Design For Engagement

Here it is. My take on making comprehensive overview of what to think about when designing an event or an activity of any kind. Things to think about is who is it for and why should they care about doing it? Look what others have designed before you and steal the best parts and experiment with them.

1. Build a story that it is easy to share into the activity you are designing!

2. Use Design Thinking! Who is your audience?

3. Onboarding and sacrifice are things to consider.

4. Find your ambassadors and elevate them!

5. Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

6. Build content and a community around your event and prolong the experience!

Make things full with Flow, Fun, Friends and Meaning [Design For Engagement]

When designing any kind of activity, game, competition, puzzle, event, learning, system or challenge it’s good to have in mind the basic fundamentals of what motivates and triggers people to join in or take action. This is also great advice when doing crowdfunding events on sites like Kickstarter.

The activity can be learning a skill or a trade. All things we do is practice and leaning in some way towards some form improvement or mastery. When things are “Just For Fun”, it’s mostly then we are learning the fastest. Getting into “Flow” is usually the most effective way of learning something or to be the most productive in that activity. Some of the thinking here I have borrowed directly from Amy Jo Kim’s lecture mostly about gaming. I think it can be applied to most human activities. I also focus mainly on the positive motivations. Sure there are many strong negative feelings that drives change and motivation like fear, hate, revenge. But I don’t go to into how to design for them here. Instead I try to focus what makes things fly.

If you think something is missing or needs to be changed just comment below or contact me 🙂

Lets do better design thinking when we design our activities.

Triggers of The Element
[Cognitive – Athletic – Competition – Cooperation – Exploration – Expression- Collecting]

There are 6 elements in an activity that can be combined to trigger different kind of things in people: Cognitive Challenge, Athletic ChallengeCompetitive, Cooperation, Exploration, Expression. The users, combatant, player and adventurer is just not one style but a combination of these. Get to know your different user styles of the activity. Find out what types they are and how to design for them.

There is also the bonus category of Collecting

1 Cognitive Challenge

Many games – puzzles and activities revolve around a cognitive challenge that we can solve in some kind. Without this challenge many of feel that a challenge becomes dull rather shortly. It is all about hitting that sweet-spot of Flow where the challenge is just hard enough.

2 Athletic & Agility Challenge

Just as many activities contains challenges for the brain many other contains physical challenges for the muscles in some way. Be it agility, endurance, strength, or athletic ability. Almost all sports fall in the category and triggers us in so many ways. But there are also lots of other activities that we do just for fun or the challenge of intrinsic mastery. Here is also the sweet-spot of Flow somthing thats makes the activity engaging.

3 Competition

Many of us trigger by the need to compete and measure us against each other. Be it the sole competitor or a whole team against each other. This is a basic human need. The need to seem strong in front the tribe. And to seem extra useful for the Tribe. This usually followed by increased status, fame and attractiveness in the fair sex.

Competitions, Sports, Games and different forms of Challenges can been used to trigger this part of us.

4 Cooperation & Social

Humanities greatest feast is the ability to co-operate towards a common goal. A lone human had little chance of survival in the past. A great tribe of a 100 individuals could solve almost anything. We have it built into our DNA to work together and get rewarded for it on many levels. Jonathan Haidt explains this so well.

It feels great giving and helping others without the need for reciprocity. It is what binds tribes together.

Some people just like to play games as it is an activity we do together with other people. We like to do social activities.

5 Exploration

We humans are also explorers by nature. Not all, but some of us get the sudden urge to seek out new unknown territory to wander in. The lust for exploration is very strong and can take form in many shapes. This is very powerfully portrayed in the this epic clip narrated by Carl Sagan: Wanderers.

Activities that includes Adventure, Mystique and Puzzles Solving are all good ways to “explore” this drive in human nature.

6 Expression

One of our most unique traits is the ability and need to express ourselves. From how we look, dress and garnish our body to external expression through art and stories. The need to both be unique, and fit in, in the tribe at the same time. To put our twist on ourselves. And also the need to create, tinker, improve and “hack” things.

Radical Self-Expression is also part of one the 10 principles of Burning Man.

Making Things Magic!

Of course there are many more needs and desires that drive us humans like love, lust, belonging, righteousness, rebellion, fear, hate, revenge and need for the adrenaline rush. Still, these 6 big is a great way to start when designing an activity. Just focusing on one of them works great. Or combining them for a complex activity that attracts different people for different reasons works even gretater. Especial if it’s an activity done together with others.

With this is in mind, we can easier understand how to make an event more magic.

7 Harvesting – Collecting & Hoarding

There is also another aspect we trigger when we play games. Is has to do mostly with gathering side of Hunter gathering, that later lead to many of us being able to farm and harvest as a way of living. It’s both sowing things, and help them grow, and at last harvesting them.

We also like to collecting things. And when have things we like to sort and arrange them in different ways too. We get a kick out of finding that rare bush of berries or that occasional lagoon full of oysters. This is easily transferable into an activity or game of any kind where we can collect things and hunt down rare objects.

It’s okay to be hoarder 😉

Intrinsic Motivations and PERMA

When we know what kind of activity to make we can then increase the level of engagement people feel when doing it. There are many models and names for the intrinsic motivations we have. I chose to incorporate them into Martin Seligmans’s and Jane McGonigal’s PERMA model. In it we divide out internal motivations into 5 categories. One that can arguably be said is missing is the reward we feel during and after any physical performance. And ultimately like I do, the ability to put oneself into trance and triggering the Hive-Switch in the brain. Still here we go. Put more PERMA into your design:

P – Positive Emotions – We all like experiencing positive emotions like urgent optimismjoy, peace, gratitude, satisfaction, trust, pride, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, or love. These emotions move us along when triggering the other forms of motivations. Arguably we can put the feelings we feel when sexually aroused or the rush we feel when dancing with danger here too.

E – Engagement (or flow) – When a situation, task, or project are in the sweet-spot between our current skill level and the difficulty of the activity we often experience a state of flow. We lose track of time & space around us. We becomes totally engulfed in the activity at hand. The ability for a person or a whole team to themselves into flow has been measured to be the largest contributor to the success of any endeavour. This is linked to the oh so popular concept of following ones passion. This is the right path towards mastery.

R – Relationships – The need for belonging in a social context is very strong. We all want to be seen, heard and acknowledged within the tribe. It’s also more important to been known for contributing to the tribe than actually doing it without any recognition.

Being social with others is at the core of what it is to being human. When having good relationships with others, is when are at our best. Co-operation and friendly competition brings out the best in us. Make the user interact with others in the system or have them sharing about content in the system outside it.

M – Meaning – Meaning comes from creating a purposeful narrative about our lives. A story where we are part in something bigger than our-self. We will often sacralize something in the group that brings meaning to us. Finding ones purpose in life can be a powerful thing indeed. Humans have it in them seek meaning and spirituality. It’s what we do. Here is great clip about Burning Man explaining it all.

Designing activities with a greater purpose and a greater vision behind them is the way to go. So many things and leaders in our society, act without a clear vision where they are taking us.

A – Accomplishments – We often seek Mastery in some form. And completing our goals and following our core values. Or we can just get good feedback and rewards from an activity we are carrying out, which also give great satisfaction. Enhance the progress the user is making by giving them great feedback.

Integrate feedback into the activity loop of the current activity. We just love checking things of our to-do list. Or getting the great feeling of completing or launching things on a grander scale. When we down that boss in an epic game. Throw your arms in the air for that great Fiero moment.

What humanity desperately need right now is a vision where we can go as a species – #BurningMan

Another way and model that I also like is the one called the 4Ps by Storyarchitects with People – Purpose – Passion – Pleasure developed by Jasmine Idun Lyman. You can probably see where this model overlaps with the one above.

People

People – Purpose – Passion – Pleasure developed by Jasmine Idun Lyman

Flow – Mastery and Passion

On of the most talked about thing now is the notion that you should find and follow your passion. This is both true or as Tai Lopez calls it: Accurate. It’s all about design an activity with life-cycle aspect in mind. Start with Onboarding for the Newbie like Amy Jo Kim says. Then makes sure there are different challenges with increasing difficulty so that a participant can easily get into flow depending on their skill level. Not all event should have all skill levels depending on what type of activity it is. Over time a well design activity develops passion in the participant as they increase their skill level on their journey.

Tim Ferriss has a new TV show out called The Tim Ferriss Experiment where he tries to master 13 different challenging skills in just 5 days. In order to do this he needs apply a very precise set of points to stay in flow and take the quickest route towards the path of mastery. He shows us that it is possible to learn a skill very fast with the right and best teachers, science, technique, motivation, attitude and design thinking.

Stories – Ambassadors – Choice – Sacrifice – VIP – Adrenaline Rush – Prolonging

Stories
All great activities and products have an inbuilt story. One that we can tell our self while doing it. A kind of internal Self-Narration. And another that we can tell others and share before, during and after an activity. Here it helps designing content and context around the activity that can be shared and easily internalized.

We are basically a storytelling ape with a big brain that is excellent in recognising, enjoying and telling stories.

Sacrifice and Pain
Some activities also benefits if there is some kind of sacrifice, hardship and pain built into them. It scares some people away and attract others. Physical challenges and some competitions often use this to great benefit. The benefits of doing something hard and painful are often enjoyed after the event. When the pain is forgotten and all we have left is a good story. Doing hard stuff together with others and sharing the pain also brings people closer together and builds bonds.

It also makes people much more emotionally invested in the event. Which in turn makes for better long term commitment and creates excellent ambassadors.

Try to sell the story people can tell when they are part if an exclusive tribe that have mastered the challenge.

Scarcity and VIP
We all like to be VIP och part of some exclusive tribe sometimes. By making an activity only available to a selected few who either cued for the event or paid extra to get extra treatments and perks is great way to increase the overall attractiveness of the event. This is used with great success in crowdfunding activities with different perk levels. Here scarcity both in time and in the number of available slots serves a way to make people sign up faster.

Give people the ability to feel or dream about the status and exclusiveness that a special offer or VIP treatment brings.

Ambassadors
Any event or activity also needs great Ambassadors to flourish. Try to find people who are willing to invest time and energy into it. Or the people who are already doing it. The can be in it for some of the different reasons mentioned above. Interact with them. Give them VIP treatment. Ask them how you can improve the experience. Study them. Give them options to tell your story to more people.

Find your ambassadors and elevate them!

Feel the Rush
Some activities is all about the adrenaline or rush we can feel when doing something exciting and dangerous. Some people become adrenaline junkies and are always looking for more ways to experience more rushes. All things that get the human mind rushing is alluring.

How can you make your activity more exciting?

Choice and Autonomy
People like making choices. This makes us feel autonomous. It’s just that we are different when we think about what rules we want to follow when making choices and forming habits. Gretchen Rubin divides us into 4 different type of people when adopting new habits: Obligers, Questioners, Upholders and Rebels. Of course many of us like the excitement and angst when choosing between different options.

Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

Prolong and improve the experience
If you are dealing with a event or happening in any way the is ways to prolong and extend the experience. Build up the campaign with onboarding and signaling. Like in the Tesla Launch.

Use social media and #hashtags to get people talking and interacting both with you and other fans long before the event. During the event get people talking using #Hashtags and other tools. make them livestream the event with their smartphones and do use a professional livestreaming team as well. After the event encourage people to share their experience with all kinds of media like videos, photos, blogs, podcasts, forums and Facebook groups.

Build content and a community around your event!

Extra Bonus Update!!!

You won’t believe what happened next! [6 Signs You Are A Sharer]

As with any great activity it’s helps get momentum if people tell other people about it. We now live in a time when it’s not only mass media who gets to decide what gets attention and not. We humans have always shared stuff through language. It’s what we do. We have always done it on small limited scale within our tribe. It has just got a whole lot easier and scalable to share stuff. Then what do we share?

According to Jonathan Berger who has done som research on the subject it all boils down to six categories on why we share stuff. Not just online but we still share most of it mouth to mouth.

Social Currency — We share things that make us look good
Triggers — Top of mind, tip of tongue
Emotion — When we care, we share
Public — Built to show, built to grow
Practical Value — News you can use
Stories — Information travels under the guise of idle chatter

Build a story that it is easy to share into the activity you are designing.

That way you will get more attention to it. Unless you want to keep it a secret 😉

Think Big! Be Nice! Have Bold Visions of the Future!

I have been listing to 3 very inspiring women. Frida BoisenElaine EksvärdDarja Isaksson. It was all under the combined meet-up of IT-Solutions Expo and HR Summit Väst. They all gave 3 different views on the society, that is toppling the old industrialised economy. It’s called The Connection Economy. In a way it has always been about who you knew in the old society too. The difference was that it was only available to a selected few, who was in the right circles and that did know who to make friends with. Now with the power of the digital dimension and an emerging number of people who has studied both old and modern knowledge and science, there is paradigm shift already on the way.

So in honor of the 2015 International Women’s Day  theme “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” I give you:

@fridaboisen [Frida Boisen] – Social Ninja – Be Nice

Frida gives a very interesting and funny talk about her experience as Editor-in-chief at GT. She gives us 10 things about then going online.

Is Viral important? Can we only reach impact if we go viral? Both yes and no. Viral is important to get reach. On the other hand getting real connection with people one on one is now more possible, quicker and easier than ever before. It all depends on your message and your agenda.

The one thing to think about: Use your comedic talent. On the web and in presentation and talks. Humor always has a way to get into your heart. And satire has proven again and again through the ages to be a very effective tool to put the spotlight on anything fishy in society.

Frida Boisen

Frida Boisen –  What is in your heart?

Ask yourself: What is in your heart?

1. Spread love not hate online
Touch someone. Reach out. Be honest and real. All people have a heart to get through to.

2. Tell it first
In a way we humans always look to someone who is the fastest to deliver important news.

3. Tell it best
If you are not first to say something then say it better

4. Like and share
Be generous. All of us likes kindness
Use congratulations [Grattiseffekten]. We all know how good it feels to be flooded with kind words on our birthday or another important day on Facebook.

5. Connect first
Show someone you care about them. Tell them what you feel. Be then one who reaches out and shows initiative.

6. Join in on popular conversations and Hashtags
Be where the heat is.

7. Ping people.
Lift them up. Don’t gossip about them. Everyone likes be thought about in a good way.

8. Find your audience
Find your tribe. The Long Tail is becoming true. If Your trying to please everyone you will end up pleasing no one.

9. Replay back
Follow back. Don’t feed the trolls. Be active in constructive conversations.

10. Look after your brand
Be positive. Talk about your successes.

We must never accept online-hatred and Toxicness. We must talk about what Code of Conduct we use both online and in the flesh. It’s never okay do harm to one another.

Laugh at the trolls
1. Start a fire. Find your values. Talk to the heart.
2. Be top of mind. Follow! Like! Be generous, be everywhere.
3. Chose a small arena. Use micro targeting. Visit a Café.

Be bold. Be Daring. Be Vulnerable
Think Big. Tell Stories. Share Your Vision.
It’s Your Turn!

@ElaineEksvard [Elaine Eksvärd] – Rhetoric Ninja – Train Your Communication Skills

Elaine has so much to say on how we communicate in todays society. I’ll sum up below some of her important points.

Use the first 90 seconds of any encounter to define and make sure everyone you meet get the right picture of you and not a internal one filled with clichés and preconceptions. This is especially important for people like me who have chosen to wear my residual self image full out in the flesh of “The Matrix”.

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd – Connect to people

Communication is a skill and muscle that you must train every day.

Think about how you sound and what tonality you are using.

What is your posture and what body language are you using. If you don’t know, find out.

When someone are trying to portray their thoughts and opinions as facts there is an easy way to disarm them. Just say: Oh, that’s how you are felling? [Jasså, så känner du?] 🙂

Words and communication are power and we all need/want more influence (power).
So keep practicing your skills.

Get more social power and influence!

1. You have more power.
2. You can get more power.
3. Much More!

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Tonight I have been to a meetup with some fellow entrepreneurs that all joined up for a course in running your own business last fall in Varberg, Sweden. We all met up to share our stories and to do some pitching. We also talked about how we should sell ourself, our products and our services. It was all led by the awesome Jannike and Lovisa, who both radiate some much positive energy where ever they go.

Prep [Be Prepared]

When ever you are going to meet someone do your homework before you meet them. Read up on who they are and what they are passionate about. Show them that you are interested in who they are and what they do. Sincerely.

It’s curios that the knowledge of How To Win Fiends And Influence People are still not common knowledge and taught to every child, despite that is almost 80 years ago the Dale Carnage came out with his famous book and that modern science has come so far as to how to build genuine connection between people.

Pitch [Pitch Black or How To Convey Any Message]

We all need to pitch. We need to pitch our ideas to friends and family. We need to pitch our business proposal to potential clients and investors. It can be a short elevator pitch of 20 to 30 seconds. It can be in the more prepared format that some did tonight with a Powerpoint presentation of 7 slides with 30 seconds speaking time each slide totaling 3 min 30 sec. Or it can be longer really prepared pitch running 15-20 minutes with months of research and work behind it. Like the ones that Oren Klaff does.

pitch-anything-2

The Croc Brain [The Lizard Brain – The Resistance]

If we want to pitch anything we must first get our words, pictures and story past the what Oren Klaff calls the Croc Brain and Seth Godin calls the Lizard Brain. We do that by telling an emotional story that resonates with the receiver. Oren Klaff, who is a professional pitcher of the biggest ideas and deals there is, explains this well in his book: Pitch Anything. Or to just get the best part see or listen to this talk between Oren and Chase Jarvis. Even if his cases are bit extreme and most the time a kind of competitive pitching between people who are trying to “win” at any cost, you can still apply most of his thinking to your everyday pitching 🙂

Pepp [And Boost each other]

Then we have what Seth Godin calls the Connection Economy. This is a very deep topic. I sum it up in my blog post. in short it’s about all this things: Trust, Permission, Remarkability, Leadership, Stories that spread, Connection, Compassion, and Humility. We all want to be noticed and feel important. So it’s all about making your customers, your suppliers and your coworkers feel special. We all need to connect more. We also should seek out people who make us feel good and stay away from toxic people who drag us down. It’s what  true what Scott Dinsmore is always talking about in his Live Your Legend Local concept.

“The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around the people already doing them” – Scott Dinsmore

In honor of that I’m hosting meetups where the main point is to meet up, share our thoughts, ideas and dreams of the future. To pep each other and to hold one another accountable for the plans we all make. Do join us for the next one on February 8th in Varberg. Or do find one in of the other 44 countries all over the world hosting one.

Selling [Don’t Sell, Make A Connection Instead]

We are all in sales now like Daniel Pink says in his book. But sales does not mean what it used to mean. It’s now more than ever to build a connection with your customer and give them what they need.

And don’t try to please everyone or make a product that everyone will want. Because if you try to do this, you will end up with a service or product that no one needs or wants.

Go Make A Ruckus!

The reason I’m so exited about all this is because they I have just finished Seth Godin’s latest audiobook in a form of a 2 hour compilation from his seminars called Leap First.

What am I Making Then?

I’m finally narrowing down what my art is and what I want to spend my time doing.

I will help people and companies to navigate the connection economy. I will offer to make speeches and workshops on how to best flourish in this modern society. I will help develop ideas, visions and strategies for this networked society.

I will create places and events where people can meet and share knowledge and be creative.

I will give the young so-called Hacker-clubs and Hackathons for us more “adult”.

I want everybody to have a curious mind about the future. And I want to teach people how to become more creative and aware  themself and their environment. That is was my first handbook is about.

You need people to subscribe to your ideas.

The Nation State Boardgame

How do we get people thinking about how we design our world and society? What if you could simulate and redo your choices everyday? Is the society you see around you the result of som serious systems thinking? And, if not, then why not? Can we make the world like a boardgame? And can we use games to make people act out their inner desires to build an empire without them damaging our only world in the process?

Are You A Civilisation Builder? [Simulating Society Building]

Being a politician and playing the game called “The Nation State” is just like when I play any Civilization boardgame or Logistics boardgame except for one big difference. I can redo my choices every time I play my game.

Clash of Cultures the Civilization Boardgame

Clash of Cultures the Civilization Boardgame

In my games there are always many schools, strategies and tactics you can use to build a great nation or economic engine. You can experiment and see what works from game to game. In real life it’s a bit more complicated. The biggest problem is that each individual has their own life at stake for the choices they make. Another one is that changing the system can’t be done in a couple of hours and then back again.

AncientWorlds

Ancient Worlds – Building a Civiliztion through Colonialism

This all comes down to a very slow and inflexible system where no one wants to innovate and try new stuff.

My idea is that all decision makers should play more boardgames where they run a Nation State where they are exposed to a myriad of other options into how to run a society. Wouldn’t it we great if everyone worked together to build a better society instead of just forwarding their own personal agenda. What is your idea on how to make a better society? Is the Networked Society changing all this? Will transparency and openness shine a light on what the people in power really are doing? Can we help them in some way?

Increase Your Cognitive Thinking [Design The World Around You]

Me, myself, love the both social and cognitive exercise, that playing modern designer boardgame is. Have you tried it? And have you then reflected on what systems the boardgame are simulating?

Bring your brain out of its default power saving mode (System 1),  by doing everything on routine, and instead into the creative curious high energy mode of learning new stuff every day (System 2) – Michael Sillion

We can do this. Try to se the world and things happening around you in new light each day. What is happening and why? Has someone deliberately designed the system or is just and emerging effect of other small steps and choices?

Busande Barn

“Every school should be like Disneyland“.

Busa mera! [Live Long and Prosper!]

Live Long and Prosper!

Busa med dina och andras Barn!
Busa med dig själv!
Busa mera!
Lev längre!
Och Blomstra!

Prime Your Brain

Visions of The Future [Part 2 of 3]

We all need visions for the future. By playing a simple trick on your brain you can “Prime” it to look out for events that will seem like serendipity to you. And since your brain can’t separate fact from fiction. You can tell stories to your brain and it will try to make them “True” 🙂
This is Part 2 of 3 about Visions of The Future.

“It doesn’t matter what you pick. It just matters that you pick. The reason people don’t wanna pick is, because then they have to claim it. You pick that? You didn’t pick this? Better to pick nothing.”
Seth Godin, #GoodLifeProject

Use Storytelling [It’s the only way to remember anything]

Jenny Åkerman

Jenny Åkerman – Talking Brain Science

I have been on an interesting seminar in Gothenburg. We started out early with Jenny Åkerman giving a free public speaking about how we can use the brain to achieve what we want. She is a Swedish Brain Scientist who gave a very entertaining speech about the brain. She goes briefly into what I talked about before. That the brain stores everything as stories. It can not tell apart fact from fiction. You know when you dream and all the crazy stuff seems so real. Even flying that I do from time to time feels so normal in your dreams. I also met a new good friend on the train up and recommended the book “The Storytelling Animal” by Jonathan Gotschall to him. This is one of the best books that I have listened to. It gives you great insight into how your storytelling organ inside your skull works. Jenny mentions how use simple bizarre story to remember everything on a shopping list.

The Brain stores everything as Stories – WE just need to help it by telling better stories

A story like this can’t be ordinary for the brain to remember it. The brain remembers all new stories it are exposed to. It’s what the brain are made for. It’s what the brain lives for.

Can you be Leonardo Da Vinci? [Seven steps on the road towards an awesome mind]

Can you be anything like Leonardo Da Vinci? Jenny Talks about the myths and truths of using both sides of the brain. We should use as many centers in the brain at the same time when doing everything. We may not be as genius as Leonard but here are 7 steps that will take you closer to becoming great. They can be found in my blog: How can you be a modern Ninja. and in the audio-stream from SXSW: Design Like Da Vinci: Leonardo’s Sketching Lessons.

7 Steps to Everyday Genius

1. Be curious. You should be constantly learning new stuff.
2. Test knowledge. Learn from your mistakes.
3. Improve your own experience. Make it multi-sensory.
4. Embrace ambiguity, paradox and uncertainty
5. Whole-brain thinking (science / art, logic / emotion)
6. Know the physical world (grace, dexterity, fitness)
7. Use system-thinking. See interconnections

Step out of your Comfort-Zone [That’s when Creativity and Courage happens]

Jenny spins it further by saying that:

“All new knowledge and progress is preceded by confusion” — Jenny Åkersson

It is when the brain is confused that it steps out of its comfort-zone and try solve things in a different way that it is used to. The Brain actually likes being confused. It feels good. Think about that the next time you feel confused. This is what Peter Sengie calls Creative Tension.
The gap between vision and the current reality is called the Creative Tension. This is the space on with the magic of creativity happen.

You must be willing to leave current reality. Step out of your comfort zone towards an unknown future. A future only visualized in a dream. You must expose your art to others. Thus becoming vulnerable. Only then does creativity and empathy happen. Both Brené Brown and Seth Godin explains this well 🙂

See my blog-post on empathy: The Way of Empathy [The Beast with 2 Hearts]

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

Brené Brown on Vulnerability and Courage

In all her 12 years of research Brené Brown can not find a single example of Courage, Spiritual courage, Moral courage or Leadership courage, when someone didn’t first step out of their comfort zone and became vulnerable.

Have the courage to do what is possible. Just not convenient.

Prime Your Brain [Tell your story to your brain]

Like Jason Silva says: “You can Prime Your Brain towards a goal you want to reach”. As your brain can’t separate fact from fiction: Everything that you or someone else tell your brain makes sense. Because the Brain even can’t tell the difference between someone else talking to it or you doing the talking yourself.

Your brain is a goal achieving machine. Your subconscious is hard at work on achieving your visions and dreams of the future. So start priming your own brain, by telling your brain what visions of the future it should have in mind.

Serendipity is just that. Filling your mind with patterns on your path. To be on the lookout for. And then your subconscious mind will be on constant watch for these patterns and make them happen. So here is what you can do:

1. Start by thinking about where you are a year from now.
2. Start backtracking ever step that you took to get there. Think about the big events on the way.
3. Now think about the first step you took a year ago.
4. Start Walking, Running, Jumping, Climbing and Flying to get there!

Look to the Moon

Look To The Moon – Run To The Hills

It’s Prime Time! [Look To The Moon & The Stars]

Who are  you a year from Now? Should we really ask questions like this? I think we must! We should not dwell on the past. But we should revisit it from time to time in order see the contrast to our present. Most of us should focus on the now. To keep things moving and operating. But some of us must make it our mission to study the past. And others must fantasize about the future and create stunning Science Fiction to inspire us all. We need all these skills.

The Past like the future does not really exist. They are both fantasies created in our minds. The Future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our minds in order to help shape the world we want to live in.
The Past unlike The Future has actually happened. The Past, as represented in our mind, is a mental simulation too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened. Most of us believe our memory is filled with reliable info we can access at will. Not so. But memory isn’t an outright fiction. It is merely a fictionalization of what took place. Memory is an unreliable self-serving historian. It’s there to help us make decisions that help us along for the bumpy ride that reality is.

Jonathan Gottschall from The Storytelling Animal

But even people who focus on the present benefits from priming their brain in some way. Because we need a larger goal for our modern society than Consumerism. Something to aspire to. And as we all need to be part of this vision, we all need some connectedness and some priming with the environment around us. We are not just the Animal who collects food or money on a daily basis. We are something more. And we can become so much more. We can put a Dent in the Universe!

We all need to look to the stars! Together! — Lord Sillion

The Kamiwaza Way [I Want to be a Godlike Ninja Futurist]

We are Godlike says Seth Godin. What Godlike Powers will I use in my future? What skills have I? What do have to learn, fail with and finally Master? Will I become Master – Sensei – Ninja?

[008]
Master – Sensei – Ninja [Who Am I?]

This is part 4 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

I have spent the last year Respeccing my Talents. Just like you do in World of WarCarft. I have always figured that I was some form of visionary and philosopher. So I decided to respec my skills. It has been a very interesting journey so far. I have challenging myself to learn something new every day. From the beginning I didn’t know what to become or who I wanted to be. But the more I learned and blogged about, I was starting to connect the dots. My vision for the future was becoming clearer. So when I finally heard the 2 podcast episodes from London Real with the 2 Futurists Jason Silva and Melissa Sterry, I finally struck home. I too want to be some kind of Futurist. So when I went to embroider a T-Shirt to wear in Almedalen I had to come up with a title to call myself. Then Holistic Thinking Ninja just popped into my head. So what is that? Bear with me and find out below.

“If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” — Wiseman, Sucker Punch

So I will now draw a full circle on these 3 words: Master – Sensei – Ninja. They fit into my reasoning in the story below about Wolverine, Wisdom from League of Legends and becoming Godlike [Kamiwaza] that Seth Godin speaks of. Read on.

“For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never know” — Wiseman, Sucker Punch

Wukong - The Monkey King -- Adapt to all situations - Bring me a real challenge

Wukong – The Monkey King — Adapt to all situations – Bring me a real challenge

The Wolverine [SNKT]

How many of you are fans of the Comic Superhero Wolverine? And if you are, have you ever been standing in front of the mirror going SNKT while extending your hands? Yes? I have. I still do it from time to time 😉

So obviously I have been to the Movies watching The Wolverine. It’s not a great movie but it’s the best Wolverine movie we have to date and Hugh Jackman is just born to play Logan. Although he is not exactly as in the comic you can’t help falling in love with him. He’s the classic unwilling hero. Because he must. To bad the Ninjas don’t put up a fight. This could have been as cool as the comic it is based on from 1982 by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. Ninjas should be cooler than that.

Ninjas are Awesome!

So what could be done better with this movie? Check out ComicBookGirl19: 10 Things about The Wolverine! Like she says in nr. 10. What is the Moral of the Story? Yes. The Moral of this story as well as in all the other big movies summer is completely missing. Let’s Make Better Art!

Wolverine and Ninjas of the Hand

Wolverine and Ninjas of the Hand

The Ninja, The Samurai and The Beast [Learning and Mastery]

Wolverine is full of Ninjas, Samurais and one Beast. Although they are Japanese, they all have 3 Chinese inspired counterpart heroes in League Of Legends. The 3 matching champions that I try to master are Lee Sin, Master Yi and Wukong. They all come with their own wisdom to share on mastery.

“Master yourself, master the enemy.” — Lee Sin, Play

“A True Master is an Eternal Student” — Master Yi, Play

“Every Mistake is a Lesson – Adapt to all situations – Bring me a real challenge” — Wukong, Master Yi’s apprentice, Play

Master Yi

Master Yi – A True Master is an Eternal Student

Well maybe Wukong isn’t a beast. But he has a close place in my heart. He is based on the old Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King who I was very fascinated with as a child. Because as it was one of the few animated films I saw that wasn’t Disney and it was full with wonder, magic and fighting. And awesome Chinese music. It still resonates within me today. It was one piece of Storytelling that captured my imagination. Who made me think that there is different kind of magic in the world if you let it.

Sun Wukong – The Monkey King

Be Brave and Be Bold [Fly out on a Kamiwaza path]

The bravery of the Monkey King as he stands up against and challenge the gods draws some parallels the latest book by Seth Godin that I am “reading” [Listening] to right now: “The Icarus Deception“. In it he talks about the new connected networked society. And why we must become Artists. Art is what happens in the connection between people. There must be a receiver for there to be art.

Art is also when we do something that is our own. When we do something that is not safe and outside our safety zone. As Brené Brown so elegantly put it, when we become Vulnerable. It’s then the Magic happens. Creativity only happens when we are willing to put ourselves at the line. Don’t copy or follow others on their safe trodden path. What is the worst that can happen? Be willing to risk a little and carve out your own path. That is why we must also be bold. Don’t fly to low to the sea. Fly high! As we are in no way in any danger of coming to close to the sun as Icarus did.

As Wukong challenges the gods, he also displays Godlike skills and powers. We must also strive to be Godlike:

Myths are ancient truths about what we are capable of. Our gods are oh so human. The deities we create are allot like us at our best — Seth Godin

Superman. Thor. Moses. Athena. George Gershwin. Thomas Edison — they each represent part of what it is to be human; they are inside all of us. We know we are capable of this — to be that strong or that cool or that generous. To persevere and connect and contribute the way our gods can — that’s why we invented them, why we revere them, and why they resonate with us. We have them inside, every day.

And yet we have no perfect word for expressing godlike abilities. We don’t know how to talk about what it is to perform in a mythological way, to strip away the artifice and let the deity express itself.

And the Icarus Deception pushes us to avoid even thinking of it. it strikes deep into our psyche with a vivid warning about the dangers of hubris.

Too late.

We’ve built a world where the only option is hubris, where the future belongs to anyone willing to act like the gods of our myths. Better coin a word for it.

The Japanese call it kamiwaza.

If the gods are us, then do we dare be as the gods are?

The Japanese term kamiwaza, like most great words for which we have no equivalent, is difficult to translate. The shortest version is “godlike.”

So when we strip away self-doubt and artifice, when we embrace initiative and art, we are left with kamiwaza. The purity of doing it properly but without self-consciousness. The runner who competes with kamiwaza is running with purity, running properly, running as the gods would run.

How dare we? How dare we presume to ignore Daedalus, to fly close to the sun, to apparently forego humility in a quest for something unattainable?

How can we not dare?

Hubris makes us godlike, and being godlike makes us human.Seth Godin

We are the New Gods Now [So we might just get good at it]

Godlike or Kamiwaza is also a term used in League of Legends and DotA the original MOBA game. It’s a reward shouted out by the game when you have scored multiple kills in a row without being killed yourself. The reward is originated shouted out in the first Unreal Tournament game.

“We are aspiring amateur gods now” — Kevin Kelly

It’s like Jason Silva says in his London Real interview. We are the New Gods Now. We are the frontal lobes of the Universe. We are the Universe being aware of it self. And we are just at the beginning of our long journey through the Universe. So we might just become the Guardians of our own small blue and green spaceship travelling through our galaxy. So it’s not heresy to have hubris anymore. It is what we must do. But we must do it together with lots of Empathy like I discuss in my blog: The Way of Empathy [The Beast With 2 Hearts].

Seth Godin speaks like many others of this new Connected Economy. It’s good start on our path to walk on. All of us is smarter than any of us. We just need to guide each others so that we don’t walk into darkness and we need to challenge each others to do better. To do better Art!

Master - Sensei - Ninja

Michael Sillion — Master – Sensei – Ninja

My Hubris [Master – Sensei – Ninja]

I too must be Kamiwaza or Godlike in life. Here is what I will focus on. From Michael SillioN I took M-S-N and made it too Master – Sensei – Ninja.

“The only thing standing in your way is you
When you get into flow-state you dim the self critic in the brain” — Jason Silva

Master [A True Master is an Eternal Student]

You must master yourself. Master yourself and you master the challenge. A True Master is never fully learned. This is what Socrates said long ago and what John Lloyd says in his inspiring talk on the RSA: General Ignorance: It’s all about what you don’t know.

Admitting you know nothing is the only way to recognize you still have much to learn — John Lloyd

I will do my best to learn something new every day. To Challenge Myself and my Brain every day.

Sensei [Every Mistake is a Lesson]

I want to spread my findings to others. To share my thoughts on the future. We must learn from our mistakes and share the lessons. As we learn to embrace our vulnerability we are able to share our mistakes and iterate faster to successful innovation. This is a very hard thing to for us humans to do. But as Brené BrownSeth Godin and Neil Gaiman puts it: It is both necessary and the only way the we can put forth our creativity and do True Art.

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls” — Joseph Campbell

Ninjas is small team that can take on any challenge using cooperation and smart approach. Check out my blog: How to be a modern Ninja and the audio from SXSW: Ninja innovation.

Taking the Holistic approach and sneak in my thoughts everywhere. I don’t want to stand still. I want to go boldly into the future with Collaboration, Sustainability, Transparency and Community in mind. To be a Holistic Thinking Ninja 🙂

Small teams of Ninjas can easily take on a much larger foe using teamwork and their abilities in a smart way — Ninja Innovation

My Futurist Path [Holistic Thinking Ninja]

As a Futurist and Holistic Thinking Ninja I want to do at least 4 things:

1. Future-Dojo or Social Dojo
I want to create a Future-centre or a Future-Dojo. What I call a Creative Social Dojo. Preferable my first here in Varberg, Sweden, where I live with my children and then spread the concept out into the world. A place where all ages can come and experiment with creativity and tech stuff. It’s a meeting place for creative people. Here we would all train in becoming better versions of our self. What I call Creative Ninjas. Who train their muscles every. The cognitive creative one, their social empath one and the actual body we all live in.

I’m thinking of it as having 4 functions.

Modern School, MakerSpace and Dojo

Incubator and Idea Cavern ThinkTank

Co-Working place

Social Meeting Ground and Awesome Play Ground

People can build things in Minecraft together and then 3D print them. A place where we can watch inspiring talks from TED and all other events. And discuss them together. And watch Sci-Fi Storytelling together and then talk about what is possible and not. I talk more about my thoughts on Sci-Fi Storytelling in this Blog series: Summertime Storytelling

We could do exercises in Empathy to discuss the importance of Cooperation and Collaboration in the a future where food, water and recourses will be scars. A place where we create the future together. Every School should come visit as often as they could to experiment and talk about the future. A Future Temple where both Ninjas and Pirates are welcome 😉

2. Future Meet – Unconference [How should we create a sustainable society?]
I want to have a Future meet event. Like the best part of Almedalen where people come together in an Unconference type of way to discuss how we should Architect the Future together. Taking the Holistic Approach about how should we create a sustainable society together? Either as a standalone event and/or as recurring event on the Future-centre.

3. Futurist Visionary [Speaker and Teacher]
I want visit others as a Futurist. I want to share my thoughts on the Future. As an inspirational teacher [Sensei] and Public Speaker who teaches others how to inspire themselves. I want to meet kids in school and inspire them. Every school and workplace should have Futurist who comes to visit and inspire them for the Future. Who help them create Visions for their own.

4. Future and Science-Hacks
I want help create and organise Science Hacks, Future Hacks and Hackatons like Science Hack Day for aspiring designers, developers, scientists and other geeks. Just about anyone interested in designing the future together are welcome.

Update
My Ninja Clan [Superhero Ninja Party]

In honor of me hitting level 40, I had Superhero Ninja Party this summer. We played “Superhero KUBB” where everyone got a special ability to use during the game. We should do this in more sports and games. As it is really empowering. Everyone also got the chance to dress up as hero, ninja or pirate of some kind. Then we designed our own personal special skills for the Future 🙂

I love this type of Party. So I will continue to develop the concept for the Future. Me and my Ninja Clan – My Extended Family.

A Rim Vision of the Future

This is part 2 of 4 of for the Big Summertime Storytelling I do this summer with Man of Steel, Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

Also check out my Storytelling post on Cloud Atlas, Iron Man 3, Oblivion and Princess of Mars.

[005]
Pacific Grim [A Rim Vision of the Future]

We must use Storytelling and Science Fiction to envision a new Future. And to raise important question for an ongoing dialog about the future and where we are going. We should draw parallels to our past and present to give us better picture of who we are and how we build our society. Why do we go forward?

I am a Mech Lover. Somewhere in my heart I just love big moving robots. I don’t know why but maybe you do? So that’s why I had to go and see the latest Mech Movie: Pacific Rim. It starts out great. The first 5 minutes we get a fast walk-through of the events leading up to current situation in the movie. This really feels like we are going to see an epic Sci-Fi movie with great visions of the future. And then… We get nothing of the things promised…

Don’t get me wrong. The Mechs are just awesome and the Action is superb. Expect that apparently they have a sword that is super effective in the fights, but it’s not used at all until the very end. And if this a popcorn movie where you are supposed to leave your brain at the door… Sorry, no can do. I am my brain and so are you. All movies weather are dumb or smart is all about storytelling and it affects us all in some way. There is no excuse to make a dumb movie ever. Storytelling is the ultimate learning and visionary tool and we are using it wrong.

“Storytelling is about Profound lessons that you should internalize.
sugar-coated in an entertaining ride. That are not to challenging but are embedded with deep truths” — Jason Silva

I’ll talk about some of the things missing in the movie below and how it should be.

CoyoteTango

Mechs are cool! Gigantic Mechs are Awesome!

Social Media [We will just not drop it]

Come on it’s now 2013 and we’ve been using social media for many years. Are all Sci-Fi movies and television shows from now on set in an alternative universe where Social Media didn’t happen? It’s so Sad that they all have to be this way. And it will not be like today. It will have evolved to a whole new level. Try using your fantasy to imagine it for us 🙂

The Future is a Team Game [Only together can we save Earth]

In the opening there is this great mention of that all nations came together. And then nothing. The science department is a one man show. We are now really starting to see that the future will be a collaborative effort. We are beginning to Crowdfund and Crowd-develop all sort of things at an exponentially growing rate. We are not going to stop that just like that, when a crisis shows up. It’s exactly then that we going to put these tools to really good use. I can see that the design and construction is the effort very large collaborating teams all over the world. We would all join up and contribute to our favorite Mech Design. With this new gigantic Metal Gods we would all bow to them in Awe.

We would proudly fly the team color of our favorite Mech Team.

And speaking of Games. In a future with gigantic Mechs, every aspect of them are going to turn into a game. We would have large virtual simulation games of the Mechs. That way we are going to find the absolute best pilot teams as the winners of massive eSports tournaments. Not the pathetic sparring they have in the movie.

All this should be in the movie…

Storytelling FTW [Let’s Gear Up for Joint Tomorrow]

Movies like these should be an awesome experience in creating a vision in what Mankind is capable of when put under the threat of extinction. We should leave the theater in an absolute astounding sense of awe of what we can do if we all work together against a common enemy. Not just pointless stuff to earn more money. I know that ComicBookGrl19 calls this “The one original film that came out this summer”. But not so. For me this feels like a standard action movie made in the 90-ties.

Storytelling has been around for as long as we have been humans. And it’s the storytelling itself that first made us into the storytelling chimpanzee we are today. You must embrace fiction. It will make you more empathetic and more able to navigate life’s problems and dilemmas. — Jonathan Gottschall

Stories pulls us together and unites us with common values. It’s the core that makes us into a groupish vehicle for our genes to pass down to our offspring. We use them to set a shared Moral Matrix for the group. They create our culture and our entire existence. — Lord Sillion

This is what Storytelling has always been about. Not a whimsical nonsense without wisdom and visions. The Wachowskis showed us with The Matrix over 10 years ago that you can make a cool action movie with deep truths, embedded with philosophy and thought provoking, meaningful visions of the future. As did their main inspiration: Ghost in the Shell before them. And they did it again now with Cloud Atlas.

Read Jonathan Gottschall’s The Storytelling Animal to find out more about how our brain thinks all its thoughts in stories. And read my blog about Storytelling.

Why is this Important? [What we can Imagine –> We can Build]

BackToTheFuture

We don’t need a Time Machine to redesign the Future

Because what we can Envision and Imagine we can build together. It’s how the brain works. It runs on stories. Particular the visual ones. We must stop treating movies and television as dumb entertainment and use it for what it really does. All things we see and experience affects us in some way. We are constantly bombarded with visions and messages. Let’s make them something we can be proud of and aspire to.

It’s time to take the future back. We start by building a common vision of the Future.

I’ll soon talk about how to build a common vision…
And tomorrow I will go and see Elysium. I put my hopes up for Elysium and the Story it will tell.

Read about Elysium here.

Evolve the world with you in it. [The Story about Me]

We can all become better at mingle. Even if some of you are pros already there is still more skills to master. Here are some pro tips in English and in Swedish.

Almedalen [Escalating the Network Society]

Today I have been planning my trip to Crown Mingle event here in Sweden: Almedalen. Everyone who is the slightest interested in changing society here in Sweden should go there. So in preparation I have been listening to the Swedish podcast Almedalen Sherpas about making the most about your stay there. Especially episode 10 about how to mingle.

ONE DAY He realized that his skills could make an impact on the World,
BECAUSE OF THIS he set forth to Architect the Transformation of Society,
BECAUSE OF THIS The New Network Society is now on the right track towards a sustainable future,
UNTIL FINALLY WE all learned how to live together sharing our resources and our knowledge in an epic quest to make Earth the best place in the Universe to live.

My Future Diagram [Social Ninja – Gamer – Futurist – Demon Dancer]

Envision our Journey towards a Better Tomorrow #Blogg100

Where are our journey going? [Core Values, Vision and Mission]

Today I have been listening to Percy Barnevik on Connect Väst. He is talking about how to be a great leader and his work in the micro credit organization Hand in Hand. Apart from having one of the most entertaining presentations I’ve been to there is something missing. More on that in a moment.

Percy Barnevik

Percy Barnevik

Why are we doing our Journey?
Where is it going?
And how do we travel today?

After him Björn Lindqvist talks about what shall be found in the heart of any organization:

Core Values — Why are we working here? Today we must all weave in socially responsible values in our hearts. That defines the Journey we are taking together.

The Vision — A Mental Picture – of what an organization wants to achieve over time. The North Star! The direction of our journey.

The Mission — The current Quest that we are doing in order to further us along on our journey.

Check out more here: Vision and Mission – What’s the difference and why does it matter? and Mission Statements and Vision Statements.

Can we all be like Google?

The day finishes up with Annika Steiber that have been studying innovation management and what make companies like Google tick. They need to have

Ethics — Don’t be Evil and Do Good for Society.
Ambition — Shoot for the Stars and Change the World.
Behavior – The organization need to be Fast and Scalable. Never to bog down under Bureaucracy and Hierarchy.
Focus — First make a good product then the money will come.

Sustainability Day [Tax resources and not labor]

At the same time Sustainability Day is going on in Stockholm and #SDay are also trending on Twitter at the same tame as #ConnectDagen.

Here the chief economic analyst at the Think tank Global Utmaning, Sandro Scocco, says all the numbers are pointing in the wrong direction. We need change the economic incentives to make things happens. The suggest the same as Geoff Mulgan did in his speech at the RSA.

Tax resources and not labor. In that way everyone will quickly come with smart reusing with what we got. Companies can start rent everything they produce instead of selling it. So that they take full responsibility for the lifecycle. And it’s in their own best interest that all things made is made to endure.

We need to cross-fertilize [Let’s create new meeting places]

Here I also see the second problem opportunity. All the money and entrepreneurs are one event in Gothenburg at the same time as all the scientist and the creative thinkers are at another event in Stockholm. And this are not the same people with the same networks. I know because I have been to both. Here my idea is to create an event where the two worlds can meet. An unconference with focus the social and the Networking. To create new exiting enterprises.

A Vision is something you can Envision. To picture in your mind. This is because sight is our primary sensory system. The brain tries to imagine what it will envision next. Then it asks the eyes if this is the correct vision.

A vision is complex picture in your mind. Let’s create one to be proud of together 🙂

Here politicians, venture capitalists, scientist and entrepreneurs must create this vision of the future together.

All the Children Shall Lead #Blogg100

What do you leave behind? [Explore new paths every day]

LunarBots

3D-printed LunarBots

Today was the last Day of NASA’s Space Apps Hackaton. The largest in the world with 9000 participants. We finished making a prototype of our boardgame including 3D-printed LunarBots. Jens took a 20 minute course in Maya and learned how to make a basic 3D-models. And I learned how to make a Stop Motion presentation movie  with 144 frames using the simple app iMotion HD.

See our final presentation on Bambuser.

Generations to come [What must they think of you?]

What I learned from the day is that we do this for our children. Let’s all think of and be like our children. With this being a space weekend we of course had to listen to some space music. And there is only one space music band for me: S.P.O.C.K. My favorite to songs is Dark Side of the Force and Wolf in the Fold.

Bu the song we feature here is the very striking All the Children Shall Lead.

I’m sitting in my quarters aboard the ship
thinking about this very special trip

400 people, destiny: our closest star
mankind has never ever been that far
Soon comes the future, then we will die
All the children shall lead
We’ll never see the world that lies ahead
long before we get there all adults will be dead

Then it is up to the kids we brought along
now they learn what is right and what is wrong
Soon comes the future, then we will die
All the children shall lead
As a bad example we show them how it used to be
before the year 2000 it was a total misery
Soon comes the future, then we will die
All the children shall lead

What path are you treading on? [Let’s craft a new path together]

Now is the time to invest in our children like never before. They must think us mad about the state we have left their Homeworld in. Change is happening all over the world. But in many places it is still on the wrong path. A path leading right of the edge of cliff. Are you on that path? If so you can help craft a new path for us and our children and their children’s children.

Life is about the journey and what we leave behind. What path do we chose to travel on?

If we teach our kids at a young age that don’t have to accept everything as it is happening to them. We can teach the to be curious about their own future. That they can be creative and design it them self. And spend their time crafting their own path.

We take our lifestyle for granted and think of it as the most natural thing in the world. That’s why we must study history. So that we can learn how different it was in the past. In this way we can see that the our future can be very different too in kind.

It only takes about 3 months for us humans to adapt to a new living condition to such a degree that we start thinking of it as “Normal”
