kilimanjaro. He is the founder of the large Live Your Legend network all over the globe. And the community his risen up to share their condolences with his surviving wife and family. Like this one from Yazminh.  They are all in the Facebook group [Tribute to Scott Dinsmore, Founder of Live Your Legend]. And Chris Anderson decided to put Scotts now famous TEDx talk with over 2 and a half million views up on the main TED.com site.

I myself a host for Live Your Legend Local in Gothenburg and Varberg has been following Scott for 2 years now. I have eagerly awaited his Live Your Legend RAW update each week that sadly will stop coming now…

I’m so sad that you have left us Scott. You showed me a path that I didn’t think was possible.

We will continue to carry the torch for you Scott!

Scott truly embodied what is was to live a better life on Planet Earth. Let’s all honor his memory by doing the work we can’t NOT do.

Environment. Is. Everything. The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around people already doing them. Choose your friends wisely and brainwash the impossible. – Scott Dinsmore

I have a longer Tribute to Scott and the Revolution coming up soon…

Un-Fuck The World [Set 17 Global Goals]

James Hanusa posted on Facebook that it’s time to Un-Fuck The World! And I signed up on that challenge! We can take the power back from all the greedy systems that using massive amounts of Earth’s resources, to no apparent use at all to further us as a species. We can become architects for all systems on Planet Earth.

I also stated a new MOOC called U.Lab: Transforming Business, Society, and Self. It’s for us Change Makers who wants to transform the world and ourself using a growth mindset. Many of us feel called now like never before. And we are spreading it on Social Media. We are more 30,000 talking this MOOC and using the hashtag #ULab.

Spread the Global Goals. Yesterday Stephen Hawking shared a really heart tearing video message about what we must do to save our home this year together by setting up  17 Global Goals that our leaders should follow.

We need Everyone to tell everyone!
The more people we talk to about it the more important it becomes.  And it truly feels the way now. Like we are on mission now. To do one thing that matters. If we don’t pull it together in 2015 we might as well through in the towel and jump ship. Jump the Spaceship Earth. Expect that we can’t just jump of Earth anytime soon and go live on Mars.

So lets just stick to Plan A. The only plan we have.
Do give ScottStephen and Rockström a listen and tell me what Plan A is for you?

Stephen Hawkin - The Global Goals

Stephen Hawking – The Global Goals

Hello Everyone. Stephen Hawking here.

2015 is the year world leaders signs up to the global goals.

They are an ambitious to-do list to eradicate poverty, save the environment and make the world a fairer place for everyone.
Where every woman and every man has the chance to live a healthy secure life full of opportunity and love.

The more people who know about them, the more likely our leaders are to stick to them.
So this is our attempt to let every person in the world to know what is at stake.
People can not hide from their rights if they do not know what the are.

I would be hugely grateful if you would share this video with your friends, family and fans and ask them to search for global goals online.
To save the world we need everyone to tell everyone.
I’m very aware of the preciousness of time. Help us seize the moment.

The time to act is now
Thank you
— Stephen Hawking

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Tonight I have been to a meetup with some fellow entrepreneurs that all joined up for a course in running your own business last fall in Varberg, Sweden. We all met up to share our stories and to do some pitching. We also talked about how we should sell ourself, our products and our services. It was all led by the awesome Jannike and Lovisa, who both radiate some much positive energy where ever they go.

Prep [Be Prepared]

When ever you are going to meet someone do your homework before you meet them. Read up on who they are and what they are passionate about. Show them that you are interested in who they are and what they do. Sincerely.

It’s curios that the knowledge of How To Win Fiends And Influence People are still not common knowledge and taught to every child, despite that is almost 80 years ago the Dale Carnage came out with his famous book and that modern science has come so far as to how to build genuine connection between people.

Pitch [Pitch Black or How To Convey Any Message]

We all need to pitch. We need to pitch our ideas to friends and family. We need to pitch our business proposal to potential clients and investors. It can be a short elevator pitch of 20 to 30 seconds. It can be in the more prepared format that some did tonight with a Powerpoint presentation of 7 slides with 30 seconds speaking time each slide totaling 3 min 30 sec. Or it can be longer really prepared pitch running 15-20 minutes with months of research and work behind it. Like the ones that Oren Klaff does.

pitch-anything-2

The Croc Brain [The Lizard Brain – The Resistance]

If we want to pitch anything we must first get our words, pictures and story past the what Oren Klaff calls the Croc Brain and Seth Godin calls the Lizard Brain. We do that by telling an emotional story that resonates with the receiver. Oren Klaff, who is a professional pitcher of the biggest ideas and deals there is, explains this well in his book: Pitch Anything. Or to just get the best part see or listen to this talk between Oren and Chase Jarvis. Even if his cases are bit extreme and most the time a kind of competitive pitching between people who are trying to “win” at any cost, you can still apply most of his thinking to your everyday pitching 🙂

Pepp [And Boost each other]

Then we have what Seth Godin calls the Connection Economy. This is a very deep topic. I sum it up in my blog post. in short it’s about all this things: Trust, Permission, Remarkability, Leadership, Stories that spread, Connection, Compassion, and Humility. We all want to be noticed and feel important. So it’s all about making your customers, your suppliers and your coworkers feel special. We all need to connect more. We also should seek out people who make us feel good and stay away from toxic people who drag us down. It’s what  true what Scott Dinsmore is always talking about in his Live Your Legend Local concept.

“The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around the people already doing them” – Scott Dinsmore

In honor of that I’m hosting meetups where the main point is to meet up, share our thoughts, ideas and dreams of the future. To pep each other and to hold one another accountable for the plans we all make. Do join us for the next one on February 8th in Varberg. Or do find one in of the other 44 countries all over the world hosting one.

Selling [Don’t Sell, Make A Connection Instead]

We are all in sales now like Daniel Pink says in his book. But sales does not mean what it used to mean. It’s now more than ever to build a connection with your customer and give them what they need.

And don’t try to please everyone or make a product that everyone will want. Because if you try to do this, you will end up with a service or product that no one needs or wants.

Go Make A Ruckus!

The reason I’m so exited about all this is because they I have just finished Seth Godin’s latest audiobook in a form of a 2 hour compilation from his seminars called Leap First.

What am I Making Then?

I’m finally narrowing down what my art is and what I want to spend my time doing.

I will help people and companies to navigate the connection economy. I will offer to make speeches and workshops on how to best flourish in this modern society. I will help develop ideas, visions and strategies for this networked society.

I will create places and events where people can meet and share knowledge and be creative.

I will give the young so-called Hacker-clubs and Hackathons for us more “adult”.

I want everybody to have a curious mind about the future. And I want to teach people how to become more creative and aware  themself and their environment. That is was my first handbook is about.

It’s Your Turn [And My Turn]

Tomorrow it’s my turn. It’s my turn to host one of the over 300 Live Your Legend – World Parties of 2015 in over 70 countries around the world. We are all kick starting the new year by joining in this crazy idea that blown up to be something crazy and real.

Live Your Legend – World Party 2015

Live Your Legend Local kicked of last January with a global world party then. It’s now a year later with many inspiring meetings behind us. So now we step it up. Come join us in Varberg, Sweden or find your local party if you are reading this on January 6th. Else just come to the next metope in February. Here is my take on what it is all about.

Scott Dinsmore - How to Do the Impossible

Scott Dinsmore – How to Do the Impossible

It’s about several things:

Doing The Impossible

We all see people doing impossible things. Things we could only dream of achieving. How then did they do it? And how can you? The universe is a hostile place. Here is on of my favourite quotes of all time to illustrate it. It’s from Terry Pratchett’s book Hogfather:

THERE IS A PLACE WHERE TWO GALAXIES HAVE BEEN COLLIDING FOR A MILLION YEARS, said Death, apropos of nothing. DON’T TRY TO TELL ME THAT’S RIGHT.
’Yes, but people don’t think about that,’ said Susan. Somewhere there was a bed …

CORRECT. STARS EXPLODE, WORLDS COLLIDE, THERE’S HARDLY ANYWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE WHERE HUMANS CAN LIVE WITHOUT BEING FROZEN OR FRIED, AND YET YOU BELIEVE THAT A … BED IS A NORMAL THING. IT IS THE MOST AMAZING TALENT.
’Talent?’

We humans have this amazing talent to make almost anything seem “Normal”. So the best way to make something impossible is to seek out the company of those how are already doing it. Our storytelling human minds will then quickly internalise their stories to make it our own and thus making the impossible a normal thing.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with - Jim Rohn

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with – Jim Rohn

Not Being Alone

Almost all people who has ever made their dreams come alive has done so in the company and with the help of others. Other inspiring supportive people. Who all give their best to make something. So regularly hanging around and meeting people who already does the things you want to do or people who want to make their dreams come true as well, will boost you in making your dreams come true as well.

Start Dreaming and Dancing and Playing

So whether or not you have a dream you can either go find a dream or invent several new ones. It’s not really about “finding your passion”. It’s about living passionately. To get inspired by others and to inspire the people around you. And you want to be happy along the way. Happiness is not the end of your dream. Your dream will come alive if you are happy along the way. So start dreaming and playing and dancing on a daily basis. And your road or journey will become much more real and you will find it much easier to travel.

So it’s my turn to do this. It’s like Seth Godin says in his new inspiring book: It’s always my turn.

Let’s kick of 2015 into the most amazing year yet. A year of hope for the future. A year where we create our own future together.

How to Win Friends & Change your World

We all change every day. Do we want to get smarter, wiser and stronger or just random changes? We think we know how make better decisions as we get older. And yet we always do irrational predictable stuff. The way to come around this by choosing your surroundings and the people you spend the most time with. So how do you get new friends that you can spend more time with? And how do we design our environment so it help us to make better decisions?

Change

How to Win Friends and Influence People [Start by Changing how you treat other people]

Today I did it. Bought the audiobook How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie on Audible and started listen to it. It has been on my to-do list for a long time. I just heard a good interview with Scott Dinsmore on the Podcast Knowledge for Men (episode 39) that it was one of his favourites books. So that finally triggered me to do it. I have read the sum up lists on Wikipedia and thought that, that was it. But no. The book is full with so much insight that it is a marvel for being written in 1937. And there in lies the great mystery.

If they knew back then, by empirical evidence, that it’s great to follow all this advice. Then why aren’t we all doing it today, almost 80 years later. Why aren’t these findings taught to every kid in every school?

Well, I don’t have an answer for that. What we can do is start talking about it and teaching it today.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Here is the first list that I wrote about in my first famous blogpost: Why are we so Groupish? Get a feel for it and if you want more just find the book yourself.

Ways to Make People Like You

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
  2. Smile.
  3. Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
  4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
  5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
  6. Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

How You Really Make Decisions [Mental Shotgun, Confirmation bias and so on…]

I also found the english version of the documentary that we saw here last monday in Sweden with Dan Ariely and Daniel Kahneman about all the ways that our human brain makes thinking errors. Go se it in english here from BBC Horizon: How You Really Make Decisions.

PAW-Kahneman

Daniel Kahneman – How You Really Make Decisions

Since there are som many ways that we can do things the wrong way there is only one way to make things better. To set up the surrounding world so that is helps us and not sets us back. Design institutions, cities, laws, work, processes so that they avoid all the fallacies of the brain. And there is a lot of them. Over 145 to Kahneman’s counting.

So If changing yourself is so hard. Change your surroundings and the people you spend time with instead. Design your environment and what you come in contact with on a daily basis. Then you will come along way — Michael Sillion

Prime Your Brain

Visions of The Future [Part 2 of 3]

We all need visions for the future. By playing a simple trick on your brain you can “Prime” it to look out for events that will seem like serendipity to you. And since your brain can’t separate fact from fiction. You can tell stories to your brain and it will try to make them “True” 🙂
This is Part 2 of 3 about Visions of The Future.

“It doesn’t matter what you pick. It just matters that you pick. The reason people don’t wanna pick is, because then they have to claim it. You pick that? You didn’t pick this? Better to pick nothing.”
Seth Godin, #GoodLifeProject

Use Storytelling [It’s the only way to remember anything]

Jenny Åkerman

Jenny Åkerman – Talking Brain Science

I have been on an interesting seminar in Gothenburg. We started out early with Jenny Åkerman giving a free public speaking about how we can use the brain to achieve what we want. She is a Swedish Brain Scientist who gave a very entertaining speech about the brain. She goes briefly into what I talked about before. That the brain stores everything as stories. It can not tell apart fact from fiction. You know when you dream and all the crazy stuff seems so real. Even flying that I do from time to time feels so normal in your dreams. I also met a new good friend on the train up and recommended the book “The Storytelling Animal” by Jonathan Gotschall to him. This is one of the best books that I have listened to. It gives you great insight into how your storytelling organ inside your skull works. Jenny mentions how use simple bizarre story to remember everything on a shopping list.

The Brain stores everything as Stories – WE just need to help it by telling better stories

A story like this can’t be ordinary for the brain to remember it. The brain remembers all new stories it are exposed to. It’s what the brain are made for. It’s what the brain lives for.

Can you be Leonardo Da Vinci? [Seven steps on the road towards an awesome mind]

Can you be anything like Leonardo Da Vinci? Jenny Talks about the myths and truths of using both sides of the brain. We should use as many centers in the brain at the same time when doing everything. We may not be as genius as Leonard but here are 7 steps that will take you closer to becoming great. They can be found in my blog: How can you be a modern Ninja. and in the audio-stream from SXSW: Design Like Da Vinci: Leonardo’s Sketching Lessons.

7 Steps to Everyday Genius

1. Be curious. You should be constantly learning new stuff.
2. Test knowledge. Learn from your mistakes.
3. Improve your own experience. Make it multi-sensory.
4. Embrace ambiguity, paradox and uncertainty
5. Whole-brain thinking (science / art, logic / emotion)
6. Know the physical world (grace, dexterity, fitness)
7. Use system-thinking. See interconnections

Step out of your Comfort-Zone [That’s when Creativity and Courage happens]

Jenny spins it further by saying that:

“All new knowledge and progress is preceded by confusion” — Jenny Åkersson

It is when the brain is confused that it steps out of its comfort-zone and try solve things in a different way that it is used to. The Brain actually likes being confused. It feels good. Think about that the next time you feel confused. This is what Peter Sengie calls Creative Tension.
The gap between vision and the current reality is called the Creative Tension. This is the space on with the magic of creativity happen.

You must be willing to leave current reality. Step out of your comfort zone towards an unknown future. A future only visualized in a dream. You must expose your art to others. Thus becoming vulnerable. Only then does creativity and empathy happen. Both Brené Brown and Seth Godin explains this well 🙂

See my blog-post on empathy: The Way of Empathy [The Beast with 2 Hearts]

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

In all her 12 years of research Brené Brown can not find a single example of Courage, Spiritual courage, Moral courage or Leadership courage, when someone didn’t first step out of their comfort zone and became vulnerable.

Have the courage to do what is possible. Just not convenient.

Prime Your Brain [Tell your story to your brain]

Like Jason Silva says: “You can Prime Your Brain towards a goal you want to reach”. As your brain can’t separate fact from fiction: Everything that you or someone else tell your brain makes sense. Because the Brain even can’t tell the difference between someone else talking to it or you doing the talking yourself.

Your brain is a goal achieving machine. Your subconscious is hard at work on achieving your visions and dreams of the future. So start priming your own brain, by telling your brain what visions of the future it should have in mind.

Serendipity is just that. Filling your mind with patterns on your path. To be on the lookout for. And then your subconscious mind will be on constant watch for these patterns and make them happen. So here is what you can do:

1. Start by thinking about where you are a year from now.
2. Start backtracking ever step that you took to get there. Think about the big events on the way.
3. Now think about the first step you took a year ago.
4. Start Walking, Running, Jumping, Climbing and Flying to get there!

Look to the Moon

Look To The Moon – Run To The Hills

It’s Prime Time! [Look To The Moon & The Stars]

Who are  you a year from Now? Should we really ask questions like this? I think we must! We should not dwell on the past. But we should revisit it from time to time in order see the contrast to our present. Most of us should focus on the now. To keep things moving and operating. But some of us must make it our mission to study the past. And others must fantasize about the future and create stunning Science Fiction to inspire us all. We need all these skills.

The Past like the future does not really exist. They are both fantasies created in our minds. The Future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our minds in order to help shape the world we want to live in.
The Past unlike The Future has actually happened. The Past, as represented in our mind, is a mental simulation too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened. Most of us believe our memory is filled with reliable info we can access at will. Not so. But memory isn’t an outright fiction. It is merely a fictionalization of what took place. Memory is an unreliable self-serving historian. It’s there to help us make decisions that help us along for the bumpy ride that reality is.

Jonathan Gottschall from The Storytelling Animal

But even people who focus on the present benefits from priming their brain in some way. Because we need a larger goal for our modern society than Consumerism. Something to aspire to. And as we all need to be part of this vision, we all need some connectedness and some priming with the environment around us. We are not just the Animal who collects food or money on a daily basis. We are something more. And we can become so much more. We can put a Dent in the Universe!

We all need to look to the stars! Together! — Lord Sillion
