7 Questions About The Last 20 Years

Visions of the Future [Part 1 of 3]

Why is visions so important? In this series of 3 I will talk to you about why I think so. The first 2 will go into personal visions answering these 2 questions: Who are you 20 years from now? & Where are you a year from now? In part 3 I will go into depth about creating shared visions for the future of our tribes, companies and societies. This is Part 1 of 3 about Visions of The Future.

Visit Earth 20 Years from now [What Stories should Intergalactic Tourists tell?]

Think of a future where we have some intergalactic tourists visiting Earth. They are living in your collective tribe using Milky Way BnB [#MilkyWayBnB]. Here are 7 questions you can ask yourself about what you are going to tell them:

  1. What would you like them to see and visit?
  2. What stories will you tell them about Earth?
  3. How did you pull it together and help build up the flourishing society that you live in today?
  4. On what projects did you pull weight during the last 20 years?
  5. What was the first big tipping-point that lead to the radical transformation of how we live together today?
  6. What mattered most?
  7. Who did you do it with?
Alien Tourist

What will you tell this Alien Tourist 20 years from now?

These are hypothetical stories that we can play around with. This is what Sci-Fi is really about. Not some crap action movie where society looks and feels exactly the same as today with a few tweaks. We need to use our imagination to provoke some new radical thinking. It’s only then that things will start to happen and new emerging systems will appear.

I want to create a space. Where you can  have these kind of discussions. And I want to combine it with a #MakerSpace. What I call a Future-Space or a Future-Dojo. We can both experiment with sustainability and discuss how we can live sustainable together. A Place to hang around with lots of different kinds of people who do not think alike. Not just the new hot MakerSpaces. Whoever awesome as they seem. I get the feeling that they are very polarized as well. Prove me wrong.

And in 20 years time I’ll be running a whole network of Future-Dojos as a Future Captain and a Creativity Ambassador.

There is nothing better for Self-Growth than somebody challenging your own viewpoint — Richard Gerver

Paint Lots of Pictures [Prime You Brain]

What will the future look like? The only way to find out, is to paint lots of pictures. Pictures of a future imagined. Take the ones we like the most, and make them into visions, to have before us as we travel, on our path ahead. Together we can Prime our brains in this way, to go into an emerging future. WE make our future happen. Not someone else. This is our time. Not Kings and Emperors of The Olden World. The new networked society is finally here.

It’s time to Level Up!

No fate! But what we make 🙂

The Kamiwaza Way [I Want to be a Godlike Ninja Futurist]

We are Godlike says Seth Godin. What Godlike Powers will I use in my future? What skills have I? What do have to learn, fail with and finally Master? Will I become Master – Sensei – Ninja?

[008]
Master – Sensei – Ninja [Who Am I?]

This is part 4 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

I have spent the last year Respeccing my Talents. Just like you do in World of WarCarft. I have always figured that I was some form of visionary and philosopher. So I decided to respec my skills. It has been a very interesting journey so far. I have challenging myself to learn something new every day. From the beginning I didn’t know what to become or who I wanted to be. But the more I learned and blogged about, I was starting to connect the dots. My vision for the future was becoming clearer. So when I finally heard the 2 podcast episodes from London Real with the 2 Futurists Jason Silva and Melissa Sterry, I finally struck home. I too want to be some kind of Futurist. So when I went to embroider a T-Shirt to wear in Almedalen I had to come up with a title to call myself. Then Holistic Thinking Ninja just popped into my head. So what is that? Bear with me and find out below.

“If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” — Wiseman, Sucker Punch

So I will now draw a full circle on these 3 words: Master – Sensei – Ninja. They fit into my reasoning in the story below about Wolverine, Wisdom from League of Legends and becoming Godlike [Kamiwaza] that Seth Godin speaks of. Read on.

The Wolverine [SNKT]

How many of you are fans of the Comic Superhero Wolverine? And if you are, have you ever been standing in front of the mirror going SNKT while extending your hands? Yes? I have. I still do it from time to time 😉

So obviously I have been to the Movies watching The Wolverine. It’s not a great movie but it’s the best Wolverine movie we have to date and Hugh Jackman is just born to play Logan. Although he is not exactly as in the comic you can’t help falling in love with him. He’s the classic unwilling hero. Because he must. To bad the Ninjas don’t put up a fight. This could have been as cool as the comic it is based on from 1982 by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. Ninjas should be cooler than that.

Ninjas are Awesome!

So what could be done better with this movie? Check out ComicBookGirl19: 10 Things about The Wolverine! Like she says in nr. 10. What is the Moral of the Story? Yes. The Moral of this story as well as in all the other big movies summer is completely missing. Let’s Make Better Art!

Wolverine and Ninjas of the Hand

Wolverine and Ninjas of the Hand

The Ninja, The Samurai and The Beast [Learning and Mastery]

Wolverine is full of Ninjas, Samurais and one Beast. Although they are Japanese, they all have 3 Chinese inspired counterpart heroes in League Of Legends. The 3 matching champions that I try to master are Lee Sin, Master Yi and Wukong. They all come with their own wisdom to share on mastery.

“Master yourself, master the enemy.” — Lee Sin, Play

“A True Master is an Eternal Student” — Master Yi, Play

“Every Mistake is a Lesson – Adapt to all situations – Bring me a real challenge” — Wukong, Master Yi’s apprentice, Play

Master Yi

Master Yi – A True Master is an Eternal Student

Well maybe Wukong isn’t a beast. But he has a close place in my heart. He is based on the old Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King who I was very fascinated with as a child. Because as it was one of the few animated films I saw that wasn’t Disney and it was full with wonder, magic and fighting. And awesome Chinese music. It still resonates within me today. It was one piece of Storytelling that captured my imagination. Who made me think that there is different kind of magic in the world if you let it.

Sun Wukong – The Monkey King

Be Brave and Be Bold [Fly out on a Kamiwaza path]

The bravery of the Monkey King as he stands up against and challenge the gods draws some parallels the latest book by Seth Godin that I am “reading” [Listening] to right now: “The Icarus Deception“. In it he talks about the new connected networked society. And why we must become Artists. Art is what happens in the connection between people. There must be a receiver for there to be art.

Art is also when we do something that is our own. When we do something that is not safe and outside our safety zone. As Brené Brown so elegantly put it, when we become Vulnerable. It’s then the Magic happens. Creativity only happens when we are willing to put ourselves at the line. Don’t copy or follow others on their safe trodden path. What is the worst that can happen? Be willing to risk a little and carve out your own path. That is why we must also be bold. Don’t fly to low to the sea. Fly high! As we are in no way in any danger of coming to close to the sun as Icarus did.

As Wukong challenges the gods, he also displays Godlike skills and powers. We must also strive to be Godlike:

Myths are ancient truths about what we are capable of. Our gods are oh so human. The deities we create are allot like us at our best — Seth Godin

Superman. Thor. Moses. Athena. George Gershwin. Thomas Edison — they each represent part of what it is to be human; they are inside all of us. We know we are capable of this — to be that strong or that cool or that generous. To persevere and connect and contribute the way our gods can — that’s why we invented them, why we revere them, and why they resonate with us. We have them inside, every day.

And yet we have no perfect word for expressing godlike abilities. We don’t know how to talk about what it is to perform in a mythological way, to strip away the artifice and let the deity express itself.

And the Icarus Deception pushes us to avoid even thinking of it. it strikes deep into our psyche with a vivid warning about the dangers of hubris.

Too late.

We’ve built a world where the only option is hubris, where the future belongs to anyone willing to act like the gods of our myths. Better coin a word for it.

The Japanese call it kamiwaza.

If the gods are us, then do we dare be as the gods are?

The Japanese term kamiwaza, like most great words for which we have no equivalent, is difficult to translate. The shortest version is “godlike.”

So when we strip away self-doubt and artifice, when we embrace initiative and art, we are left with kamiwaza. The purity of doing it properly but without self-consciousness. The runner who competes with kamiwaza is running with purity, running properly, running as the gods would run.

How dare we? How dare we presume to ignore Daedalus, to fly close to the sun, to apparently forego humility in a quest for something unattainable?

How can we not dare?

Hubris makes us godlike, and being godlike makes us human.Seth Godin

We are the New Gods Now [So we might just get good at it]

Godlike or Kamiwaza is also a term used in League of Legends and DotA the original MOBA game. It’s a reward shouted out by the game when you have scored multiple kills in a row without being killed yourself. The reward is originated shouted out in the first Unreal Tournament game.

“We are aspiring amateur gods now” — Kevin Kelly

It’s like Jason Silva says in his London Real interview. We are the New Gods Now. We are the frontal lobes of the Universe. We are the Universe being aware of it self. And we are just at the beginning of our long journey through the Universe. So we might just become the Guardians of our own small blue and green spaceship travelling through our galaxy. So it’s not heresy to have hubris anymore. It is what we must do. But we must do it together with lots of Empathy like I discuss in my blog: The Way of Empathy [The Beast With 2 Hearts].

Seth Godin speaks like many others of this new Connected Economy. It’s good start on our path to walk on. All of us is smarter than any of us. We just need to guide each others so that we don’t walk into darkness and we need to challenge each others to do better. To do better Art!

Master - Sensei - Ninja

Michael Sillion — Master – Sensei – Ninja

My Hubris [Master – Sensei – Ninja]

I too must be Kamiwaza or Godlike in life. Here is what I will focus on. From Michael SillioN I took M-S-N and made it too Master – Sensei – Ninja.

“The only thing standing in your way is you
When you get into flow-state you dim the self critic in the brain” — Jason Silva

Master [A True Master is an Eternal Student]

You must master yourself. Master yourself and you master the challenge. A True Master is never fully learned. This is what Socrates said long ago and what John Lloyd says in his inspiring talk on the RSA: General Ignorance: It’s all about what you don’t know.

Admitting you know nothing is the only way to recognize you still have much to learn — John Lloyd

I will do my best to learn something new every day. To Challenge Myself and my Brain every day.

Sensei [Every Mistake is a Lesson]

I want to spread my findings to others. To share my thoughts on the future. We must learn from our mistakes and share the lessons. As we learn to embrace our vulnerability we are able to share our mistakes and iterate faster to successful innovation. This is a very hard thing to for us humans to do. But as Brené BrownSeth Godin and Neil Gaiman puts it: It is both necessary and the only way the we can put forth our creativity and do True Art.

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls” — Joseph Campbell

Ninja [Taking the Holistic Approach]

Ninjas is small team that can take on any challenge using cooperation and smart approach. Check out my blog: How to be a modern Ninja and the audio from SXSW: Ninja innovation.

Taking the Holistic approach and sneak in my thoughts everywhere. I don’t want to stand still. I want to go boldly into the future with Collaboration, Sustainability, Transparency and Community in mind. To be a Holistic Thinking Ninja 🙂

My Futurist Path [Holistic Thinking Ninja]

As a Futurist and Holistic Thinking Ninja I want to do at least 4 things:

1. Future-Dojo or Social Dojo
I want to create a Future-centre or a Future-Dojo. What I call a Creative Social Dojo. Preferable my first here in Varberg, Sweden, where I live with my children and then spread the concept out into the world. A place where all ages can come and experiment with creativity and tech stuff. It’s a meeting place for creative people. Here we would all train in becoming better versions of our self. What I call Creative Ninjas. Who train their muscles every. The cognitive creative one, their social empath one and the actual body we all live in.

I’m thinking of it as having 4 functions.

Modern School, MakerSpace and Dojo

Incubator and Idea Cavern ThinkTank

Co-Working place

Social Meeting Ground and Awesome Play Ground

People can build things in Minecraft together and then 3D print them. A place where we can watch inspiring talks from TED and all other events. And discuss them together. And watch Sci-Fi Storytelling together and then talk about what is possible and not. I talk more about my thoughts on Sci-Fi Storytelling in this Blog series: Summertime Storytelling

We could do exercises in Empathy to discuss the importance of Cooperation and Collaboration in the a future where food, water and recourses will be scars. A place where we create the future together. Every School should come visit as often as they could to experiment and talk about the future. A Future Temple where both Ninjas and Pirates are welcome 😉

2. Future Meet – Unconference [How should we create a sustainable society?]
I want to have a Future meet event. Like the best part of Almedalen where people come together in an Unconference type of way to discuss how we should Architect the Future together. Taking the Holistic Approach about how should we create a sustainable society together? Either as a standalone event and/or as recurring event on the Future-centre.

3. Futurist Visionary [Speaker and Teacher]
I want visit others as a Futurist. I want to share my thoughts on the Future. As an inspirational teacher [Sensei] and Public Speaker who teaches others how to inspire themselves. I want to meet kids in school and inspire them. Every school and workplace should have Futurist who comes to visit and inspire them for the Future. Who help them create Visions for their own.

4. Future and Science-Hacks
I want help create and organise Science Hacks, Future Hacks and Hackatons like Science Hack Day for aspiring designers, developers, scientists and other geeks. Just about anyone interested in designing the future together are welcome.

Update
My Ninja Clan [Superhero Ninja Party]

In honor of me hitting level 40, I had Superhero Ninja Party this summer. We played “Superhero KUBB” where everyone got a special ability to use during the game. We should do this in more sports and games. As it is really empowering. Everyone also got the chance to dress up as hero, ninja or pirate of some kind. Then we designed our own personal special skills for the Future 🙂

I love this type of Party. So I will continue to develop the concept for the Future. Me and my Ninja Clan – My Extended Family.

Elysium [What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

This is part 3 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

Also check out my Storytelling post on Cloud Atlas, Iron Man 3, Oblivion and Princess of Mars.

[007]
The Elysium Future [What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

We must use Storytelling and Science Fiction to envision a new Future. And to raise important question for an ongoing dialog about the future and where we are going. We should draw parallels to our past and present to give us better picture of who we are and how we build our society. Why do we go forward?

The Elysium Future

The Elysium Future

So it was time for my 4th movie trip of the summer. Previous trips that I have discussed are Man of Steel, Pacific Rim and The Wolverine. Now it was time for the one story that would savior them all. Elysium was going to be epic judging from the imagery and visions I’ve seen. Maybe a next Matrix? Nah.

It’s a basic action story with to many logic loopholes. It’s set in a dystopic future that tries to provoke with cheap points about hell on Earth and heaven in space for the rich and powerful. On earth we have high-tech robot making facility made with human workforce in the worst Tayloristic way. Where threats of sacking is used to motivate people to do their best quality job. Not riming well with Johan Lange’s LUCKc-conept and Daniel Pink’s findings what motivates people. Elysium is also defended by a one man crazy mercenary back on Earth? Not Plausible.

Social Media is always missing from today’s Sci-Fi movies [Why is that?]

And where is the Internet and Social Media? By now everyone should have Google Lenses built into their eyes at birth with access to everyone of earth. Or at least the old and the powerful that had their inserted before the catastrophes.

“Many believe the brain separates fiction from reality. In “reality” the brains stores everything as stories. Humans are creatures of Neverland. We live in Neverland because we can’t not live in Neverland.” — Jonathan Gotschall

Yet again a disappointment. Now I am mad. A book writer would never get away with it. As I’ve said before in my post on Pacific Rim. It’s now time to use the power of Storytelling for what it is. “Profound lessons that you should internalize“. The brains already scans the story for what message to learn. If there is none or a bad one the brain still learns it. It’s time to step up that game if we are to move into the future with a Vision Worthy of the Human Race. Movie makers should listen to what Seth Godin and Neil Gaiman says. Make Good Art. When your art fails. Make Better Art. Don’t just copy old formulas. Or try to make lesser art by picking parts from other movies. Take the best parts and make something new and better. Be Bold. Make Better Art

Elysium should be about a dystopian future. But one where the Mega corporations and the Banks have taken control of Earth. They are run by some rich power-hungry Families that has taken over all power on earth, including the Military. In order for that to work they must have taken total control over the internet and Social Media. A complete Surveillance Society where you can get to anyone that as much as lifts a finger against the authority. Rebels can only make a resistance in rogue secret networks using the network against itself with supreme hacker skills. On Earth we have a complete chaos on an environmental disastrous planet where focus for the masses consists in finding clean water and food for the day. The Powerful remains in power with the help of the Robot Armies of the Mega Corporations with drones everywhere as human soldiers couldn’t be trusted. — Now that is better plot in the right direction. Maybe I should help Hollywood out?

Neil Gaiman - Make Better Art!

Neil Gaiman – Make Better Art!

We have a responsibility to tell better stories! Business as usual won’t cut it on Earth anymore. When making this huge Sci-Fi Storytelling Projects we have a responsibility to put together a large team of Futurist that can try to imagine and show us what one or another future might look like depending on what path we trod down. Make Better Art! Make Better Stories!

Stories I love [Continuum, Dollhouse and Hemlock Grove]

“I can’t change the past but I’m here hoping to change the future” — Jim Martin, Continuum

Well the summer wasn’t a complete dry on good Storytelling. I got to see 3 great TV-Series. First was the second season of Continuum. It really makes me think about what future we want to create and that Mankind can do it together. The season finale is just Epic for a true mind.

“Change the Architecture of the Future Change the Architect of the Future” — Jason, Continuum

Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse also really grew on me as I was watching season 1 on Netflix. The final episode “Epitaph” was also Epic Storytelling.

Why what’s your fantasy? Oh. I’m okay right here in the real world, thanks. No, no, you have a fantasy, okay? We all do. We need it to survive. — Doll House

Both are just the way a “Real” Sci-Fi show should be. Just on the border of being to complex. It should have you sitting on the edge of the sofa or even standing up, mind racing and heart beating faster. Challenging us to keep up all the time 🙂 And finally we have Hemlock Grove also on Netflix. A very nice story about Werewolfs and other magic set in a small town in Pennsylvania in the spirit of Twin Peaks and Vampire Diaries. With a huge secret plot that is revealed a little piece at the time.

Ouroboros & Yin Yang

Ouroboros & Yin Yang

In both Hemlock Grove and Continuum is also the mention of Ouroboros. I saw the episodes on the same night and it freaked me out 🙂

The Future [Almedalen FTW]

[006]
This is what the future looks like [Almedalen shows the way]

What can we expect from the future? What will it bring us? These are both valid questions. But they are both wrong. The right questions to ask is: What can the future expect from us? What will we bring into the future?

The first week in July has been one of the best weeks in my life. I have been visiting The Island Gotland. Some 3 hours by ferry from the east coast of Sweden in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The main city is called Visby and it’s a beautiful city from the Middle ages with preserved lime stone city-walls. It has some of the best summer weather in Sweden with lots of sun. It’s also the location of one of the most remarkable events in the word. During the first week of July each year over 20,000 people travel here to a place called Almedalen, to meet and discuss the future together. It’s an extraordinary mix of Scientists, Politicians, Environmentalists, Teachers, Schools, Entrepreneurs, Companies, Social Media Experts, Journalists, Bloggers and Health People… Well just about anyone interested in taking part in this large mingle party. All events and seminars are open to all and free of charge. It’s what modern democracy is all about. The new Networked Society in its infancy.

Cross-Fertilization and Teamwork is key for the Future — Lord Sillion

Visby Ruin

Visby is full of beautiful Ruins

What did I take away from this extraordinary week?

That there are 3 ways to look upon the future.

1. We can watch it happen. We can just sit down in our sofas and watch passively as the future unfolds before our eyes. Like watch TV and not taking part in the Stories told. Even in Almedalen I think some people are doing just that. Listening to what the experts are saying and nodding along.

2. We can make it happen. Given the ability to see and shape the path before us we will take part in doing so. The feeling of autonomy is present here and makes our life seem more meaningful. I believe them many people are in Almedalen for just this reason.

3. We can shape the future. Like I put on one of my T-Shirts I had made for Almedalen: Lord Sillion – Architect of the Future. We can be this Architects. To give fate a helping hand to shape our shared Destiny.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself” — George Bernard Shaw

Futurist [Holistic Thinking Ninja]

I’ve also come to realization that I want to be / am a Futurist. As all I ever do all day long is think about the future. I have recently seen and heard both the Futurists, Jason Silva and Melissa Sterry, on the podcast London Real. They did really convinced me of what I am and what I want to do. The helped me put word on what I am. A Futurist.

And all Futurist are different and all have a different approach. My approach is that I am a Holistic Thinking Ninja. I will explain it here in this Blog from the Future: The Kamiwaza Way [I Want to be a Godlike Ninja Futurist]]. I think the Futurist has always been inside me. But I realised it for real when I first started using internet in 1993 and when I first saw Ghost In The Shell. Read about it: My Fisty social Media Experience.

School Futurists [Every School should have a Futurist]

I was on a seminar in Almedalen about the school “Fryshuset” [Ice House]. They have something called “Klassmorfar” [Class Grandpa]. It’s a person in school who is there as an extra adult. To provide social comfort and bridge the gap to society. Someone all children and students can talk to about everything in life. The it dawned on me. Every school also needs a futurist. A person who can be there help the children envisions a better tomorrow that we can build together. To inspire them to take part in shaping their own future. To engage in discussion about what the future might look like. To make the dream big and dream bold about the future.

I filmed most of the seminar on Bambuser here:  #Fryshuset.

The School Spring event

#afkAlmedalen – The School Spring event

#afkAlmedalen: The School Spring [Why School?]

The people I went to Almedalen with are all tied together with a project called “Skolvåren” [The School Spring]. We are here to start asking the question: Why? Like Simon Sinek says. Why School?

Skolvåren started as a conversation on Twitter using the Hashtag #Skolvåren just 5 months prior to Almedalen. Just before Almedalen we had our first real Meetup in Varberg called #afkVarberg. The Meetup was a fantastic event with so many new contacts and new ideas for the Future of School. There I also gave a Pecha Kucha type of Speech in Swedish on why I think Games, Play and Storytelling is essential in all learning processes.

Johan Ronnestam held a great speech on that I filmed about The Future of School in 2 parts. Part 1, Part 2. You can find the rest on Skolvåren’s Bambuser page .

So naturally we called our event in Almedalen for #afkAlmedalen. I filmed part 2 on Bambuser about what #Skolvåren is.

We also wanted to change the format that many other events has. Instead of having a lecture or a panel of “experts” we had  chairs in rings with no tables so that we could have small open group dialogs.

Also City of Malmö and Malmö University had an event about: The school’s responsibility for a sustainable society – an example of the opportunities and challenges. See it in Swedish here:  Skolans ansvar för ett hållbart samhälle.

What is Culture for?

Pier Luigi Sacco visited Almedalen for one of the few seminars in English talking about What Culture Is For. See the Video here:
What is culture for? The interaction between culture and commerce for regional development.

Culture has started to drive the innovation in the society. This is what what many more like Seth Godin and Brené Brown are talking about too as I have mentioned in my blog.

We Make Future [What do we want to make better?]
Another event that took place in Almedalen was a new project called “Vi Gör Framtid” [We Make Future]. @ViGorFramtid. A project to bring forth people who works actively to shape the future as creative entrepreneurs.

We also talk about what do we want for next years Almedalen. What format we want on the events and what do we want to make better for next year.

The Human Quest

The Human Quest

The Human Quest [Project Homeworld]

Johan Rockström and Mattias Klum took part in a event on the first day where they talked about there work that ended up in their book “The Human Quest“. How can we build a sustainable society from both a social, an ecological and an economical viewpoint? The scientists all know what must be done yet it’s going in the wrong direction in many parts of the world. Many decision makers has invested a great deal prestige in making the wrong decisions. And they are not about to lose face in saying they where wrong anytime soon. The very clear-sighted Mark Blyth explains very well all that is wrong with our system today in his talk at the RSA: The Austerity Delusion.

Here is a write up of the monday sustainability event in Swedish.

There was also many events about a Sustainability. In fact it was the most common topic of the 2300 events this year. I went to a few of them. And it’s all clear like Mark Blyth says. If we want to have a sustainable society before it’s too late we must create Economic Incentives sooner rather than later if it is to happen.

My own name for The Human Quest would be Project HomeWorld. Referring to that this actually a spaceship we are living on. And when we start thinking about it that way it much easier to grasp and envision what earth really is to us. Our only home. We can’t buy a new one.

2030 [The Think Tanks think about the Future]

There was also several Think Tanks present like Kairos Future, Respect and Global Utmaning. They had whole day together about a Sustainable Welfare State in 2030. Karios Future also ran a series of breakfast seminars about what our society might look like in 2030 with different angles. They can all be seen here: Kairos Future i Almedalen 2013. I went to the second one about How we should Work in 2030 and the discussion was not about 2030 but rather about today and tomorrow. But apparently this was the only one that was bad. The last one was about building a New Community for 2030 and was rather good.

Futerra held another interesting seminar What messages about sustainable development can be used on Swedish people? [Vilka budskap om hållbar utveckling går hem hos svenska folket?]

I filmed it with Bambuser in 3 parts here: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Sustainability Questions from a Holistic Perspective [Take the “High” Road]

Why Austerity doesn’t work and why we must invest in our future during bad economic times.  What Mark Blyth doesn’t mention is that the economic engine that drives our modern society is all based in inputs into the system in form of energy and recourses.
Also David Stuckler talks about why Austerity is bad for health and is an evil spiral towards depression and turmoil in this RSA talk: The Body Ecomomic.

Many people are talking about what we must do or how we should do it. Or some just have their head in the sand in full denial. Or Even worse. Most people on Planet Earth have their own daily problems to deal with. But what many don’t realize is that most catastrophes and disasters on Earth has it roots in the neglect of sustainable thinking. We must take the “high” road [As in Elevated] and the Holistic approach in dealing with all problems on Earth.

TEDxAlmedalen – The Garden

TEDxAlmedalen [Let’s go boundlessness into the Future]

I also signed up to get into TEDxAlmedalen. I signed up in the first 4 minutes so I was pretty certain to get in. During the Day before we got the mail to see who could go to this very popular event. I went with 2 friends of mine Helena Roth and Maria Gustafsson and it was  very lovely inspiring event. As it had rained in the morning we was blessed with a fantastic summer evening in a lovely garden in the fantastic Visby.

The event was about new world without boundaries and borders. How far can we take Mankind on Planet Earth if we do it together. Even more hints for me that we need create more visions for the future together.

To see the whole event go to www.tedxalmedalen.se where it is dived in 2 parts on Bambuser in Swedish. Here Falkevik Danehav did another great job in filming the event.

Braiiiiiiiins [Sleep, Eat and Exercise Right]

There also was some interesting Events about the Brain. I filmed the last part on Bambuser: The Brain. Key points is that we should Sleep, Eat and Exercise right to keep our brains in trim. All of which we did not do in Almedalen 😉

Being Social [Meet, Greet and Share Ideas]

What is last thing you touch before going to sleep and what is the first thing you touch when awaking up?
It’s not your phone. It’s your Tribe. Your Social Network.

Almedalen is also about being social, eating and drinking together. To meet new and interesting people. I can’t wait to go there again. But before that much must happen. As a Futurist I want go to other “Future events” like SWSX and I want to create my own event(s). All before the next Almedalen. Do you want to join me?

Do you want to join me in creating The Future?

Let’s do this! My Future is so bright I gotta wear Google Sunglasses 🙂

My First Social Media Experience

Hong Kong Harbor 1994

Me in Hong Kong Harbor 1994

I speak Internetz [What was yours?]

It was 20 years ago in 1993. I was studying entrepreneurship [Utvecklingsingenjör] at Halmstad University. We decided that we should go to Hong Kong and China for our graduation trip. Having just discovered internet myself took it upon me to make a contact in Hong Kong before the trip. Using the Mosaic Web browser I found the Hong Kong University website and an email address. I mailed them and asked for a contact person. They replied with contact email to student there.

The Scotsman

I stared trading email with a Scotsman studying there and it was very exiting for me at the time. I was a really shy person back then and found it difficult to speak with anyone I didn’t know. So this new way of communicating really changed things for me.

Finally I had found voice I was comfortable speaking in. I speak Internetz

Unfortunately I never got to meet the Scotsman. Some time before we where going there he had to go home for some family business. But he did pass the torch to a Chinese girl studying there, who I took up email-contact with. So when getting there I had got a phone-number and made a date to meet us at the hotel where we staying. With great excitement she showed up. She invited us with her family to a local restaurant where they had no experience meeting Europeans before. They teached us how to eat with sticks and all the local Chinese customs when eating. We got served some Chinese beer in really small glasses. When we wanted more than one glass the girl came to us and said that her father was really worried. He had heard some crazy stories of drunken Europeans getting drunk and loosing control. We told them that there was really nothing to worry about unless they served us much, much more beer 🙂

She also told us that he was really worried. Because it was custom for him to pay for the food for all of us. We assured him that it was really ok in this instance to break the tradition and let us pay for ourselves. And we did have really good use of everything they taught us for the rest our trip in Hong Kong and our 4 day visit to China and Guangzhou [Canton].

Social Media Evolution [Me becoming a Futurist]

Social Media has come a long way since 1993. But for me my world changed back then and it has continued to change ever since. In 1996 we started to chat and build scripts in IRC using the mIRC client. And I started using ICQ. I was instantly hooked. From here on I started exploring all internet communication tools as they came.

With the vision of the movie Ghost in the Shell in mind I now begun thinking of the future almost every day to come. The Futurist in me was born. In spirit of this I started arranging Future and Cyber Parties in the 90-ties.

All things change in a dynamic environment [Your effort to remain the same is what limits you]

The Network Society is now a real thing happening around us.

You’re talking about redefining my identity.
I want a guarantee that I can still be myself.
There isn’t one. Why would you wish to?
All things change in a dynamic environment.
Your effort to remain the same is what limits you.
But you still haven’t answered my earlier question.
Why did you pick me?
Because we are more alike than you realize.
We resemble each other’s essence, mirror images of one another’s psyche.
Listen. I am connected to a vast network…
that has been beyond your reach and experience.
To humans, it is like staring at the sun,
a blinding brightness that conceals a source of great power.
We have been subordinate to our limitations until now.
The time has come to cast aside these bonds…
and to elevate our consciousness to a higher plane
It is time to become a part of all things. — Ghost in the Shell, 1995

What do you think about? [What is your experience?]
