Elevate Your Mind

On what level do you experience the world?

Are you stuck in fixed mindset or are you growing yourself, your mind and the people around you? Get out of victim mode. Even the most “successful” people in the world have bad days. And they are working hard not be there for long and stay in the “Through Me” or “As Me” mode as much as the can. And so should you!

And do check out What my friend Tess writes about Peter Sage in Swedish. Both his levels of thinking about the world and experience the world.

I also recorded a new pod in English about Hacking Your Future.

Happy Hacking!
Happy Future!

Level Up Your Consciousness

In what mode do you view the world and everything that is happening? What is your attitude towards events and your level of control over them? A long time favorite of mine, Peter Sage, explains in such a great way in this 5 minute clip from the long talk with Peter Sage on London Real where he explains 4 the levels of awareness in which you interact with the world. And it’s well worth it to listen his whole talk on London Real.

Update June 2016: There is new clip with Peter Sage here abut it: Understanding Yourself: Four Levels of Consciousness

These levels are in some way correlated to Robert Kegan’s research on the five orders of consciousness. Where by training your brain in various ways creates a lot more connections between your synapses over the years and thereby reaching new levels of consciousness. Give him a listen on the RSA. Or read about his 5 levels here. The 4th level ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind and the 5th level ‘Self-Transforming’ Mind is in some way connected with Peter’s 3rd and 4th level. You can get there faster by the right stimuli but it is still going to take years and you are likely to get there by midlife.

Get to it, and start level up your own mind and help elevate your core group around you.

1 – To Me – Victim Mode

This is the Victim mode. Were the world happens to you. You are not in control of your own fate and your are constantly blaming others and world events for your demise. This is a very hard mode to get out of. It has very much to-do with the people that surround you. Oftentimes is it essential that you upgrade your peer group if you can. Other ways can be to get a mentor or a role-model to mimic. The hardest part is often to recognise that you can change. This is also called of having a fixed mindset. Or playing the blame game.

To get out you have to do what Derek Sivers says: Purge The Vampires! And upgrade your peer group.

You are standing beside the river are envious on those to seem to swim so easily in it.

2  – By Me – Go Get It Mode

This is when you have a Go get it attitude towards the world. You are trying to take full control of the reins of your life, bending everything around you to your will. You set goals and you go after them. You have given up blame and started coming more into a growth mindset. You take personal responsibility for your future.

To jump in the river and swim against the current.

Life happens by you. This will often result in clash of wills and conflict of interest. To level up from this mode you often need more wisdom and influence of kindness. It can be done by just starting to give more.

3 – Through Me – Flow Mode

You start seeing the world more like a flow state. Life happens through you. You are losing up your need for control. You start building your network by giving instead of taking. In some magical way, the more you give the more things are stating flow back to you. Life happens for you. You start have faith in those around you and you start building trust.

Here is also differs a little from Robert Kegan’s view as you can reach this level of understanding at a young age and still not had time to make all synapse connection in your brains that come with wisdom. Still you will reach his 4th level of the ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind much quicker, by being in this mindset.

You start getting the river to work for you. You use the current and the winds to take you not in a straight line but to unexpected places by being open to change and by being curious. You can more easily let go of the FOMO. You stop chasing goals and trust the direction, the journey and the dreams of your life.

You level up yourself and elevate everyone around you. The world is no longer a zero sum game. With the help of mindfulness to take your mind further. You take you core group with you on your journey.

4 – As Me – Oneness Mode

You become one with the universe, Literally. As everything in the universe affect everything else.

See yourself in everything else. A conscious unity with everything around you. Get into oneness with the universe.

Give up the illusion of separateness! – Peter Sage

This is of course not a state you can be in all the time. It’s a journey. Towards unconditional love. You enter this mode as often as you can through various activities like meditation and mindfulness. Here is where his model differs from Kegan’s model too. But the more connected your mind becomes when entering the ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind and the ‘Self-Transforming’ Mind mode the more easy it will become to enter As Me thinking.

There is also the other way into this way of experience the world, that can entered by switching on what Jonathan Hadit calls “The Hive-Switch” in the mind. You do this by doing things like experience Awe of nature. Some other ways to activate this mode in the brains is to take psilocybin or getting into trance dancing rave.

I’m a raver for life!

I think they are very related.

Hack The Future

You can’t solve a problem on the same level thinking that created the problem –  Albert Einstein

And that sums up they way to actually build a better future. We climb both the ladders above. Both Peter’s description on how we experience the world and Kegan’s thinking on how we grow our minds.

To change a behaviour you need a new emotional level of understanding. To shift your thinking from a goal to an identity. Working with identities is very powerful. Have identity shifts. Redefine your current identities and make up new ones.

The strongest force in human personality is the need to remain consistent with how you define yourself, your identity – Peter Sage & Tony Robinson

So set yourself for the win. Get the right peer groups and mentors that enforces the shift in identity and behaviour. If you can’t find a mentor do what I and many, many more people have done throughout history

– -> Read their books. And in recent years we also have access to fantastic mind-boggling podcasts and online lecture video talks like TED and Talks at Google and many more. This how I have spent the last 4 years leveling up my mind and thinking.

And put yourself in the right environment

If you are trying to eat less sugar. Don’t have sugar at home and don’t hang around people drinking soda. Don’t define yourself as a recovering sugar addict. Be a happy life-hacker and spend time with other health hackers.

If you want to start exercising more. Pack your back the night before and define yourself as a fitness person. Hang out with people training and join them for a group exercise.

Connection Intelligence

In the right environment we also connect our brain to other brains. That is how we elevate our brains, minds and thinking. We do it in a network. All standing on the giants who came before us. And now as change are speeding up we also build on the giants that are climbing with us side by side. Some call it the Hive-Mind.

Go find a mastermind group or a creative hub or cluster and spend time with the brains there!

Elevation

To elevate your life, spend time with other people elevating their lives and yours. And do return the favor in kind by elevating them back.

I also want mention Theory.U – Leading from an Emerging Future by Otto Scharmer and Peter Senge, like Tess does. It is three principal ways to approach the world. Through Open MindOpen Heart and Open Will.

Open Mind

Having an Open Mind means you have a curious approach to the world. Being curious and asking a lot of interesting and dumb question opens up for creativity. The opposite of judging.

Open Heart

This is opening up and being vulnerable. To practice your compassion towards others and try to understand what you and they are feeling. To have an Open Heart towards the world.

Open Will

To have the courage to do what is right. And not give in, into the fear of the tribe ostracizing you. Be brave and have an Open Will.

And find a tribe that encourages all this behavior.

Smarter Than Yesterday

Have you been curios and learning something new today? If you haven’t there is no need to give up hope. Turns out that curiosity is trainable. And even learning new skills doesn’t take years if you apply the right methods according to Tim Ferriss, who has been a human guinea pig in learning new skills in the shortest amount of time. You too can chose to get better every day. The best way to do this, is to spend time with others who also Level Up! each day 🙂

I call this being a Curiosity Ninja!

Ignore Everybody [Do Learn Form Them]

Today I got inline to get some Norway Lobsters at a local fish wagon. Same place I went to yesterday when I didn’t get any because I was there to late. So I did learn and became smarter than yesterday. Some people do. Others has worked for 20 years and only have 1 year of experience to account for, i.e. they has the same 1 year of experience 20 times. This I “Read” today as I listened through the audiobook Ignore Everybody with Hugh MacLeod. I really peculiar book that isn’t for everybody. It was for me. I really like the double messages that confirms that nothing is ever black or white. Check it out: Ignore everybody and 39 Keys To Creativity.

Many people have already made the mistakes that your are about to make. You don’t have to learn form your own mistakes. You can actually learn from others 🙂

Ignore Everybody - The Blog

Ignore Everybody – The Blog

Level Up! [Make Smarter Choices]

What I’m getting at is that becoming smarter each day by learning by your own and preferably others mistakes is a choice. I choose to do things differently today to see if they turned out any better. Different is of course not always better. But without experimentation we can’t innovate and improve ourselves.

Neo , The Chosen One – Are he making decisions or are he just to understand the choices already made?
– What Choices Do You Make?

I will go back to the word “Choice”. Am I really choosing to do things different? This is a very interesting question. So interesting that I had to re-watch my absolute favourite movie on the matter tonight: The Matrix Reloaded. Did I have choice in watching it tonight or am I just to understand why I watched it again? The question of free will and if the universe is deterministic is very interesting on a human level. Mostly because this is the only level, part from some really smart mathematicians, that most humans can think on. And it’s ok. We need to think like humans and we need to become better at it all the time.

Most of us humans don’t really think about becoming better humans on a daily basis.

But what if we did?

I now feel that this is one of the things I really care about. How can we become better versions of ourself than we where yesterday? How can you? Like in a roleplaying game like World Of Warcraft where one of the main focuses is getting more experience each day so the you can increase your skills and learn new talents every week, month and year. To Level Up! This is the book I’m writing. How to Level Up! your life. By training your brain, your body and your empathy and social skills every day.

Check Tai Lopez too and his take on investing and improving yourself every day: Invest in Yourself.

Double down on your own brain and invest in yourself — Tai Lopez

I have also been reading and doing exercises in Daniel Priestley’s books, Key Person of Influence and Entrepreneur Revolution. They are all about defining yourself and all of your experiences into a clear version of yourself. One that you want to take further into life. One that others will look up to in your particular tribe and niche.

Do give Daniel a listen on his long talk on London Real.

Within the context of an environment, certain outcomes become very normal - Daniel Priestley

Become part of an environment that normalizes what ever you want to succeed with – Daniel Priestley

Do want to get a brain that sees the world in a new perspective?

Both Robert Kegan and Peter Sage both talk about another effect of pursuing knowledge and insights each day. Our brain can reach new orders of mentality and consciousness where we perceive the ourself and the world in whole new ways. Read more here and here. So by training yourself you can actually become better at training yourself. This is very good news for you. Also people will wanna hang out with you if you are a wiser person.

Find Your Fellows [Start a Level Up! Club]

The central theme in all this is to spend time with other people who also want to Level Up! their lives. Not with people who drag you down but with people who lift you up. This is sometimes hard. There are global meetups like Live Your Legend Local and online communities like London Real Academy that tries to gather people into peer groups that boost each other on a regular basis. Or start your own Level Up! Club. Start befriending people you want to have in you Level Up! club.

As for the book I mention at the top: Ignore Everybody. With it I mean Ignore Everybody except for your Level Up! Club.

And Mentors [Who Are Your Mentors?]

Try to find mentors to include in the group of people who you spent the most time with. People who are already ding things toy want to do. Listen to Geoff Woods on the subject: The Mentee. And listen to Tai Lopez TED Talk. I know this isn’t easy. I have never had a mentor in my life. And the all the mentors I have today come in the form of Books and Podcast with interesting people. Still I would like to find some real mentors and become one as well.

Is the Future For Sale? [Do You Own Yours?]

When I went to Almedalen this summer, me and my friends stumbled upon an art gallery with the walls covered in calendars sheets. It was an Art Project called “Dagar Till Salu” [Days For Sale]. It’s a thought experiment created by Filippa Krusenstjerna, Hanna Stahle, Lene Willumsen and Maria Lilja. What happens if you can buy your own day in the future? Can you call Dibs on everything that day? What happens in your brain when you buy a day? Do you in fact create your own future? Sure you can have visions and set goals. But are you responsible for the outcome of the future? If so, what can you do to Architect your own future?

Dagar Till Salu [Days For Sale]

Dagar Till Salu [Days For Sale] – We are buying the future! – Daniel Stintzing – Michael Sillion – Jörgen Welter

Is the Future For Sale? [Or do you sell your future?]

Thought experiments like these give rise to some very interesting questions. Can you buy the future? Or even the Present? What would you do if you called all the shots and where King for a day? And what happens in Your Brain when you buy a day in the future?

For me this evokes 2 different thoughts in my head. Should I start with the most worrying question first? I think I do:

Thought No. 1
[How do you spend your action points?]

If you have Money, Power or Influence how do you use that to affect life on Planet Earth? Now and in the future to be?

Sure we all interact with each other creating connections while weaving the tapestry of the future. But what if you can do it in a literal sense? Like in so many of the modern designer boardgames where you have some kind of action selection mechanic. You spend your time and recourses to decide on what outcome you expect. Can we do it in real life to. Sure we have desires for the future and they all constantly clash and interact with other people’s agendas. But if you don’t set your own agenda, someone else will. And that leads us directly to my next thought…

Thought No.2
[Are you taking full responsibility for your own future?]

So many inspiring people I have listened to lately all say the same thing. How do you shape your own future? Can you try to little? Or can you try to much? There are 4 ways to go throughout life according to Peter Sage.

1. To Me. The World happens to me.
2. By Me. The World happens by me.
3. Through Me. The World happens through me.
4. As Me. The World happens as me.

To go down to the desired step nr 3 requires both age and wisdom. We can all get there, with the proper mindset and guidance. So if you aren’t on your way, we can all help you get there.

Do you want to own up the outcome of each day by letting go of firm grip of too much control? Just do the right things that aligns with your visions, affirmations and goals and you will get there. We can’t predict the future. We can try to take control. Or we can let go and trust our own master plan. A master plan is also best if it aligns with all the other members of your tribes in this modern Networked Society.

My Day October 12 - I bought this day. It's mine I tell you. Mine!

My Day October 12 – I bought this day. It’s mine I tell you. Mine!

My Day [I Set the Agenda for My Future]

So how did it go in Almedalen? Well I bought a day in the near future. October 12th. This is now my day when I set the agenda. And My agenda is to talk with you about how we all set our agendas. So I will use it as an inspiration day for setting agendas. A Kind of META  thinking 😉

The RSA’s new idea ‘The Power to Create’ argues that the potential now exists (but is not yet fulfilled) for every citizen to be the author of their own lives. A responsibility we have in pursuing the creative life is to resist the lure of already conversations with ourselves, with our friends and, perhaps most of all, with our competitors and opponents.

And My friend Jörgen Welter also bought a day. In fact he bought 3 days 3 years in a row. Namely November 2nd all three years.  Let’s see what happens on his day. Why should we then do this kind of experiment? Because the brain is amazing companion that we can talk to. The best way to talk to your brain is to tell it stuff 🙂

People don’t believe what you tell them.
They rarely believe what you show them.
They often believe what their friends tell them.
They always believe what they tell themselves.
Seth Godin

This is what is happening in my brain, when I think about owning a day in the future. It gives rise to a feeling of autonomy. A story I tell myself.

What Is Love? [Her the Movie]

Why does Movies affect us more than we know? They can enlighten the way we think about ourselves and our future. What many of us know about love and how we should live together we get from Movies and TV-Series. So finally we get a movie like Her, who takes responsibility in awaken our thoughts on the matter. What can it teach us about love and how we should live together in the future? Find out below as my mind wanders on the subject 🙂

Do You Feel Alone? [Is More Love and Companionship the Answer?]

Her the Movie

Her the Movie – The heart is not like a box that gets filled up – It expands in size the more you love

We humans are social creatures by nature. It’s what makes us human. We are made for living together sharing food and stories with each others . Modern brain science shows that it’s hardwired into our brains. It’s makes us feel good when we help others. Most of us don’t like being alone and yet our modern world seems designed in many ways to keep us apart. Especially the notion that we should live only with our significant other and maybe some children. Or just alone by ourselves, like how many people do in our big modern cities. And yet, we are designed to live in a small or a large Tribe in so many ways.

Some of us has made it work, to live together with others. Many of rest of us feel very alone in our lives and in our decisions. This become very apparent during Christmas. The guilt and the loneliness we try to smother by consuming ever more stuff. Many of us tries to drown our Social Pain in Alcohol or Drugs. The Mental Care institutes are ever so crowded around the holidays, filled with human tragedy. And it’s going in the wrong direction. We now know that Social Pain is as real to the brain as physical pain. The old myth that we can just shake it of, is no longer valid and truly busted. Thanks to modern science and MRI scans we now know that large parts of our brain are wired to keep us in the social game. So what is the opposite of Social Pain and being alone? Is it Love and Companionship? What can we do to get better at this Social Game?

What do you think?

Decisions, Decisions [Why are we so bad at them?]

Human are also especially bad at making crucial decisions alone. We all need help. The Brain is very prone to make irrational emotional decisions and make up a logical rational explanation long after the decision is made. Sometimes we only have an explanation when we get asked about why we did what we did. We also hold things sacred. And around things we hold sacred, we are especially bad at making informed decisions. Here we all need help. Preferable from people who don’t think alike to avoid group thinking. This is also a reason why we should spend more time together. So that we can be there for each other.

So ask for help the next time you are making a tough decision.

Her2

Are you Her? [The past is just a story we tell ourselves]

The movie HER by Spike Jonze is a very fascinating story about love and loneliness. The setting is near future where living together or alone is just as complex or even more so than today. Check out some of the background to the movie here: Spike Jonze Imagines the Future of Intelligence, Mobile Design, Love and Pants in “HER” and The Past is Just a Story We Tell Ourselves. There are many questions that pop into my head during this move. And non get any real answer. They are just for us the Audience to ponder on. The questions I ponder on are:

1. Are we okay with living on our own? [Does just intellectual companionship suffice?]

Yes. We probably are. Intellectual stimuli are something most of us get to little of. It’s something many of us crave more of. Even though some parts of the brain is lazy, other parts can’t resist excitement if feels when getting a proper intellectual dialog going.

Her

No. She is a fictional construct, whereas I am a virtual entity. But we can still be friends.

Theodore in Her thinks he has found a perfect relationship with the AI called Samantha in the beginning. It’s just a little awkward when he should tell others about it, that might not understand. It’s like Raj in the episode The Beta Test Initiation of Big Bang Theory season 5. Raj has extreme trouble talking to women. So he finds true excitement when he gets an iPhone 5 with Siri and starts a relationship with her. So long as he is alone with Siri it’s fine but it becomes social awkward when they should socialize with other people.

Theodore on the other hand finds out everyone else is doing it too, having a virtual relationship with their AI. I think it could be an interesting companionship for everyone. Especially with those who has trouble forming real world relationships. But her lies also the real danger. Maybe now they have no reason at all to meet real people. With the right mindset it can probably be give us better social skills. And we all need that. Can it be Empathy training for those who need it the most? Yes, as long as it doesn’t replaces all other real world relationships. We need those too. It doesn’t replace them. It just complements them, I think.

We need the physical touch too, that generates oxytocin in our bodies. The brain is to hardwired for interaction with other humans or even other mammals for us to ignore the positive effects of living together. Sharing life and touching each other. So could we live in mental companionship with AI or a true online relationship while getting other social stimuli from other real persons? Like a mix? Probably, but it would be very hard balancing act to conduct. So is it worth giving a try? If we do nothing to conduct our future, we will probably get there soon. Should we?

2. How should we then design tomorrows cities and societies? [Are we ready for the cramming?]

Her The Movie - Designing our future cities for a better social life

Her The Movie – Designing our future cities for a better social life

We just love living in social tribes. That why so many of us move to, or live in cities. We are just not very good at designing these lives, in the city. Up until know most of our living has been without any design thinking. Many of us end up alone in the cities. The “Free Market” takes non of this into consideration when cramming us so close together, yet so separated by walls. And it’s not sustainable either. With every one of us having so many recourses by ourselves, without sharing them.

Let’s design our future cities so that they enables a better social life with more love & empathy and give room for a health life — Michael Sillion

And it’s now a theory, that even the very first cities from ten thousand years ago where only able to survive and flourish, thanks to the invention of beer. With so many people living together without a plan or oversight we are just hellbent on getting in each other’s faces. Alcohol solved some part of that problem by making us more social and tolerant of each other.

Now we know better what makes us tic and what makes us sting each other. It’s a very interesting and social science will continue to evolve us into insights, about how we should live together. With so many of us bunching up, shouldn’t we use our new knowledge to design better ways of living together? I defiantly think we should. We can’t leave it just to chance and the economic forces of a market economy. The life and the future is not about profit. We need to take charge, like some cities all over the world has already done.

Maybe all we need is our little cave where we can be alone for a while. But we also need new and better campfires where we can huddle up, share a meal and a conversation. Watch the stars and the moon. Engulf in fantasies about the past and the future together, using our favorite storytelling. And in all the excitement we can play great games and sports together. Sharpening both mind and body. We should even engulf in spiritual and energetic dance together. Thus turning on the Hive-Switch in our minds, binding us ever closer together.

3. What is Love? [Baby don’t hurt me, Baby don’t hurt me, No more]

Peter Sage on Love – Being someones significant other.

Yes, what is love? Peter Sage gives a great definition on London Real

Love is being someones significant other — Peter Sage

The definition of significant being: Separate from. Different too. Unique.
So total focused unconditional presence is what you should have in mind. Not two half circles that complete each other. It is two whole circles that are attracted to each other. Before you can truly love someone else, you must first find and complete yourself. And it’s also a paradox. As no one is never complete. The journey never ends. So is true love impossible or just slightly improbable? I think it’s something you should always strive towards and never reach.

Don’t be a boat that tries to carry someone. Be a lighthouse and harbour to light their path and provide comfort and understanding.

What we can do to make any relationship better is to make it Active Constructive. When someone close to you give you good news you can choose to respond in enthusiastic positive way. You also should try to keep a positive Losada Ration. More than not you should have positive conversations with your partner.

4. What can we do to change all this? [Let’s get social]

We are now entering a new era of a Social Society. We are just seeing the seeds of this thanks to the Internet and Social Media. This new Society will not come automatically. We need to help creating it, for it to become true. I can easily go in the wrong direction or go away entirely if we are not careful. Indeed some parts of society already are. It’s very interesting to listen to the thoughts of Matthew Liberman, Dov Siedman, Brené Brown and Daniel Goleman all from the RSA podcast. They all have different things to say about Era of Social and Empathy. And yet you can connect the dots between them. It all combines well with what Peter Sage says above about moving into a creative entrepreneurial future together. Go ahead and give one of them a listen 🙂

Her the Movie - Let's hack the Future

Her the Movie – Let’s hack the Future

Hack the Source Code [Create the Future]

We can’t just redo our lives over and over again until we get it right like in movies like Goundhog Day and Source Code. We have to make up for our mistakes along their way. But if we are smart about or actions and learn quickly from our own and others mistakes, we can Hack Life to the better. Listen to what other wise people have to say and hack out our own path through the wilderness. Bring along their tools, and use them in your own way.

So don’t hasten to judge someone else. Try to listen to them and understand them instead.

The best quote from Her the Movie is:

The past is just a Story we tell ourselves — Samantha

Don’t dwell and focus on the past. No good will come from it. Forgive and move on. Because: The Future is also a Story we tell ourselves. It shapes the Path we set out to travel on. Surround yourself with people who are on the same journey and you will be much more likely to get there. We create our own future. If we want more Love in this world we just have to Hack it in a smart way to get it.

Lets hack life for more Love & Empathy!
