Elevate Your Mind

On what level do you experience the world?

Are you stuck in fixed mindset or are you growing yourself, your mind and the people around you? Get out of victim mode. Even the most “successful” people in the world have bad days. And they are working hard not be there for long and stay in the “Through Me” or “As Me” mode as much as the can. And so should you!

And do check out What my friend Tess writes about Peter Sage in Swedish. Both his levels of thinking about the world and experience the world.

I also recorded a new pod in English about Hacking Your Future.

Happy Hacking!
Happy Future!

Level Up Your Consciousness

In what mode do you view the world and everything that is happening? What is your attitude towards events and your level of control over them? A long time favorite of mine, Peter Sage, explains in such a great way in this 5 minute clip from the long talk with Peter Sage on London Real where he explains 4 the levels of awareness in which you interact with the world. And it’s well worth it to listen his whole talk on London Real.

Update June 2016: There is new clip with Peter Sage here abut it: Understanding Yourself: Four Levels of Consciousness

These levels are in some way correlated to Robert Kegan’s research on the five orders of consciousness. Where by training your brain in various ways creates a lot more connections between your synapses over the years and thereby reaching new levels of consciousness. Give him a listen on the RSA.

Or read about his 5 levels here or in this new blog on medium: Part 1: How To Be An Adult.

The 4th level ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind and the 5th level ‘Self-Transforming’ Mind is in some way connected with Peter’s 3rd and 4th level. You can get there faster by the right stimuli but it is still going to take years and you are likely to get there by midlife.

Get to it, and start level up your own mind and help elevate your core group around you.

Peter Sage on London Real

Peter Sage on London Real

1 – To Me – Victim Mode

This is the Victim mode. Were the world happens to you. You are not in control of your own fate and your are constantly blaming others and world events for your demise. This is a very hard mode to get out of. It has very much to-do with the people that surround you. Oftentimes is it essential that you upgrade your peer group if you can. Other ways can be to get a mentor or a role-model to mimic. The hardest part is often to recognise that you can change. This is also called of having a fixed mindset. Or playing the blame game.

To get out you have to do what Derek Sivers says: Purge The Vampires! And upgrade your peer group.

You are standing beside the river are envious on those to seem to swim so easily in it.

2  – By Me – Go Get It Mode

This is when you have a Go get it attitude towards the world. You are trying to take full control of the reins of your life, bending everything around you to your will. You set goals and you go after them. You have given up blame and started coming more into a growth mindset. You take personal responsibility for your future.

To jump in the river and swim against the current.

Life happens by you. This will often result in clash of wills and conflict of interest. To level up from this mode you often need more wisdom and influence of kindness. It can be done by just starting to give more.

3 – Through Me – Flow Mode

You start seeing the world more like a flow state. Life happens through you. You are losing up your need for control. You start building your network by giving instead of taking. In some magical way, the more you give the more things are stating flow back to you. Life happens for you. You start have faith in those around you and you start building trust.

Here is also differs a little from Robert Kegan’s view as you can reach this level of understanding at a young age and still not had time to make all synapse connection in your brains that come with wisdom. Still you will reach his 4th level of the ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind much quicker, by being in this mindset.

You start getting the river to work for you. You use the current and the winds to take you not in a straight line but to unexpected places by being open to change and by being curious. You can more easily let go of the FOMO. You stop chasing goals and trust the direction, the journey and the dreams of your life.

You level up yourself and elevate everyone around you. The world is no longer a zero sum game. With the help of mindfulness to take your mind further. You take you core group with you on your journey.

4 – As Me – Oneness Mode

You become one with the universe, Literally. As everything in the universe affect everything else.

See yourself in everything else. A conscious unity with everything around you. Get into oneness with the universe.

Give up the illusion of separateness! – Peter Sage

This is of course not a state you can be in all the time. It’s a journey. Towards unconditional love. You enter this mode as often as you can through various activities like meditation and mindfulness. Here is where his model differs from Kegan’s model too. But the more connected your mind becomes when entering the ‘Self-Authoring’ Mind and the ‘Self-Transforming’ Mind mode the more easy it will become to enter As Me thinking.

There is also the other way into this way of experience the world, that can entered by switching on what Jonathan Hadit calls “The Hive-Switch” in the mind. You do this by doing things like experience Awe of nature. Some other ways to activate this mode in the brains is to take psilocybin or getting into trance dancing rave.

I’m a raver for life!

I think they are very related.

Hack The Future

You can’t solve a problem on the same level thinking that created the problem –  Albert Einstein

And that sums up they way to actually build a better future. We climb both the ladders above. Both Peter’s description on how we experience the world and Kegan’s thinking on how we grow our minds.

To change a behaviour you need a new emotional level of understanding. To shift your thinking from a goal to an identity. Working with identities is very powerful. Have identity shifts. Redefine your current identities and make up new ones.

The strongest force in human personality is the need to remain consistent with how you define yourself, your identity – Peter Sage & Tony Robinson

So set yourself for the win. Get the right peer groups and mentors that enforces the shift in identity and behaviour. If you can’t find a mentor do what I and many, many more people have done throughout history

– -> Read their books. And in recent years we also have access to fantastic mind-boggling podcasts and online lecture video talks like TED and Talks at Google and many more. This how I have spent the last 4 years leveling up my mind and thinking.

And put yourself in the right environment

If you are trying to eat less sugar. Don’t have sugar at home and don’t hang around people drinking soda. Don’t define yourself as a recovering sugar addict. Be a happy life-hacker and spend time with other health hackers.

If you want to start exercising more. Pack your back the night before and define yourself as a fitness person. Hang out with people training and join them for a group exercise.

Connection Intelligence

In the right environment we also connect our brain to other brains. That is how we elevate our brains, minds and thinking. We do it in a network. All standing on the giants who came before us. And now as change are speeding up we also build on the giants that are climbing with us side by side. Some call it the Hive-Mind.

Go find a mastermind group or a creative hub or cluster and spend time with the brains there!

Elevation

To elevate your life, spend time with other people elevating their lives and yours. And do return the favor in kind by elevating them back.

I also want mention Theory.U – Leading from an Emerging Future by Otto Scharmer and Peter Senge, like Tess does. It is three principal ways to approach the world. Through Open MindOpen Heart and Open Will.

Open Mind

Having an Open Mind means you have a curious approach to the world. Being curious and asking a lot of interesting and dumb question opens up for creativity. The opposite of judging.

Open Heart

This is opening up and being vulnerable. To practice your compassion towards others and try to understand what you and they are feeling. To have an Open Heart towards the world.

Open Will

To have the courage to do what is right. And not give in, into the fear of the tribe ostracizing you. Be brave and have an Open Will.

And find a tribe that encourages all this behavior.

Leaning Forward & Learning To Fly

Leaning Forward & Learning To Fly

I choose to lean forward. In the way that if you don’t adjust your footing you will fall over. Constantly in motion. Chasing my dreams and the Future with curiosity!

“It is terrible to be satisfied. The world needs us to chase dreams.” – Illaoi

Helena asked: Where I am headed?
Sara reflected: We are not moving, but growing

Seth Godin has inspired me to Leap First.

I always imagined me as leaving my platform, suspended in the air, like in an platform arcade game from the 80ties. Jumping from that platform not knowing where to land. Just knowing I will either learn to fly, like do in my dreams or land on another platform that shows up in a timely fashion or will actually fly with a Flyboard 🙂

“Life is not balance. It is motion!” –Illaoi

Flyboard

To sum it up

We need a platform to jump from.

We need roots to grow from.

We need to be in constant motion not to fall over.

We need to dance with the future.

Then we are in balance!

I’m now on my way to the Crescendo of the Blog 100 challenge. The final Meetup in Stockholm. On a journey towards a goal. But I will never reach it. Be cause it’s now. And Right now I’m focusing on the journey.

Check out he pictures from the #Blogg100 2013 meetup.

Hey Tomorrow – Fuck you – And your friend Yesterday.
You can never catch me. Because I’m now, I’m now, I’m now, I’m now… Mindless Self Indulgence and LordSillion

As you travel trough time 2 things are always true:
It is always now
and
The now that was just moments ago is different from The Now – Now

This leaves you with 3 options:
1. Fight Change
2. Embrace Change
3. Architect Change

I choose door number 3. I choose to be an Architect of Change. Time’s own Agent. On a mission to change the Universe. But of course it’s all a lie. No one really wants change. The brains goal is to go down the most efficient path on running your systems. Everyone Wants Better, No One Wants Change.

So lets change things to the “Better”. Together

It’s about the Journey [London Real FTW]

I have written some post about my new-found love. The Podcast London Real. Their motto is: It’s about the Journey. They have some really great talks about what matters most in life with som really great thinkers like Jacque Fresco and Steven Pinker.

It’s not about how much money you make. It’s about what you do with every living moment of your life. The people you help. The thoughts you have and share. The experiences you create for yourself and others. The Life you lead.

Lets set out to lead others on our journey towards a “Better” Life on planet Earth. What else is there that matters?

Life is a Trap #Blogg100

#003 [III]
It’s a Trap … Life is a Trap … Let’s Get Caught Together 😉

How do you embrace life and the hand that you have been dealt? What plays can you make? Can you swap cards? Is it a team game? What Defines a Win?

What is important? [And why don’t we do it then?]

I have previously talk about that Life is a Game in my series The Great Masquerade. Hell it’s even my life motto. And I got to put it on my Game of Thrones House banner:

Life is a Game

Life is a Game

But if we where the clear-headed gamers that could analyse every move before we make them. And then make the most rationalized logical move to further our agenda and score. Then life would look very different indeed. Why can’t we do that? I say it’s because life is different kind of game.

Anyone can be an Agent of Change.
Every action changes something.
Choosing to do nothing is an active choice.
Jody Williams

Don’t grow up! It’s a Trap!

Yes Do Grow Up [Let’s get a Self-Transforming Mind]

Yes we do need to grow up. But not in the old boring way the old world think about it. But to get what Robert Kegan calls The Self-Transforming Mind. He gives an excellent talk about it on the RSA : The Further Reaches of Adult Development: Thoughts on the ‘Self-Transforming’ Mind.

Yes. At our current way in society only 1% of us, at the most, will reach this level around when they hit level 40. So herein lies a great challenge. We need to grow up. We need to grow up like never before to reach this level of mind and thinking.

As I see it, humanity’s greatest challenge in a globalized world can be put very simply: “How can we learn to live in each other’s backyards?” For the first time in the history of our species, a globalized world confronts us with a task for which a collection of Socialized Minds is inadequate. Such a complex challenge is unlikely to be met solely through better leadership, policies, or technology. I believe that it must be met through more complex thinking, and that responsibility is up to all of us. — Peter W. Pruyn

Life is trap in the sense that we can only go forward. Don’t cling on to the past and the olden ways of system thinking. Let’s embrace a whole new level of our minds — Lord Sillion

The Extended Mind [I need more focus]

elementary-duo

I have just seen the first episode of the new TV-Series Elementary with Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. It has promise and I just love good Sherlock Holmes stories. And now that modern Brain Science actually confirms that his way of thinking is accurate according to Maria Konnikova.

Sherlocks_mind

Listen to the RSA talk: The Scientific Method Of The Mind: What Sherlock Holmes can teach us about decision making with Maria Konnikova.

  • To solve problems take time and reflect over them. Go into the “Wilderness” alone
  • Doing 5 minutes of Mindful Mediation each day has scientific measured effect of increased cognitive ability.
  • Use your memory right with techniques of Chucking and Storytelling.
  • Focus at the Task at hand. Multitasking is a myth.

Now I just have to see season 2 of Sherlock too. The 3 parts of season 1 was brilliant 🙂

You wanna a Piece of … me mind?

I also found this today David Chalmers from TEDxSydney talking about  The Extended Mind.

Tomorrow I’m going to to “Speak my Mind” as I’m walking with a local politician here in Varberg. So far so many of my thoughts has been circulating around the mind, reality and the future here on planet Earth. And on Friday we are talking the Sustainable city here in Varberg too.

I will just have to trust my mind to bring all the puzzle-pieces together 🙂

Wanna piece of me? [I melt for no one!]

My M&M Mugs

My M&M Mugs

When I walk into M&M’s store on Times Square in New York and saw these mugs I just know I had 2 get them. What mugs or glasses we drink our brewages from has hug impact how we experiences the taste of them. As Dan Ariely has shown in his studies. When I saw the huge Red Round Mug in front of me. It instantly reminded me of my red mug I used to have as a child. I also love the round form with the thick walls that will keep my Tea or hot Chocolate warm for long while drinking. I was instantly sold to me. And it made such a great couple with the green one as well.

Gamer slang

There are also 2 great quotes inside the mugs. “Wanna piece of me?” and “I melt for no one!”. Today (11 am) I started my day where I left it early this morning (6 am). Meeting people and playing boardgames at the gaming convention Gothcon in Sweden. When we sit down and play games in the hallways and the classrooms at Hvitfeldtska High-school many people walk by or stay and watch the games. A few of them commented on the language we where using. We use a lot of gamer slang, friendly thrash talk, and a lot of Swinglish words.
“Iskallt” [Ice cold] comes to mind when someone pulls off a daring move.

It’s just how we gamers roll

Imperial

Imperial gaming

In a hallway I came across some people playing one of my all time favorite boardgames: Imperial. I noticed that they used the Nobish Investor card variant. So I asked if they have played allot. 3 where beginners a one guy had played it around 10 times. He didn’t even know that there where a better variant of the game designed for real gamers. So they where really glad when I explained how the game was supposed to play. I also noticed that there where no flags in the ocean areas. This was a ruled I remember that we also missed on our very first play thinking that you only got points for the land areas.

I watched them for a while pointing out moves and strategies each and every one could make. Then they cheered me on my merry way. It is always such a powerful feeling you get when hanging out with gamers and helping each other. That’s what I like the most of gaming convention like Gothcon or PAX. The Positive vibe you get from meeting most people here.

International TableTop Day

Today is also International TableTop Day all over the world. And that is so fitting here in Sweden with Gothcon and all. Speaking of Gothcon and mugs and all … Like many Conventions here in Sweden, Gothcon has a special mug printed every year that you buy too get free Tee and Coffee throughout the Convention. Being a Mug Lover myself, I of course have to collect them all.

God night everyone and play more games “Together” face to face drinking your favorite brewages from your favorite mugs 🙂

Have Fiero Moments

End of the Road

The Best session today was from Dr PO and Johan Lange. It’s about Earth Society version 3.0. See it blow in Swedish. We have come to the end of the old society. There are 3 inevitable ways we can change to a new one. Preferable The Networked Society. One thing is sure: We have come to the end of the road. We are are either learning how to fly or we are going to crash hard. The Change Scenarios are:

1. Catastrophe
2. Crusade
3. Small iterating steps

Theseus Day

Theseus Day is the day in Contimuum that started it all. With out spoiling it I can say that it triggers all kind thoughts around Fate, Destiny, Free Will and a deterministic Universe. If You haven’t seen the show I can really recommend it if you can find it. It’s a little bit cheesy and as usual in most Science Fiction there is very little talk about Social Media and The Network Society.

Anyhow. Referring to  the 3 scenarios above. There will come a day that you will instantly know that this is the day that a big change will begin to happen. What are your thoughts about it?

This summer the 3 of us will go to Almedalen and set up shop. There we will bring more light on the subject. Changing Sweden and the education of it’s new citizens.

Mia Törnblom on Personal Leadership [The 69 Eyes has found their confidence]

You wanna rock (rock)
Nothing’s gonna make you stop
And nothing’s gonna break you up
Everybody knows you’re lost
In the night time, honey
Lost boys

Tonight I have rocked. With The 69 Eyes. My favorite Rock band of them all. Finally they got the concert that they and we deserved here in Gothenburg. They rocked like they never done before. Maybe the have found their live confidence. They gave me a real Fiero moment!

Start with explaining a personal Why

Earlier today Mia Törnblom gave a very inspiring speech about finding you own personal confidence and motivation. She says the same thing as Simon Sinek. You have to start with explaining what each and every person stand to gain by doing something. Start explaining WHY.

Mia is also releasing a new book called “Du Säljer [You are Selling]. It almost the same as as the latest book from Daniel Pink, To Sell is Human. See my blog about Daniels talk here.

Inner strength

You must also find your Inner strength. It is like an account that you deposit positive energy. Then when when the going gets though you can withdraw the same energy. But you can not overdraw your account because that is when you start hurting yourself.

Mia Törnblom

Mia Törnblom – Fiero Moment

Reflection

You must also have time for Reflection. Do a reflection journal each day before you sleep. It’s kind like the Grateful exercise that I mention before.

Fiero Moment

You should celebrate each small victory each day with a Fiero Moment. Read some about Fiero here the way Jane McGonigal describes it. I got my Fiero moment during The 69 Eyes concert 🙂

Tweetup with United States of Tikka

Before the 69 Eyes concert, I organised  a Tweepup. There a I had a very interesting conversation about life and The Future with Katarina “United States of” Tikka @ustikka. See you at WebCoast next weekend.

Happiness – Willpower – Mediation [Do it Harder, faster and more intelligently]

I have been participating in Kelly McGonigal’s online course 28 days Boost your willpower. Today I came across this TED talk by Shawn Achor: The happy secret to better work thanks to @molbimien in here blog. So his advice in the end correlates very much with Kelly’s teaching and others that researches in happiness.

Do Random acts of kindness - Shawn Achor

Do Random acts of kindness – Shawn Achor

Harder, faster and more intelligently

Here is 5 tips from Shawn Achor on how to be happier and thus becoming more productive.

  • 3 things you are grateful of today. 20 days in a row
  • Journaling – Blogging
  • Exercise
  • Mindful Mediation
  • Random acts of kindness

3 things you are grateful of today. 20 days in a row

Write down 3 things each day that you where grateful of. This is an exercise that I have done before after reading of it in Martin Seligman’s book Flourish. I will restart doing it “Today”. As their is no tomorrow. It’s always Today, Today and Today.

Journaling – Blogging

Writing down your ideas and hunches helps the brain thinking about them. As I discussed in my earlier episode #066 [LXVI] Chance favors the connected mind [Keep on blogging] blogging or making notes on a daily basis helps. Blog away! Find all tips under Journaling.

Exercise

Daily Exercise keep your thinking engine and happiness spinning on top. When sitting down all day I recommend getting up for a short exercise ever 4 hour like running up some stairs. Some people but not all have the genes that benefits from doing 3 minutes extremely high intensity taring [HIT] for 3 minutes.  See also my blogposts: Dance and Run in Stairs.

Mindful Mediation

Want more willpower and focus? Just doing a 5 minute Mindful meditation a day has a scientific proven effect of boosting your mind and willpower. Use the technique described below.

Random acts of kindness
Doing random acts of Kindness will make you feel better as well as making the receiver more likely to pay it forward. Simon Sinek explains this very well in his speech here: #088 [LXXXVIII] I want you to become a better version of you.

More or less?

According to Barry Schwarts we must also limit the number of choice we make. So that we don’t get stuck in Analysis Paralysis. AP [Analysis Paralysis] is something that all we Boardgamers are very familiar with. Games are just that. Simulation of choice and consequence. I for one, think that there are Free Will in games as well as in life. We must not get stuck on our choices. And even if we regret our choices. We must learn that like in a game we can’t redo our choices. Life is Permanent.

“Regret does not remind us we did badly. It remind us we could do better.” — Kathyrn Schulz

A Five-Minute Meditation

This is from Kelly McGonigal’s online course 28 days Boost your willpower.

Whenever you’re trying to make a change in your life, a daily meditation practice can be a positive ally. But that doesn’t mean you have to go buy a cushion, sign up for training, or dedicate 45 minutes each day to some strict, idealized discipline. Keep it easy, and keep it light. You can reap serious benefits from this simple, five-minute practice:

1. Sit still and stay put. You don’t have to be on a cushion or mat; just find a spot where you can sit comfortably for five minutes.

2. Turn your attention to the breath. For a minute or two, think to yourself “inhale” with every inhalation, “exhale” with every exhalation.

3. Notice how it feels to breathe, and feel the mind wander. After a minute or two, drop the labels, and just notice how it feels in the body to breathe. You might feel it in the nose, in the belly, or in the throat. If your mind wanders—which it will!—just keep calm and return to the sensation of the breath.

That’s it. This micro-meditation is an incredibly powerful willpower booster—the practice of returning attention again and again to the breath kicks the prefrontal cortex (the decision-making center of the brain) into high gear and quiets the stress and craving centers of your brain. Every time you bring your attention away from a wandering thought and back to the breath, you strengthen self-awareness and boost self-control.

Why we Sin and Lie #Blogg100

#080 [LXXX]
We are all Sinners and Liars

Well the Pope is right. We are all sinners.

What would make us to cheat less?

According to Dan Ariely and his research we lie all the time. In fact, as I said before. We can never tell the truth. Just a mere Truthy Tale. But what would make want to tell a story as truth worthy as possible? What would make us  to cheat less?

Anything that reminds of our moral code. Like reciting the ten commandments. Religion got a hang of this many thousands of years ago. So when ever we get put in a position to make a decision where we could cheat and lie we must be reminded of something that stands for our morality.

Yo can see or listen to his latest talk before the RSA: Free beer: The truth about dishonesty. Or see the even shorter RSA Animate version. (Both are found at the bottom.)

If you want more you can Listen to or read his latest book The (Honest) Truth about Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone – Especially Ourselves.

What increase and decrease honesty

What increase and decrease honesty

What can The Borgias teach us?

Sinners or Saints?

Sinners or Saints?

Another Pope sinner of rank is Rodrigo Lanzol Borgia masterfully portrayed by Jeremy Irons in the TV-Series The Borgias. Power corrupts and we must recognize that our most powerful decision makers are in dire need of moral guidance.

Kick-Ass Obama

AS I finish this up I’m listening to Obama doing The State of the Union. I’m happy to hear that he intends to spend more in Science and Research. Especially to stop Climate Change. More about this later in the week.
