What Are You Made Of?

What Are You Made Of?

We are born into this world like a modeled piece of clay. We don’t stay in this shape for very long. Left to her own devices an infant or a young child will not last long in nature. We need to change, we need to adapt. We need to learn how survive and live together as a tribe. We do this with training. We learn skills from those who already know them. Stories are used to convey wisdom from those who came before us. Then we implement it in our own way and sometimes we innovate and come up with something better. And better is never automatic.

To become better we must fail many times and we have to care enough to get up from our knees and try again. We do this either until we become good or we become better or in some cases we become great at something. Then we become the craft- or thought-leader in that field.

You are not your career. Your ability to follow instructions is not your secret to your success. You are hiding your best work, your best insights, and your best self from us every day. We now how much you care and it’s a shame that the system works overtime to push you away from the people and the projects that you care about. The world does not owe you a living. But just when you needed it, it has open a door, for you to make a difference. It’s to bad that so much time has been wasted. But it would unforgivable to wait any longer. You have the ability to contribute so much. We need you! Now, go make a Ruckus! Namaste 🙂
— Seth Godin, Leap First

In a good stagnant environment it’s easier to predict – what we need to do – to flourish. In a rapidly changing environment we need to be more adaptive and think on our feet. And come the occasional catastrophe or cataclysmic change only those who are good at adapting and co-operation survives.

What are you made of?

Right now we live in something of a shift in nature, a shift in society, a shift in the economy and shift in the community. Some call it the great acceleration. It’s a place where humans have never been before. It’s our biggest challenge and our biggest opportunity. We can either crumble under the pressure or flourish in abundance.

Sir Ken Robinson talks about the challenges and needs we have, here: How To Create The Future.

The Future

The future will bring all this at an even more rapid pace. And we need to be ready for the change. We must stop fearing change and embrace it. This is no easy feat. In many ways we are afraid of change. And yet our exceptional ability to adapt, to innovate and work together in co-operation has taken us this far. It’s about having a a growth mindset.

If we step up to the coming challenges and are ready, there no end to the possibilities on where we can go together as species on Spaceship Earth. Can we become guardians of Spaceship Earth in time?

Our Part In This

So where do we fit in? You and I? How do we get ready? If we are born ready to change but most of us don’t stay that way. How do we make ourself more ready?

We train. We train deliberately and we train hard and we train together. We lift each other up and hold each other’s back when it gets rough. I call it Level Up. We do it like in a game. We Level Up ourselves, each other, our companies and our organisations. We Level Up our society. We build a better world together.

To do this we need people dedicated to make this happen. Many of us are already doing our parts and roles of this today. Like our schools full of teachers who prepare our young in the daytime. After school it us parents and their various other activities the teach them skills and abilities.

There is a big challenge here of course. Many of the schools and parents prepare our young for the world of yesterday and not the World of Tomorrow. A past world with a stable economy, without the worry of climate change, a world of steady and slow innovation. A world where most people do what they are told at work, and at home they consume for their own private leisure. A world with no common goals and visions, other that to help grow the economy, for the sake of all the companies in it.

And higher education are often terrible at preparing us to this new world. According to Seth Godin there is now correlation between higher education and success.

Life Training

Who leads us and challenges us once we have left school? And where are the training in the many skills essential to flourish in the connection economy? According to people like Tai Lopez and me, we should be able to learn new things every week or day, on our life long journey to excellence. All of us. What did you learn today?

To change this we need a new type of leaders and roles in society. We need Change-Makers, Future Captains, Future Heroes and Mentors. People who can train and lead us thought change our whole lives. People who can set visions and show us the way. To push us through the door. And hold our hands when we get lost. To make us into Door Makers.

Future Captains and Future Heroes

My own part in this is to be a Future Captain. That’s why I call myself Captain Future [El Capitán Futuro].

A Future Captain is a person who finds and trains other Future Captains and Future Heroes. They also help guide organisations and companies in taking a deliberate part in the direction, of the future we make.

Think of it like lots of boats going into The Future – Call them Future Boats. Each Future Boat needs a captain to steer it into The Future. Each boat is also a team of people operating it together. They all need to work on getting the boat forward. Rowing in the same direction, not separate ways. That is the role of a Future Captain. To make that happen. And to coordinate the whole fleet of Future Boats, so that we’re all going in the same general direction.

On Spaceship Earth! Or big ship in space 🙂

A Future Hero is person who takes active part in creating a better future. They have one or several Future Powers that they train and use in real life, to help themselves and others in creating this future. They can form teams with other Future Heroes and/or they can act in any form of organisations to make them better as well. Each Future Boat need one or more Future Heroes.

What Are You Made Of?

We are made, and not born, they way we are. We are made out of clay, not set in stone. We are self-made and made by the influence of others.

If we are singlehandedly made into a specific shape and don’t have the tools nor the presence of other shapers it’s hard to change into something radically different and better. It is of course better if we are made flexible and capable at an earlier age. Although it’s never to late to change.

Once you have found your right combination of thinking, skills, compassion, movement passion and joy. You will have Found Your Element. Your way to flourish. To make your life into a masterpiece.

Then you know what you are made of. What you bleed. What you can’t stop doing.

So what are you made of?
What are you and the people around you making you into?
What can’t you stop doing?

This Is What I’m Made Of

I have of course listened to both Seth Godin and the song below the whole day to get the inspiration for this text.

I also launch my podcast called Framtidspodden (The Future Pod) with this post. Where I mostly talk in Swedish and sometimes in English to other Future Heroes.

How to Win Friends & Change your World

We all change every day. Do we want to get smarter, wiser and stronger or just random changes? We think we know how make better decisions as we get older. And yet we always do irrational predictable stuff. The way to come around this by choosing your surroundings and the people you spend the most time with. So how do you get new friends that you can spend more time with? And how do we design our environment so it help us to make better decisions?

Change

How to Win Friends and Influence People [Start by Changing how you treat other people]

Today I did it. Bought the audiobook How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie on Audible and started listen to it. It has been on my to-do list for a long time. I just heard a good interview with Scott Dinsmore on the Podcast Knowledge for Men (episode 39) that it was one of his favourites books. So that finally triggered me to do it. I have read the sum up lists on Wikipedia and thought that, that was it. But no. The book is full with so much insight that it is a marvel for being written in 1937. And there in lies the great mystery.

If they knew back then, by empirical evidence, that it’s great to follow all this advice. Then why aren’t we all doing it today, almost 80 years later. Why aren’t these findings taught to every kid in every school?

Well, I don’t have an answer for that. What we can do is start talking about it and teaching it today.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Here is the first list that I wrote about in my first famous blogpost: Why are we so Groupish? Get a feel for it and if you want more just find the book yourself.

Ways to Make People Like You

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
  2. Smile.
  3. Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
  4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
  5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
  6. Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

How You Really Make Decisions [Mental Shotgun, Confirmation bias and so on…]

I also found the english version of the documentary that we saw here last monday in Sweden with Dan Ariely and Daniel Kahneman about all the ways that our human brain makes thinking errors. Go se it in english here from BBC Horizon: How You Really Make Decisions.

PAW-Kahneman

Daniel Kahneman – How You Really Make Decisions

Since there are som many ways that we can do things the wrong way there is only one way to make things better. To set up the surrounding world so that is helps us and not sets us back. Design institutions, cities, laws, work, processes so that they avoid all the fallacies of the brain. And there is a lot of them. Over 145 to Kahneman’s counting.

So If changing yourself is so hard. Change your surroundings and the people you spend time with instead. Design your environment and what you come in contact with on a daily basis. Then you will come along way — Michael Sillion

Evolve the world with you in it. [The Story about Me]

We can all become better at mingle. Even if some of you are pros already there is still more skills to master. Here are some pro tips in English and in Swedish.

Almedalen [Escalating the Network Society]

Today I have been planning my trip to Crown Mingle event here in Sweden: Almedalen. Everyone who is the slightest interested in changing society here in Sweden should go there. So in preparation I have been listening to the Swedish podcast Almedalen Sherpas about making the most about your stay there. Especially episode 10 about how to mingle.

ONCE UPON A TIME [The Pixar Pitch]

I have also been Listening to Daniel Pinks tips for for pitching your self or an idea. One of the tips are the The Pixar Pitch or the Story Spine. Here is a basic outline of it. Try doing it in the voice of the American Trailer Way.

Creative Ninja Master – Holistic Thinking Ninja

So I must create a story of me. One that they will tell in thousands of years to come. I will bring about my storytelling voice and go:

ONCE UPON A TIME There was Creative Ninja Master living on Planet Earth,
EVERY DAY He would train his Creative Ninja Skills,
ONE DAY He realized that his skills could make an impact on the World,
BECAUSE OF THIS he set forth to Architect the Transformation of Society,
BECAUSE OF THIS The New Network Society is now on the right track towards a sustainable future,
UNTIL FINALLY WE all learned how to live together sharing our resources and our knowledge in an epic quest to make Earth the best place in the Universe to live.

What Survival Skills Do You Got? [Can We Adapt to a Ruined World?]

Tonight I have been at the season finale of Doc Lounge here in Varberg. This is concept where you mingle together in a lounge with bar and then watch a documentary together. This time they where showing the Norwegian documentary North of the Sun. Here you can see a 6 seconds Vine of the event.

When does change become the new Normal? [What is Normal?]

Here is is part of one of my favorite quotes from the book Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

STARS EXPLODE, WORLDS COLLIDE, THERE’S HARDLY ANYWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE WHERE HUMANS CAN LIVE WITHOUT BEING FROZEN OR FRIED, AND YET YOU BELIEVE THAT A … BED IS A NORMAL THING. IT IS THE MOST AMAZING TALENT. — DEATH, Hogfather

The Movie North of the Sun is about making a decision about living under extreme circumstances to the point where it almost becomes Normal. It’s like Terry says. We have this amazing talent to adapt. To think of and see things as normal. I read somewhere that it takes about 3 months to make something a new Normal.

With this in mind could you step away from your house and your possessions and never look back? What would it take?

These Surfers in the Movie did it. And we maybe will have to do some day too.

The Blue Ocean Planet [Lets go Blue]

In Star Wars, our planet would be designated not as a desert nor as a forest planet, but as a water planet. In media we are constantly label things that is good for the environment as Green when we instead should label things as Blue. Lets go Blue!

In North of The Sun they spend their winter picking 3 ton of plastics of the beach. We have filled our oceans with it and that is just a small part of it. We are spewing out chemicals like never before. And the rate is going up not down. You would think that in the year 2013 we where on our way to make Earth a better place to live at. Not so. Our Homeworld is getting more toxic for each day. Yet stuff like this doesn’t make the daily news like it should. If the oceans go…. so does the test of us. No kidding.

There is new Documentary just hitting DVD now and that is the movie Planet Ocean and there is new  documentary showing on cinemas in Canada now called Revolution Movie. Both is about our destruction of our oceans. Se the Trailers below. They may contain spoilers… But there is really nothing to spoil.

Think of our Blue Planet as one big Generational Spaceship where we must make sure that is all working well for generations to come.

It’s not to late. We can build a new world with a new “Normal” way to live.

Blue Planet

It will take Change [And big change come about in 3 ways]

1. Catastrophe
2. Crusade
3. Many fast iterating steps

Our Road has come to an end and we must now take 1 or some of this 3 roads weather we like it or not. What route do you want to take?

Route 3 must begin today.
Route 2 we can take tomorrow after a good nights sleep.
And finally Route 1 is waiting just around the corner with a big knife in it’s hand.

Here you can read all about how we must think to change routes:

How to Influence and Persuade #Blogg100

#019 [XIX]
Why our decisions usually goes with what the Tribe wants [Are you a Tribesman?]

I got the tip from Helena Viberg about the 6 Principles of Influence and Persuasion according to science. See the excellent animated Youtube video below or read this great blog: Cialdini’s Six Principles of Influence.

influence

1. Reciprocity

We humans are programmed to return Favors. Here it helps to be the first to give and make sure that what you give feels natural and with the receiver in mind.

2. Scarcity

By making something limited in numbers or by window of time it’s available, we increase the level by which we desire it. The Feeling that we will miss out if we don’t act now and the opportunity will be gone forever.

3. Authority

We feel a sense of duty or obligation to people in positions of authority or in uniform. We listen to what credible experts say.

4. Consistency and Commitment

Once we made a commitment however big or small, we like to stay with that commitment as not to look the fool. If you want a big decision grounded. Make someone make a small insignificant commitment in same tune.

5. Liking

We tend to be more influenced by people we like. People we trust or people who pay us compliments or people who seems similar to us. People we feel we belong to. Try to establish common ground. What are your similar goals and believes?

6. Consensus

If someone is uncertain in their choices they tend to look at what others have done before them. In general we don’t want to stand out doing the odd thing. We easily follow the Buzz or the Flow of the tribe.

Daniel Pink - Life’s a pitch

Daniel Pink – Life’s a pitch

The Art of Persuasion [Attunement – Buoyancy – Clarity]

Cialdini’s 6 steps are from are from 1984. Do they go hand in hand with Daniel Pink’s ABCs of Persuasion: Attunement, Buoyancy and Clarity?  Are Pink’s model a little more updated or are they just the same?

What do you think?

Dan Ariely also tells us that if we want someone to choose from 2 similar choices. Throw in a slightly less attractive version of the one we want them to choose and they are more likely to choose door number 1.

Are you under the influence? [Who is inside your head poking around?]

Also keep them in mind when you are going to make an important decision. How are others influencing your decision process. Make up a list and try to identify these 6 points. Are you been tricked?

And remember as always. With every new skill you learn use it responsibility and for the better good.
