Storytelling Into The Future

Storytelling Into The Future

Welcome Traveler 4488 …

Can you use a narrative from Science Fiction to change our “real” Narrative?

As I watch the fantastic Travelers series on Netflix I jump up and down in my sofa thinking on my own mission – our mission. The mission to build a better world here on Planet Earth. Like in the “hypothetical” that I was sent here from another planet to make planet Earth the best place to live and visit in the entire Milky Way Galaxy.

travelers-netflix

It is a Narrative that has been in my mind at least since I was 15. And I have used it many times to get my bearing for my compass into the future and as a silly “What If?” Question.

The question I get in my mind so frequently is this:

Am I alone in thinking about my Narrative in this way?

Clearly, the makers of great Science Fiction and other awesome stories think a lot about the messages they bury into their stories. My whole life I have been going alone not having anybody to talk about how to use this for real. Even now in my newfound quest as a Change Maker in a big global network of change makers I have yet to find many people, who get’s as excited as I do when I watch stories and then immediately what to discuss the story behind the story. Surely there must be a whole network of writers to the many great Sci-Fi series like the Travelers, Continuum, Orphan Black, Black Sails, The OA, Battlestar Galactica and of course Star Trek and others that meet at events and talk about this, or is there?

Must I move there to talk about this? Can I host events here in Sweden about it?

What I’m referring to now is that I would love to put together and host a very special and cool launch and premier event for the world premiere of Ghost In then Shell movie. The old Ghost in the Shell (GitS) movie from 1995 and of course  The Matrix  movie that was directly inspired by it both changed my life in so many ways. I now want to bring this conversation into the open – How new movies and TV-series can change the life of so many more people.

Or is it me being too silly for my own good and just think, that this is way cooler than it is?

Then we have futurist like Jason Silva that just makes me think otherwise. He really get’s in a creative spin and mind rush when watching some really good storytelling.

Watch or listen to Jason Silva on Impact Theory about it.

The Myth Gap

the-myth-gap

And in his latest book, The Myth Gap and his talk on the RSA Alex Evans gives a very compelling insight into why storytelling is so important. He even quotes my favorite author Terry Pratchett on the subject:

People think that stories are shaped by people when actually it’s the other way around – Terry Pratchett

It’s about this time in history – our must crucial yet. This is the time where we set the story and “The Myth” about who we are as a species and what we want our future societies to become.

Who Are We?

Both Travelers and Ghost In The Shell ask really profound questions about who are as individuals and as a species and who we can be and where we are going.

Questions I have been pondering my whole life. Questions I want dig deeper into to find our quest. Questions I want to lift up to the surface to talk more often and vividly about. That’s what I do as Captian Future 🙂

Sillion Valley here I come!

As I now finally launches my company Sillion Valley I at least want to dig deeper into this what I can do as Lord Sillion – Capitan Future.

I will dedicate the whole of 2017 to see how I can apply “Ontological Design” in using stories and conversations about how we actively design the society and future we want. To be “A Force For Good“, like Dalai Lama and Daniel Goleman puts it in his latest book by the same name. To totally change the conversation this year.

What we focus on and what we talk about is what will happen. It’s how the brain works. And lately, the conversation has been about special events and special people who we don’t want.

Let’s instead focus on what we want. Start testing what we can do. To prototype it into existence. Build a global network of trust with Change Makers – Rebels – Guardians – Stewarts and Captains of Spaceship Earth.

Who is with me?

Who wants to create cool events around Sci-Fi and “What If?” Questions with me?

Are We The Passengers? Or The Crew?

Are We The Passengers? Or The Crew?

Watching Passengers I can see the parable to our story.
Are we the Passengers?
Or are we the Crew?

Just like my last text on The Revenant this is also about being slumbering awake or wide awake. My movie reviews is usually about what I take with me after watching a good story – The open and the hidden messages and parables.

Narration and Narrative

Much can be said for the movie’s story – the Narrative – and the Narration. I will go into deep thoughts of what spurred me and what I take with me as I narrate this to myself 🙂

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!

We humans have lived on earth for a long time. We do so in an ecosystem with gazillions of symbiotic creatures living both inside us and around us in “Nature”. It is only now in the last 100 years that we have new narrative to consider. That just like the passengers of Avalon we are traveling on a spaceship through space. Most of us are asleep in the sense that this is not included in our daily narration nor in our journeys, missions and quests in life.

The fact that a critical failure, in they way a planetary ecological system works, will be the end many species continued existence as we now it today. Life will go on. We on the other hand may or may not survive a big extinction event. An especially the way live and the system we have curated and given birth to over the last couple of thousand years. Namely our societies, cultures and our entire civilization.

We Live On A Ship

Some have been half awake to the fact that we human are now the biggest force in shaping the future for life on the spherical rock going around the sun. And smaller group have even be “awoken” to and are trying to internalize the narration that this is indeed a ship we live on – going through space. A Spaceship. And just like both the real life versions like ISS or the Apollo missions to the Moon and the numerous versions in fictional stories of Space Fantasy and Science Fiction, we need to treat it like a ship. A ship with functions like life-support and climate-control. We also have a whole crew of species “running” the ecosystem. There is also us Humans. Who have just stumbled half awake onto the bridge and accidentally started pressing a lot of buttons in what Otto Scharmer calls “Organized Irresponsibility“. Now wide awake we Captains of the Bridge has to come up with a way not to crash or self destruct our ship before the time runs out.

Sounds like any kind of movie you are familiar with?

Wake Up!

Well Passengers certainly got me thinking in these terms. It also raises some other interesting “What If?” questions. Like: What is right to do? In the beginning Jim is faced with the question if it is right to wake Aurora. Then later we all learn that he should awoken many more because they would have been doomed anyway. So what first seemed selfish and questionable later turned out to be essential to the brink of being fatal. Back to that soon.

So what is mine and your quest? Our quest?

Who shall we awake from the dream that everything is going to be okay? (or “Not” okay). In an awake state we can narrators of our own life. To make the change we want to see in the world.

Here we have heroes like Elon Musk, with his awakening projects and companies like Tesla and Space X, being a big role model how we can do this on a larger scale and still within the narration of the old capitalist system. We have Narrator and entertainer Leonardo DiCaprio awaken us with both factional stories like The Revenant and the documentary Before The Flood. Injecting us with inspiration to do more and be fully awake and alive in our surroundings.

It’s Skill Time!

What are your skills as crew-member? And what skills do you want to learn to be part of the journey on this ship?

I think we both need to specialize in deep-skills that it take years to master. In an ever evolving dance of lifelong learning and adapting.

And we need the type of Meta skill that Joshua Cooper Ramo calls the Seventh Sense. The ability to se and understand the networks world we live in and that are on the horizon of the future.

And for that we have all the tools and skills that Peter Senge and Otto Scharmer has bundled up as Theory U. The skills of Presencing, Crystalizing and Prototyping the future we want to emerge.

Evolving The Future

Going back to Jim and his decision only to awake Aurora could have been a much better decision to wake more people. Well he tried to wake the crew but failed in his defence. Still with the proper training of Presencing skills he could have sensed a future coming where he definitely would have needed a hole team to prevent the missions from failing and everyone from dying.

How do we create and evolve the networks, hubs, events and meetups? Where all this happens? How do we create positive Social Fields – Collective Behavior Patterns? So that we can take the collaborative steps in ensuring that this spaceship runs well and continues to evolves us and all living things into a prosperous flourishing future? This is where I see my role – and my need to learn – the skills needed – to nourish this Awakening. To become a Evolutionary Leader. And you can too by studying some of the:

[Seven Competencies of Evolutionary Leadership as Foundational Framework for Developing Designers of Alternative Economic Futures]

Does anything of what I have said so far intrigue you?
Does it resonate?
What are your thoughts?

It sure intrigues me. That is why call myself Captain Future. A silly way to talk about the need for a crew of Spaceship Earth. And it’s not a solo job. I need a core team of crew members and they need me. And we need many mote teams working in unison to solve our missions and quests.

Are you with me?

Celebrate The Future

Celebrate The Future

The Future does not really exist. Nor does The Past.

They are both fantasies created in our minds. The Future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our minds in order to help shape the world we want to live in.

The Past unlike The Future has actually happened. The Past, as represented in our mind, is a mental simulation too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened, with the brain and your imagination filling in most of the blanks based on your emotional connection to that past event.

We need the future. It’s a thought-experiment that triggers our curiosity. It’s a vision that will point us in the right direction on our path in life. It will trigger innovation. It will give us hope. It’s a land of more and better science. It’s warmer place where we care for each other. With out it we would never had gone to the moon or invented internet. It’s a place of magic and fantasies. And yet we long to make it real.

That is why we celebrate the future. We do it with Science Fiction and Time Travel Stories.

We need the things that aren’t real. Our brain runs on fiction. That’s why we should celebrate the good and vanquish the bad.

Lets celebrate the future!

If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything - Marty McFly - Back To The Future

If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything – Marty McFly – Back To The Future

Back To The Future Party!

We can celebrate the future in lots of different way. One of the ways that we can do this is to celebrate Back To The Future Day 21 October 2015. It is on this date that Marty McFly arrives in the future in Hill Valley. There already lots of parties planned for this that including the Marty McFly Welcome Party in the actual Hill Valley. Many cinemas the world over will celebrate this by showing 2 or 3 of the Back to future Movies on that night.

Back To The Future October 21, 2015

Back To The Future October 21, 2015

This is so Awesome! I would have thought that only a couple of us here in Sweden would have thought this was cool. Now literal every city in Sweden are having a Back To The Future viewing party. I’m so psyched about this!!!

There is even a short film coming called Doc Brown Saves the World!

Also other ways to enjoy storytelling about the future is to watch Tomorrowland the movie that is out now on Blue Ray and Apple TV. And right now we are in the middle of the epic 6 episode final season of my favourite series Continuum.

And Play games that takes place in alternative futures to as a thought experiment. Like Forbidden Stars set in the Warhammer 40K universe that I got yesterday to play this October.

And it doesn’t stop by watching our favorite stories together. Plan more and better Meetups, parties, events and conferences where we meet and discuss what future we want to create together.

And do it today! Because remember the future only exist in our minds and if we don’t do it now it will never be done.

I challenge you all to dare dream up a better future and then take part in creating it! — Lord Sillion

I see you in the Future! At a celebration 🙂

Transformium [The Blockbuster Myth]

Trans … Wait for it … form.
If we experiment with the thought, that we can play the present in either Slow-motion or in Fast-forward. We can then see the future being created at a comprehensible speed. To see Time, Transforming the world around us in various rates. If reality is a movie, then we understand that for every new frame to come, we set the stage in the current frame, for the transformation to take shape. I will now give you my thoughts on how a crappy movie has my mind spinning and why we need to make better more thoughtful movies. They are never ever just dumb entertainment. Especially not the big blockbuster action flicks that so many of us, pass of as pure brain-dead entertainment. This is the ones to look out for. They go right into our emotional core.

If you want to burrow a message into a human mind. Work it into a story — Jonathan Gottschall, The Storytelling Animal

Science Fiction Storytelling [The Blockbuster Myth]

Transformers … I know what you think. It’s the brain-dead action movie by Michael Bay with giant robots from outer space. Well I went to see it tonight. Because it has giant robots. And it’s a Sci-Fi movie where the future of humankind on Planet Earth is at stake. Was it a mistake? Or did I have free will in making the choose to see it? Find out below.

If you read my thoughts from last summer about what I think of blockbuster sci-fi action you know what I think of Transformers: Age of Extinction. To sum it for you here it is:

What we can Imagine –> We can Build

We must use Storytelling and Science Fiction to envision a new Future. And to raise important question for an ongoing dialog about the future and where we are going. We should draw parallels to our past and present to give us better picture of who we are and how we build our society. Why do we go forward? If we want to change the present into a better world tomorrow, then Epic Storytelling is the Ultimate tool to communicate a common vision of that future. Things we must invent and obstacles we must overcome. Everything is made up and we make up the future, together.

So what is Good Epic Blockbuster Movies to me? Here are some of my favourites: The Matrix, Avatar, Avengers, Cloud Atlas, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Transformers

Transformers – Age of Extinction

Transformium [Way Shap:ier Than Adamantium]

With that in mind. What did I think of Transformers? It’s a mess of illogical storytelling with very little insight why we should care about the future of the human race. The main characters are constantly concerned with each others wellbeing and maintaining silly Movie-American family values. All the while countless human lives are lost without a single though or comment.

And “The Age of Extinction“? What’s up with that? Yes the threat to humanity is very real, as in so many movies before this one. And yet most people doesn’t seem to get it. They do very little to act on it. If your going to die, doing anything else than prevent it from happening seems a little bit out of character. Well maybe it’s just really they way we treat Earth today in the real world. Nobody can grasp how bad we are treating it and we always think that someone else is doing something about it.

Can we use movies like this, to get us aware of the fact that we need to do something to save our “World” together?

Then there is the magical metal Transformium. Sci-Fi movies should stay away from trying to explain what is clearly magic, by trying to explain it as science. (I’m locking at you Midi-chlorians). Some things we humans can just accept as a magical setting for raising some interesting philosophical questions. It’s what Sci-Fi does best. Stop trying to explain things like the Metal Transformium by making it a metal that flies around as little cubes just to form a robot. If this was the case, they could just dissolve whenever they were hit or shot at. Just like the liquid Metal Demon in T2. If they where a calculating machine and where to use this power to the extent of their abilities, it wouldn’t be a match at all. Make better technical plots where it fills a purpose to the story and the core of the message. Otherwise leave it be. On a second note. The name Transformium is used as a joke in the movie and it is called this with full intent of irony.

Cade Yeager: [to Joshua] You’re an inventor like me, so I know you have a conscience. Don’t let your creation take control.
Joshua Joyce: I created Galvatron, I control him!
Cade Yeager: No, he’s been controlling you!

Then there is opening act with Mark Wahlberg as a broke Inventor, Maker och Tinkerer. Just like me, he has an unyielding belief that his breakthrough is just around the corner. I’m still waiting for mine as a Holistic Thinking Ninja. So this is the best part that actually resonates with me. And he is called Yeager which is an obvious flirt with the Jaeger Program in Pacific Rim which is much better movie 🙂

And what about the moral of the story?

There some few bright spots. Like when Joshua Joyce, the head of KSI, says that his intent for the company was never to be evil and he tries to make amends in the end. Otherwise there is nothing about what almost every movie now forgets to mention or portray. The transformation of our society into the Network Society. They always fail to show, how we can use the internet and social media for good. With Sustainability, Collaboration, Transparency and Community at the core of global problem solving. The hero isn’t alone anymore. They have a whole team available at the tip of their fingers through a smart phone. When will we see the first Blockbuster movie to fully portray what this new paradigm shift means for The World?

Do You Have a Teflon Brain?
[What Does Movies Teach You?]

Action movies are never just stupid entertainment where you turn your brain off. No can do. The brain doesn’t come with an off-switch and it are constantly affected by what it experience and the stories that it craves for so much. And everything has a message. If you can’t spot it, it’s just cleverly or unthoughtfully hidden from plain sight within the story. And the wrong message does actually affect us in the wrong way. I don’t give me any crap about that you are some kind of superhuman with a Teflon Brain. Like an On/Off switch that you can flip when you want to become invulnerable to the world around you. Your brain doesn’t work that way. Most of the cognitive work of your brain is hidden from the conscious you. The one part of your brain, that is actually a story told by your brain for you, to live through.

Engage with the stories around you on whole new conscious way and a new world will open up for you. If you want to know more check out Jonathan Gottschall’s book The Storytelling Animal.

“We are critical and skeptical. But when we are absorbed in a story, we drop our intellectual guard” — Jonathan Gottschall

Should we then stop going to see stupid movies by the kinds of Michael Bay? The world surly doesn’t think so. As Transformers are breaking all kinds of records just in its first week. What should we do then to stop this madness? Voting with our dollars sure doesn’t work. Reflecting in groups? Hope for the Wachowskis to save us? Give me your thoughts in the comments below.

How can we bust the “Blockbuster Myth”, that I would like to call it?

What Can You Transform? [The World of Tomorrow]

How can I use this movie to further my own thoughts? Well Transformium is actually a good name for us to use in another context. That we create our own tomorrow by transforming our present Space-time Continuum. We have this magic super power in our hands. Just yesterday I posted some questions about how we create Tomorrow that I call The World of Tomorrow.

World of Tomorrow

By telling stories of your own tomorrow you can actually change the way you act, think and behave today. Remember that Tomorrow is just a fantasy in your mind.

“The past, like the future, does not really exist. They are both fantasies created in our minds. The future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our heads in order to help shape the world we want to live in. The past, unlike the future, has actually happened. But the past, as represented in our minds, is a mental simulation, too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened, and many of the details – small and large – are unreliable. Memory isn’t outright fiction; it is merely a fictionalisation” — Jonathan Gottschall, The Storytelling Animal

Go forth and tell better stories of a Tomorrow that you want to live in!
