Put Words To Your Thoughts

Just kidding. This is my beginning of new quest that many friends new and old begins on this day. Well it is actually several quests. The first one is the #Blogg100 challenge that me and many others jump on again this year where I will be sharing my story on this quest. It will be full my written thoughts and insights combined with some audio- and video blogs of the same. We will do this every day for the coming 100 days. Do join in this challenge. It’s okay to start late. The most important thing about blogging is that you write for yourself by putting words to your thoughts. In that process your thoughts become so much clearer and crystallized.

The first year I did this in 2013 really changed my life to the better. I found a sense of purpose and direction into the future that I am still navigating. This would later result that in the autumn of 2015 I redefined my role as Captain Future. A Future-captain. A person who helps others in navigating the future we want and setting their direction into this future. I did this in taking the #ULAB MOOC while pre-sensing my own future with the help of my coaching circle.

Co-Creating The Future

The other quest that starts today for me and others is the #BurningManWeek in Stockholm and the Burning Man European Leadership Summit. This week is all about we can take what is best for the co-creating and participatory culture of Burning Man and apply that in creating new form of innovation, leadership and democracy.

This is also the first official start this year for me, in our common theme this year in #PrototypingTheFuture. We will do this at a lot of great events in what we call the Impact Journey. It will have its cresendo in October with Nordic Impact Week in San Franciscio. More on that in coming episodes.

My part in this talking to people why and how we actually do this. I do this in all my channels like this blog, my podcast #Framtidspodden (The Future Pod) and my new audio and video show called #TheCaptainFutureShow

Four Two (42) – We Do It Together

I knew from the beginning, that this week would be another milestone in my life. That I would turn out transformed in the end of it. And by that I mean more transformed than usual. It was week full of excitement, inspiration, realisations and love. The great finale was the Urban Burn event in Stockholm.

As I finished it, by watching Avengers: Age Of Ultron,¬†with Sara Modig’s husband and children, one word really stood out: Together. It’s the word Captain America uses several times to describe how to face an unseemingly large challenge. And how I, as Captain Future, would like us to face the future. We face it together! This is the third time I watch Age of Ultron and it was even better this time, filled with so many parallels to our challenges. The best movie of 2015 for me. My Crazy Week of Together

“Peace In Our Time” – Tony Stark

The week stared on Sunday. I joined in the closing ceremony for a year and half long project here in Varberg called Varberg Calling for Peace. A project that Jon & Malin, who I talk to in my podcast¬†Framtidspodden, has facilitated. It’s project that have brought modern thinking into how we create the peaceful creative society we want. It’s been done by coordinating lots of small and big events. Often through open creative meetings they call: Open Call. Where everyone can participate in innovating the events we want to create. Since we didn’t want the energy to end we had an event where everyone could write down something on a big yellow pilates-ball. That we then passed on to someone who was tasked in keeping the idea or event alive. Mine was to create The Future-Dojo, that I have talked about before. Where we gather a lot of creative activities together in one big creative mesh. Like an incubator, a co-corcing place, a cafe, a mentor center, a Future Center, a MakerSpace, a playground and son on with lots of activities like Hackathons and Lunch-beats. The sky is the limit.

And I aslo believe if we are to build a better world together, it’s not just something we can do in our “spare time”, when we are not “working” for money. It has to be done in all activities in all levels of society. We have to be able to make and earn money down what the world needs. And the other way around. Not making any money when we do the wrong things unto the world.

The more people what spend their waking hours building a better world the quicker we will get there. We do it to- … wait for it … -gether ūüôā

Success & Entrepreneurship

I stared my week by prepping for my Framtidslunch [Future Lunch] and my Pecha Kucha by studying John Spence and his take on Success. With the YouTube clip and my show notes.

I also visited a great lunch seminar with Jannike √Öhlgren about the new incubator Potential.VBG, in my hometown Varberg. An incubator is a place where newly started businesses sit together to get a much more successful launch. It’s all about the environment. You become like the people you spend the most time with.

Success comes from being together with other awesome people!

Future Lunch [Live Your Legend Local]

On the Tuesday it was time for my¬†Framtidslunch [Future Lunch] in Varberg. It’s a concept where awesome people get together to boost each other and have some kind of creative workshop together. It’s part of me hosting my Live Your Legend Local events here on the west coast of Sweden.

Tuesday also brings forth the International Women’s Day. It’s been a long fight to give women to become equal citizens with us men. And it’s not over. Watch the movie Suffragette. Where we can see the importance to organise and fight for change, together.

Our next lunch will be in March 22nd in Varberg with the theme pitching. And there will be a Future Party on March 31st as well.

Authoritarianism

I also read the best article, that explains the counter forces we are facing. Like the Trump-march¬†in the US. It’s all due to a thing called Authoritarianism. Not a thing, we want more people doing together. And we can’t fight them. The feed of fear and opposition. The best way to disarm them is by not filling the news and media with fear, like what most of¬†massmedia does today. I’ve spoken against this for many years. Fill the news with positive things happening instead. ¬†Solutions, not problems. By leading by example and visions. For every challenge, we answer this 3 questions:

1. What challenge are we facing?
2. What might solve it?
3. How can I help?

Hot As Hell

This winter has yet again been the hottest winter on the north pole that we know of. If we don’t do something soon together, it brings chaos, into the human world, that we don’t want. We act together for a sustainable future!

Code Of Conduct

I also got a call from upcoming eSport LAN where they want me to talk about how we get rid of all the Toxicness that is a big challenge for all online gaming. Especial in my favorite game League of Legends. Riot Games has done a great deal to fight it of. Still there some lingering problems that is spreading across the whole of internet. Not just in eSport but on the internet as a whole.

We need a better a Code Of Conduct on how we behave in this world. A Moral Matrix that we can evolve and talk about. I will do my utmost to lift this problem to the surface in creative constructive way. As there are many more LAN-parties coming up this spring in Sweden I would like to visit as many I can and talk on all of them. So if you are an organizer and would like me to talk on your event please contact me.

We do it by being nice to each other both offline and online.

Strength – Health & Happiness — Wim Hof

I also finally watched the documentary with Wim Hof about how he can endure the cold through simple breathing techniques. Watch it here:¬†Inside the Superhuman World of the Iceman. I have tried it a couple of times before. This time I downloaded his app and started doing the breathing exercises, with stretching and push ups. I haven’t¬†tried showering¬†in cold water yet. But is about time.

Wim is on a mission. A mission to give all humans more Strength – Health & Happiness. And it is something I think is very important as it will solve a lot problems in the world.

This Thursday I visited¬†Framtidsmaskinen [The Future Machine] in Halmstad. It’s a fair for young entrepreneurs, coupled with a great event for us grown ups as well. We did a World Cafe event where we talked about how¬†to make the world more creative and what we ourself, could do to make it happen… Together ūüôā

We finished it of by pledging, what each and every one of us, could do. I promise to keep doing my Future Lunches twice a month and also do a Future Breakfast and a Future Party (all in the spirit of Live Your Legend) once a month.

Be the SHIELD

It is finally Friday and I’m of to Stockholm to attend a¬†large-scale indoor Burn. It’s a¬†Burning Man event called Urban Burn. On my way there, I watched an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D¬†season 3 where Coulson explains why he risks his life, to do, what he does. He does it to protect those¬†who can’t, protect¬†themselves. And the number of accepted casualties is always ZERO. They protect us, by being a great team.

SXSW –¬†South by South West

There is also a festival going on in Austin, Texas, this week called SXSW (South by South West). It’s one¬†of the worlds largest creative festivals. Where people get together to be inspired and get more creative energy. I’ve been longing to go for 4¬†years now and I promised to go next year now with Sara and others.

From this year there are at least 2 awesome keynotes from both Jane McGonigal and Barak Obama

Jane McGonigal. Jane shared her speech and I saw it on the train up to Stockholm as well. One thing stood out there as well and it was this:

Time For Urban Burn

As I arrived in Stockholm I went straight to the Urban Burn festival. I was immediately welcomed, hugged and initiated with the welcome ritual. This is my first Burn and it felt completely overwhelming. Joining this creation in a participatory culture as the final pieces were put in place was exiting.

One in a Ulab Theroy U coaching circle and the other in how we activate the Hive-Switch (Where we become more than ourselves) in out brains. Which is especially easy at a festival of this kind.

Originally most of us where planing to go here but only Tess and I where able to make it in the end. Tess and I held a great circle with some other burners that can be summed up in phrase: Find the Others. This is big part of my Level Up! concept.

The Avatar – Mushroom Forest

Have you seen one of my favorite movies: Avatar? If you have, did¬†you wonder what it would be like running around in the luminescent night forest? I just found out. It can’t be explained. It has to be experienced. And I did in the awesome Magical Mushroom Forest installation at Urban Burn. So cool!

And everywhere we went we greeted each other with a hug. And the not the formal kind. Instead is was long warm loving hugs. This how I want the future to be. There were¬†even a booth where you could Kiss A Stranger. If you wanted to. You stared into a strangers eyes for 2 minutes,, then kissing was optional. “Live a little” ‚̧

Rave Yoga

One of the coolest thing I experienced there was a Dance Yoga session with Christian Wigardt. Even the Downward Facing Dog was done while swaying the hips from side to side. The best yoga I have done so far.

Rave [Turning on the Hive-Switch]

And the there was the dancing together! To Rave music. The last hour of Saturday was a special gig by Jesper Lejfjord with an awesome kind of Dubstep I never heard before.

I went completely bonkers. Deep in the Hive-Switch / I love everybody Рterritory, I danced like I never done before.

I one of the tents I joined in a sing along session. We did Imagine at least 4 times. My eyes filled with tears of joy. That powerful feeling when you do it together!

Hack the Future

On Sunday I went to visit the last part of the Hackathon Hack For Sweden #Hack4Swe. This was a great Hackathon with lots of creative solutions. There and on the way home I spoke to several people like Mattias √Ėstmar and Darja Isaksson about what we can do to create more creative Hackathons.

A Hackathon not so much an event where you go to see or listen in the classical passive way. It’s a new type of event in the participatory culture category, like the Burns and the¬†Un-conferences. Where all the attending people are participating in co-creating the event.

I think we can do a more creative type of event where we bring in people from different type of creative groups. I’m have a lot in mind like: Hackers, Coders, Designers, Cosplayers, Streamers, YouTubers (Vloggers), Entrepreneurs, Startup people,¬†Information Officers, NERF-hackers, Steampunkers, Makers, Burners, Gamers, Geeks, LARPers, Artists, Thinkers, Bloggers, Scientists

I am fascinated with the creative power in many of these groups. Many of them are fans of pop-culture worlds and works. They in turn can have many fans them selves, from hundreds up to millions of fans. Think what that would do to an event. If you can come co-create with some your favorite idols. At first you would come there as fan and being starstruck. Then after a while that will wear off and we would actually realize that we all have our creative talents in some way. That when we work together, with different angles to view a challenge ora problem, we are much more likely to come up with new innovative solutions.

I get exited just thinking about it.

Design For Engagement

Here it is. My take on making comprehensive overview of what to think about when designing an event or an activity of any kind. Things to think about is who is it for and why should they care about doing it? Look what others have designed before you and steal the best parts and experiment with them.

1. Build a story that it is easy to share into the activity you are designing!

2. Use Design Thinking! Who is your audience?

3. Onboarding and sacrifice are things to consider.

4. Find your ambassadors and elevate them!

5. Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

6. Build content and a community around your event and prolong the experience!

Make things full with Flow, Fun, Friends and Meaning [Design For Engagement]

When designing any kind of¬†activity, game, competition, puzzle,¬†event, learning, system or challenge it’s good to have¬†in mind the basic fundamentals of what motivates and triggers people to join in or take action. This is also great advice when doing crowdfunding events on sites like Kickstarter.

The activity can be learning a skill or a trade. All things we do is practice and leaning in some way towards some form improvement or mastery. When things are “Just For Fun”, it’s mostly then we are learning the fastest. Getting into “Flow” is usually the most effective way of learning something or to be the most productive in that activity. Some of the thinking here I have borrowed directly from Amy Jo Kim’s lecture¬†mostly about gaming. I think it can be applied to most human activities. I also focus mainly on the positive motivations. Sure there are many strong negative feelings that drives change and motivation like fear, hate, revenge. But I don’t go¬†to into how to design for them here. Instead I try to focus what makes things fly.

Triggers of The Element
[Cognitive – Athletic – Competition – Cooperation – Exploration – Expression- Collecting]

There are 6 elements in an activity that can be combined to trigger different kind of things in people: Cognitive Challenge, Athletic Challenge, Competitive, Cooperation, Exploration, Expression. The users, combatant, player and adventurer is just not one style but a combination of these. Get to know your different user styles of the activity. Find out what types they are and how to design for them.

There is also the bonus category of Collecting

1 Cognitive Challenge

Many games – puzzles and activities revolve around a cognitive challenge that we can solve in some kind. Without this challenge many of feel that a challenge becomes dull rather shortly. It is all about hitting that sweet-spot of Flow where the challenge is just hard enough.

2 Athletic & Agility Challenge

Just as many activities contains challenges for the brain many other contains physical challenges for the muscles in some way. Be it agility, endurance, strength, or athletic ability. Almost all sports fall in the category and triggers us in so many ways. But there are also lots of other activities that we do just for fun or the challenge of intrinsic mastery. Here is also the sweet-spot of Flow somthing thats makes the activity engaging.

3 Competition

Many of us trigger by the need to compete and measure us against each other. Be it the sole competitor or a whole team against each other. This is a basic human need. The need to seem strong in front the tribe. And to seem extra useful for the Tribe. This usually followed by increased status, fame and attractiveness in the fair sex.

Competitions, Sports, Games and different forms of Challenges can been used to trigger this part of us.

4 Cooperation & Social

Humanities greatest feast is the ability to co-operate towards a common goal. A lone human had little chance of survival in the past. A great tribe of a 100 individuals could solve almost anything. We have it built into our DNA to work together and get rewarded for it on many levels. Jonathan Haidt explains this so well.

It feels great giving and helping others without the need for reciprocity. It is what binds tribes together.

Some people just like to play games as it is an activity we do together with other people. We like to do social activities.

5 Exploration

We humans are also explorers by nature. Not all but some of us get the sudden urge to seek out new unknown territory to wander in. The lust for exploration is very strong and can take form in many shapes. This is very powerfully portrayed in the this epic clip narrated by Carl Sagan: Wanderers.

Activities that includes Adventure, Mystique and Puzzles Solving are all good ways to “explore” this drive in human nature.

6 Expression

One of our most unique traits is the ability and need to express ourselves. From¬†how we look, dress and garnish our body to external expression through art and stories. The need to both be unique, and fit in, in the tribe at the same time. To put our twist on ourselves. And also the need to create, tinker, improve and “hack” things.

Radical Self-Expression is also part of one the 10 principles of Burning Man.

Making Things Magic!

Of course there are many more needs and desires that drive us humans like love, lust, belonging, righteousness, rebellion, fear, hate, revenge and need for the adrenaline rush. Still, these 6 big is a great way to start when designing an activity. Just focusing on one of them works great. Or combining them for a complex activity that attracts different people for different reasons works even gretater. Especial if it’s an activity done together with others.

With this is in mind, we can easier understand how to make an event more magic.

7 Harvesting – Collecting & Hoarding

There is also another aspect we trigger when we play games. Is has to do mostly with gather siade of Hunter gathering that later lead to many of us being able to farm and harvest as a way of living. It’s both sowing things an help them grow and at last harvest.

We also like to collecting things. And when have things we like to sort and arrange them in different ways too. We get a kick out of finding that rare bush of berries or that occasional lagoon full of oysters. This is easily transferable into an activity or game of any kind where we can collect things and hunt down rare objects.

Intrinsic Motivations and PERMA

When we know what kind of activity to make we can then increase the level of engagement people feel when doing it. There are many models and names for the intrinsic motivations we have. I chose to incorporate them into Martin Seligmans’s and Jane McGonigal’s PERMA model. In it we divide out internal motivations into 5 categories. One that can arguably be said is missing is the reward we feel during and after any physical performance. And ultimately like I do, the ability to put oneself into trance and triggering the Hive-Switch in the brain. Still here we go. Put more PERMA into your design:

P ‚Äď Positive Emotions¬†‚Äď We all like experiencing positive emotions like urgent optimism,¬†joy, peace, gratitude, satisfaction, trust, pride, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, or love. These emotions move us along when triggering the other forms of motivations. Arguably we can put the feelings we feel when sexually aroused or the rush we feel when dancing with danger here too.

E ‚Äď Engagement (or flow)¬†‚Äď When a situation, task, or project are in the sweet-spot between¬†our current skill level and the difficulty of the activity we often experience a state of flow. We lose track of time & space around us. We¬†becomes totally engulfed in the activity at hand. The ability for a person or a whole team to themselves into flow has been measured to be the largest contributor to the success of any endeavour. This is linked¬†to the oh so popular concept of following ones passion. This is the right path towards mastery.

R ‚Äď Relationships¬†‚Äď The need for belonging in a social context is very strong. We all want to be seen, heard and¬†acknowledged within the tribe. It’s also more important to been known for contributing to the tribe than actually doing it without any recognition.

Being social with others is at the core of what it is to being human. When having good relationships with others, is when are at our best. Co-operation and friendly competition brings out the best in us. Make the user interact with others in the system or have them sharing about content in the system outside it.

M ‚Äď Meaning¬†‚Äď Meaning comes from creating a purposeful narrative about our lives. A story where we are part in something bigger than our-self. We will often sacralize something in the group that brings meaning to us. Finding ones purpose in life can be a powerful thing indeed. Humans have it in them seek meaning and spirituality. It’s what we do. Here is great clip about¬†Burning Man explaining it all.

Designing activities with a greater purpose and a greater vision behind them is the way to go. So many things and leaders in our society, act without a clear vision where they are taking us.

A ‚Äď Accomplishments¬†‚Äď We often seek Mastery in some form. And completing our goals and following our core values. Or we can just get good feedback and rewards from an activity we are carrying out, which also give great satisfaction. Enhance the progress the user is making by giving them great feedback.

Integrate feedback into the activity loop of the current activity. We just love checking things of our to-do list. Or getting the great feeling of completing or launching things on a grander scale. When we down that boss in an epic game. Throw your arms in the air for that great Fiero moment.

What humanity desperately need right now is a vision where we can go as a species – #BurningMan

Another way and model that I also like is the one called the 4Ps by Storyarchitects with People РPurpose РPassion РPleasure developed by Jasmine Idun Lyman. You can probably see where this model overlaps with the one above.

Flow – Mastery and Passion

On of the most talked about thing now is the notion that you should find and follow your passion. This is both true or as Tai Lopez calls it: Accurate. It’s all about design an activity with life-cycle aspect in mind. Start with Onboarding for the Newbie like Amy Jo Kim¬†says. Then makes sure there are different challenges with increasing difficulty so that a participant can easily get into flow depending on their skill level. Not all event should have all skill levels depending on what type of activity it is. Over time a well design activity develops passion in the participant as they increase their skill level on their journey.

Tim Ferriss has a new TV show out called The Tim Ferriss Experiment where he tries to master 13 different challenging skills in just 5 days. In order to do this he needs apply a very precise set of points to stay in flow and take the quickest route towards the path of mastery. He shows us that it is possible to learn a skill very fast with the right and best teachers, science, technique, motivation, attitude and design thinking.

Stories
All great activities and products have an inbuilt story. One that we can tell our self while doing it. A kind of internal Self-Narration. And another that we can tell others and share before, during and after an activity. Here it helps designing content and context around the activity that can be shared and easily internalized.

We are basically a storytelling ape with a big brain that is excellent in recognising, enjoying and telling stories.

 

Sacrifice and Pain
Some activities also benefits if there is some kind of sacrifice, hardship and pain built into them. It scares some people away and attract others. Physical challenges and some competitions often use this to great benefit. The benefits of doing something hard and painful are often enjoyed after the event. When the pain is forgotten and all we have left is a good story. Doing hard stuff together with others and sharing the pain also brings people closer together and builds bonds.

It also makes people much more emotionally invested in the event. Which in turn makes for better long term commitment and creates excellent ambassadors.

Try to sell the story people can tell when they are part if an exclusive tribe that have mastered the challenge.

Scarcity and VIP
We all like to be VIP och part of some exclusive tribe sometimes. By making an activity only available to a selected few who either cued for the event or paid extra to get extra treatments and perks is great way to increase the overall attractiveness of the event. This is used with great success in crowdfunding activities with different perk levels. Here scarcity both in time and in the number of available slots serves a way to make people sign up faster.

Give people the ability to feel or dream about the status and exclusiveness that a special offer or VIP treatment brings.

Ambassadors
Any event or activity also needs great Ambassadors to flourish. Try to find people who are willing to invest time and energy into it. Or the people who are already doing it. The can be in it for some of the different reasons mentioned above. Interact with them. Give them VIP treatment. Ask them how you can improve the experience. Study them. Give them options to tell your story to more people.

Feel the Rush
Some activities is all about the adrenaline or rush we can feel when doing something exciting and dangerous. Some people become adrenaline junkies and are always looking for more ways to experience more rushes. All things that get the human mind rushing is alluring.

How can you make your activity more exciting?

Choice and Autonomy
People like making choices. This makes us feel autonomous. It’s just that we are different when we think about what rules we want to follow when making choices and forming habits.¬†Gretchen Rubin divides us into 4 different type of people when adopting new habits:¬†Obligers, Questioners, Upholders and Rebels. Of course many of us like the excitement and angst when choosing between different options.

Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

Prolong and improve the experience
If you are dealing with a event or happening in any way the is ways to prolong and extend the experience. Build up the campaign with onboarding and signaling. Like in the Tesla Launch.

Use social media and #hashtags to get people talking and interacting both with you and other fans long before the event. During the event get people talking using #Hashtags and other tools. make them livestream the event with their smartphones and do use a professional livestreaming team as well. After the event encourage people to share their experience with all kinds of media like videos, photos, blogs, podcasts, forums and Facebook groups.

The Duality of Man [Can we work together?]

Working together is as important as ever. So I dug up my old post about Jonathan Haidt’s research and book about why we are able to cooperate in the first place and build large societies that we have done today. It’s all being able switch the mind to a state where it transcends its own self-interest. Jonathan calls this ability the Hive Switch. The 3 most common ways to switch this state on is by doing some of the follow things together:
1. Experience awe of nature.
2. Dancing intensely to club music or at a rave.
3. Physically triggering it with drugs like psilocybin.

Many of the 6 triggers can be found at festivals like Burning Man. Who many think is the ultimate human experience.

So do find in yourself to reach out to others and build connections that will transform our¬†society to the better. And do understand the human brain’s many designs like¬†Sacralization.

Find Your Tribe(s) And With On the Hive-Switch

Here is his full summary on the Hive Switch chapter:

“When I began writing The Happiness Hypothesis, I believed that happiness came from within, as Buddha and the Stoic philosophers said thousand of years ago. You’ll never make the world conform to your wishes, so focus on changing yourself and your desires. But by the time I finished writing, I had changed my mind: Happiness comes from between. It comes from getting the right relationships between yourself and others, yourself and your work, and yourself and something larger than yourself.

Once you understand our dual nature, including our groupish overlay, you can see why happiness comes from between. We evolved to live in groups. Our minds were designed not only to help us win the competition within our groups, but also to help us unite with those in our group to win completion across groups.

In this chapter I presented the hive hypothesis, which states that human beings are conditional hive creatures. We have the ability (under special circumstances) to transcend self-interest and lose ourselves (temporally and ecstatically) in something larger than ourselves. I call this ability the Hive Switch. The Hive Switch is another way in stating Durkheim’s idea that we are Homo duplex; we live most of our lives in the ordinary (profane) world, but we achieve our greatest joys in those brief moments of transit into the sacred world, in which we become “simply a part of the whole”.

I describe three common ways in which people flip the Hive Switch: Awe of Nature, Durkheimian drugs and raves. I describe recent findings about oxytocin and mirror neurones that suggest that they are the stuff of which the Hive Switch are made. Oxytocin bounds people to their groups, not all of humanity. Mirror neurones help people empathise with others, but particularly those that share their Moral Matrix.

It would be nice to believe that we humans were deigned to love everyone unconditionally. Nice, but rather unlikely from an evolutionary perspective. Parochial love [Love within groups] amplified by similarity, a sense of shared fate, and the suppression of free riders, may the most we can accomplish.”

Can we work together? [Homo Duplex]

We are all stuck here for a while. So let’s try to work it out!

I have been listening to The Groupish Gene: Hive psychology and the origins of morality and religion from The RSA with Jonathan Haidt and reading his 2 books ‘The Happiness Hypothesis‘ and ‘The Righteous Mind‘. He tells us why we do things in groups and why we are born to co-operate.

Thanks to a single mutation in our jaw muscle, around 2.4 million years ago, the human species where capable of growing a much larger skull and thus leaving place for a larger brain. With this brain we where able start evolving complex social structures and more advanced groupish behavior.

We became the Tribal and Storytelling Chimp.

Pan Narrans – [The Story Telling Chimp]

We are not a bee-hive and we are not The Borg. However¬†we are a groupish species that are 90% chimp and 10% hive-mind. We are Pan narrans, the storytelling ape. It’s a term by Terry Pratchett, Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart that they coined in the book Science of Discworld II. Our brains is a storytelling and pattern recognition system that acts like everything is part of a story. I talk more about Storytelling in this blog Your Story ūüôā

We are all Groupish vehicles for human genes. We became able to use a set of shared intentionality that later developed into a shared Moral Matrix for the group.

This Moral Matrices then enable each group to elect something sacred for the group that we could circle around and the defend in a very irrational way. This sacralization bound us together and made us blind to rational evidence.

The Hive Switch [Let’s go raving]

We humans have the ability (under special circumstances) to transcend self-interest and lose ourselves (temporarily and ecstatically) in something larger than ourselves. Haidt calls this ability The Hive Switch. This leads to a sense of shared fate. This is present in the PERMA model of what makes us flourish by Martin Seligman.

We think that this Hive-Switch is made out of Oxytocin (witch I talk about before) and Mirror Neurons. It can be triggered in many ways but some of the easiest is experience Awe of Nature together or becoming in a state of Trance when dancing together to Trance music at a club or at a rave.

The Elephant and The Rider

The best mental model and metaphor for our brain is that of a very large elephant that makes up most parts of our brain that are in a constant debate of what decisions make. Then we have the small rider that is our conscious thought and reasoning.

The Elephant stands for our intuition that makes constant and instantaneous decisions. The Rider then works like Press secretary that makes up a story that correlates and justifies with the decision made by The Elephant. With the help of this Press secretary, we are able to lie and cheat often, and then cover it up so effectively that we convince even ourselves. Dan Ariely talks of why we are so good at lying in his new book The Honest Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone – Especially Ourselves

The Elephant itself consist of many small parts of the brain that is in constant “conflict” with each others on what decisions to make. David Eagleman explains this great in his book Incognito.

The Rider is there to guide the Elephant where to go and what decisions to make but the Elephant and it’s many parts are in charge.

Intuition comes first and Strategic Reasoning second

Reasoning has evolved to help us engage in arguments, persuasion and manipulation in the context of discussion with other people. It helps us look good in the social context of the group and help further our reputation and agenda within the group. But it also help us defend our group and its moral beliefs. All this has been a key to our survival and success here on earth.

“We are obsessively concerned about what others think of us, although much of the concern is unconscious and invisible to us”

We as individuals are very good at finding evidence that supports the view and standpoint we are already holding, mostly for intuitive reasons. This is called Confirmation Bias. That’s why it’s so hard to look to the other side and find evidence against your own point of view. Other people do us this favor so much better for us, as we do for them. This is why we should always be vary for an individual’s ability to reason. It is much better done in a group. But not just any arbitrary group.

It’s important that any group whose goal is to find any truth or make any important decisions to have an intellectual and ideological diversity.

If you want to change another group or individual the easiest way is to change the path the Elephant is traveling on not the Elephant itself. This is discussed in the book Switch in more detail. Many of advice found in the book How to Win Friends and Influence People from 1936 are still very good advice into how to change another group or person:

1. Become genuinely interested in other people
2. Smile or even better Hug!
3. Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
5. Make the other person feel important ‚Äď and do it sincerely

Building a better world together

What steps can we take make use of this knowledge and build a better world together?

1. Understand Sacralization
If you want to understand another group follow their sacredness. Recognize that they have something sacred that you don’t really understand and that they will defend with blind faith. When you attack it they will appear to act very irrational and unresponsive to your views.

2. Talk to the Elephant
If you want to change someones mind talk to the Elephant first. Start by bringing up some points of commonality and establish some way of trust. Then when you bring up matters of your different Moral Matrices. Begin by giving praise or give a sincere expression of interest. Then build on from there to a more common ground.

3. Moralize Demonization
Stop demonizing another group for their believes and sacred values. We are all prone to fall victim to the myth of Pure Evil. Where we self feel “Victim” to some form of injustice. So when you see or hear someone demonizing something, politely remind them that they are demonizing and that doesn’t lead anywhere.

4. Groupishness must be Managed
It’s easy for our groupish behavior to get out of control. Therefore we must help each other to monitoring our behavior so that it applies to a Moral Matrix we all can agree on.

All groups that seeks out some form of truth or affects other groups in any way must have both intellectual and ideological diversity.

5. The Earth Tribe?
Is there a way to unite all humanity on earth as to create a global human tribe? The only way we see this happening is by us being under attack from a common enemy like a global virus outbreak or some other global catastrophe like climate change, which accidentally we now we are facing. With common visions, obstacles and challenges maybe we can pull it together long enough to save life on this planet.

In the meantime all we can hope for is a new emergent network society with many small groups pulling in the same direction. Here Social Media comes out a as great tool for bringing all those groups together ūüôā

Moral Matrix of the Mind

We are deeply intuitive creature whose gut feeling drives our strategic reasoning. This makes it difficult – but not impossible – to connect with those who live in another Moral Matrix of the Mind. This is exactly like in the movie The Matrix. We live in different worlds in our minds.

We are all stuck here for a while. So let’s try to work it out
