Celebrate The Future

Celebrate The Future

The Future does not really exist. Nor does The Past.

They are both fantasies created in our minds. The Future is a probabilistic simulation we run in our minds in order to help shape the world we want to live in.

The Past unlike The Future has actually happened. The Past, as represented in our mind, is a mental simulation too. Our memories are not precise records of what actually happened. They are reconstructions of what happened, with the brain and your imagination filling in most of the blanks based on your emotional connection to that past event.

We need the future. It’s a thought-experiment that triggers our curiosity. It’s a vision that will point us in the right direction on our path in life. It will trigger innovation. It will give us hope. It’s a land of more and better science. It’s warmer place where we care for each other. With out it we would never had gone to the moon or invented internet. It’s a place of magic and fantasies. And yet we long to make it real.

That is why we celebrate the future. We do it with Science Fiction and Time Travel Stories.

We need the things that aren’t real. Our brain runs on fiction. That’s why we should celebrate the good and vanquish the bad.

Lets celebrate the future!

If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything - Marty McFly - Back To The Future

If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything – Marty McFly – Back To The Future

Back To The Future Party!

We can celebrate the future in lots of different way. One of the ways that we can do this is to celebrate Back To The Future Day 21 October 2015. It is on this date that Marty McFly arrives in the future in Hill Valley. There already lots of parties planned for this that including the Marty McFly Welcome Party in the actual Hill Valley. Many cinemas the world over will celebrate this by showing 2 or 3 of the Back to future Movies on that night.

Back To The Future October 21, 2015

Back To The Future October 21, 2015

This is so Awesome! I would have thought that only a couple of us here in Sweden would have thought this was cool. Now literal every city in Sweden are having a Back To The Future viewing party. I’m so psyched about this!!!

There is even a short film coming called Doc Brown Saves the World!

Also other ways to enjoy storytelling about the future is to watch Tomorrowland the movie that is out now on Blue Ray and Apple TV. And right now we are in the middle of the epic 6 episode final season of my favourite series Continuum.

And Play games that takes place in alternative futures to as a thought experiment. Like Forbidden Stars set in the Warhammer 40K universe that I got yesterday to play this October.

And it doesn’t stop by watching our favorite stories together. Plan more and better Meetups, parties, events and conferences where we meet and discuss what future we want to create together.

And do it today! Because remember the future only exist in our minds and if we don’t do it now it will never be done.

I challenge you all to dare dream up a better future and then take part in creating it! — Lord Sillion

I see you in the Future! At a celebration 🙂

The Buccaneer Spirit

The Buccaneer Spirit

Are you an opportunist?
Are you curios about your next endeavour? We live in an opportune world. That means that you and your tribe are responsible for what you hunt down. What path you take through life. No-one else is going make the choices for you. In the distant past fortune belonged to the hunters. But then came the farming revolution. In the near past, fortune was hard to come by if you weren’t born into it. Some small part of us who were still hunters where able to cast of the Yoke to get ahead. Especially in the golden age of piracy. Namely the Buccaneers.
But now we can’t use questionable moral to get what we want anymore. We have to collaborate and be nice to get it, if we are going to have surviving chance on this planet.

We can still use the driving force behind what it is to be a hunter and a buccaneer, to become great entrepreneurs, heroes and adventurers. What I call the Buccaneer Spirit. We can use it to ignite a better narrative for our lives and how to make better life here on Planet Earth. Fortune Favours The Bold!

Opportunity Favours The Bold

“Opportunity favours the bold” — Richard Branson

This is how Richard Branson opens a great post about opportunity: My top 10 quotes on opportunity. In a way it triggered me to write this post about the concept of opportunity. This and 4 very “pirately” events that affected me, in the same week this summer. Both from the aspect of the mythical pirate and Buccaneer and the modern entrepreneur. I feel that this is closer to the hunter mentality rather the new farmer craze that we have seen in the last couple of thousand years. There are great entrepreneurs that possesses both the hunter mentality or the farmer mentality. The one Seth Godin puts forth here: Hunters & Farmers. We are all different. Some of us, has far more of the hunter essence. The opportunist essence. The one I call the Buccaneer Spirit.

RichardBranson

“Opportunity favours the bold” — Richard Branson

I start of with my poem to the Buccaneer Spirit:

The Buccaneer Spirit

What is that drives the heart of man to go on a foolish endeavour? To risk everything for the gain of gold, fame and fortune? Why do some people hunt for more than that they currently have? And why will they do crazy things to get it? Is it …

The lust for adventure?
The lust for a golden prize?
The lust for togetherness?
The lust for violence?
The lust in pushing oneself?
To take away the pain of the past?
To lift the Yoke of the old world?
The Ambition to get ahead?

The lust for fame & glory

Is it in all of us, or are we different and some people are just born as farmers?

What is an entrepreneur? Are we born to do it or can it be trained?

Can the Buccaneer Spirit be tamed or channeled? Or should it be suppressed and forgotten? Is it something the military has traditionally done? How can we do right by this energy in a modern world? Is it for Athletes and Warriors? Or for go-getting Entrepreneurs?

Can everyone plant their flag in the right way and make a stand?

What fights are worth fighting?
What rebellions are worth dying for?

For what future would you do anything, to see succeed?
Are you a buccaneer too?

Do you have the Buccaneer Spirit?

In an opportune world only the opportunist gets ahead

— Lord Commander Sillion

It’s An Opportune World [Who Are Your Monsters?]

Mankind is the greatest opportunist and omnivore this planet has ever seen. This is no small feat. There are many spices that are extremely adaptable and has survived the eons of change on this planet. But none other than us has tamed the environment and actually gone into space and to the moon.

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein

Of course some of us are far more opportunistic and adaptable than others. I’m especially thinking of the pirates and adventurers that sailed the Caribbean Sea and the Spanish main during the Golden age of piracy. Both mythical and real, they occupy a certain place in many of our hearts. Many of them had a very questionable moral by modern standards and did many hideous acts of cruelty. As where common in a different age.

Everyone is a monster to someone.
Since you are so convinced that I am yours, I will be it – Captain Flint

Still we romanticizes them and the myth of what they did simply because of the entrepreneurial spirit they possessed to actually succeed in their many endeavors. This goes not only for the pirates but for all adventures setting sails and casting out in a harsh unknown world on the seven seas. In a time that the likeleyhood to die from Scurvey or other decies was far higher, than be killed in comabt or any other way. I call this the Buccaneer Spirit after the name Buccaneer.

We all have some monsters to slay, some dictator to topple, a revolution to fight. To find what is true to us, is no small task. Many of us are set on the wrong fight and challenge. What are your challenges in life? Your truth?

The Buccaneer Charm [Here Be Pirates]

My own enchantment with the buccaneers began as child when I first saw the movie The Crimson Pirate from 1952 starring Burt Lancaster and Nick Cravat as swashbuckling acrobats. This movie together with Star Wars was the first moves my uncle had on VHS that me and my brother watch repeatedly during our childhood. I think it formed us many ways to live a life full of dreams and stories.

Be careful what stories we imbue our young with – Lord Commander Sillion

Here comes the four Buccaneer triggers I experienced in one week:

Pirates! and Merchants & Marauders

When Sid Meier’s Pirates! came out in 1990 on our Amiga, it became one of our most played games ever. We simply loved the narration and the freedom of the game. Now in modern times there has come out a fantastic boardgames version of Pirates called Merchants & Marauders designed by Christian Marcussen. And this summer there was an expansions for the game called Seas of Glory that I finally got to play during the weekend of WarCon – PeaceCon gaming convention in Varberg. So this is the first of 4 pirately triggers for this article. I just love this open sandbox feeling you get in this game. You feel like you are set on an adventure with an open goal. To craft your way into a glorious future. If you get the chance to play, do so. Maybe with me?

Marauders

Playing Merchants & Marauders at Warcon

Götheborg and Fortress Varberg

This was also the week the rebuilt 18th century ship Götheborg visited the harbour of Varberg will full flavour. There is something special about standing next to a ship of this magnitude staring into a broadside of cannons. It does something to my pirate heart. Present of the harbour of Varberg is also the very large Fortress Varberg. It only adds to the flavour. One can suddenly understand the strategic importance of a large fortress with big cannons on a high wall that can reach much further than the ships at bay. Standing up there the big ships looks both big and small at same time.

Buccaneer Sillion in front of Götheborg

Bilgewater & Gangplank of [League Of Legends]

This was also the week that the Bilgewater event launched in my favorite game League Of Legends. Full to the brims with pirately skins, maps, voice-overs and an awesome Theme-song very inspired with the Black Sails song. The main character Gangplank was already a favorite of mine and now he was improved to be even cooler and better. And the new Rouge Admiral Garren and Captain Fortune looks awesome.

“Fortune doesn’t favour fools” — Captain Miss Fortune

The story is summarized in this cool song on YouTube: This is Bilgewater.

“Fortune doesn’t favour fools” — Captain Miss Fortune

“Fortune doesn’t favour fools” — Captain Miss Fortune

Black Sails [Blood Red]

The last trigger is of course my new favorite show: Black Sails. I have been holding of to see season 2 of it all spring for some unknown reason. Clearly it was no coincidence that this was the very week I would start see season 2. It is almost to good to be true. When writing this I have seen 8 episodes of season 2 so far and can without a doubt say that this some of the best story and writing I have ever seen. There is great dialog and great writing with lots of references to Marcus Aurelius stoic thoughts from his book Meditations. Awesome multidimensional characters all with different goals and agendas. A stunning setting and visuals in vividly live Nassau. You can feel the sweet all the way to the sofa of the heat. This was meant to see on a sweaty summer like this.

Black Sails so enhances the feeling in the rest of my triggers that it makes the whole narration for me. Many of the characters embody the driving force of the #BuccaneerSpirit.

Jack Rackham is the charming leader with good social skills and cunning.
Eleanor Guthrie is the driven entrepreneur who has to be very tough to make it in a mans world.
Charles Vane as the ruthless hunter that sheer no methods to get ahead.

Max is the provider of secrets and information with a grander plan.
Captain Flint is unstoppable force with true grit, who will stop at nothing reach his hidden goals and vision.
John Silver is the true opportunist that can’t not take the opportune road.

John Silver - The True Opportunist

The Buccaneer Endeavor [Become An Opportunist]

“You can’t outwit fate by standing on the sidelines placing little side bets about the outcome of life… if you don’t play you can’t win.” – Judith McNaught

Where does that leave us then, You and I? Are you a Hunter or Farmer? Or little of both? How can we use this to become better versions of ourselves? It’s all about finding the right narrative for our own journey. We human are nothing but suckers for our own and other’s stories. The better the stories the more excitement it ignite in us.

How can we ignite the Buccaneer Spirit in us?

Captain Flint promises his men that if they dig in and makes an extraordinary effort they will become princes of the new world. It’s the same for us entrepreneurs. The old industrial world is slowly being taken over by a new one. A world that you and I can help architect, build and flourish in. It’s gonna be hard work. It’s gonna require extraordinary skill. Some people will laugh at you. Some people will even hate your guts. This is the way it’s supposed to be. If no-one feels anything for what you doing, good or bad, you’re not hauling ass enough 😉

“Friends…brothers…the prize that you and I have been pursuing is L’Urca de Lima. The Hulk. A prize of almost unimaginable value. Now with this page securely in our possession, we can begin our hunt and we will succeed. No matter the cost. No matter the struggle. I will see that prize is yours. I’m not just gonna make you rich. I’m not just gonna make you strong. I’m gonna make you the princes of the New World!” — Captain Flint

I believe that anyone who is willing, can muster up with a new crew to cast away, set sails and go on an endeavour into this new world of opportunity. There are many of us who longer believes that the preservation of status quo as slaves under the old world of consumerism and capitalism, where we are to do as we are told no longer holds up. Sure there will be resistance from most of the slaves under the system that are so invested in the old system that they won’t and can’t unhook from it.

The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it. — Morpheus – The Matrix

Do you feel the itch? To do something more adventurous with your life? Are you stuck in your own Matrix? Do you want to rewrite our own Narrative? A chance to take the RED Pill Rum each day? 😉

Hunt Down Your Destiny [Cast Of Your Yoke]

It’s time to hunt down your own Destiny.

Ships aren’t meant to sit in the harbour. There meant to sail the seven seas and take chances on great endeavours. Some say plant your flag and take a stand as a warrior. I say Raise Your Flag and become the Opportunity Hunter and Buccaneer. Sure fighting a rebellion on an island for hope is a worthy cause. Still there are an archipelago of undiscovered truths waiting to be discovered by mankind. Are you one of the frontier explorers on the this “Enterprise”? Are you ready cast of your Yoke?

“Where no man has gone before?”

So open your logbook and record your journey along the way.
Let’s hunt some opportunities in an opportune world!

Civilization needs its monsters. You think Whitehall wants piracy to flourish in the Bahamas? No, I don't think they want it, but I think they're aware of the cost associated with trying to fight it. And I think that that sound travels. You're an educated man, my lord, but I think it worth reminding you that in most cases a man trying to change the world fails for one simple and unavoidable reason... everyone else -- James McGraw [Captain Flint]

The Buccaneer Spirit Party [Hunters & Explorers]

My thoughts immediately go to a gathering of like-minded entrepreneurs. Do you love the spirit of the buccaneer as much as I do? Are you a frontier explorer? A Hunter and not a farmer?

Could we make a conference or a meetup next summer of sorts with the buccaneer and opportunist theme? We all know it’s good to pivot when stuck and “Dead in the Water”. This will be about helping each other to spot the right opportunities and pivot on old ideas. And set together an able crew for an entrepreneurial endeavour. The lift the gold-haze on being stuck on the hunt for the wrong prize. To sharpen ones buccaneer tools. You could even call it a “A Pivoteer meetup” 😉

Could we have it in Varberg on the fortress if and when the ship Götheborg returns? Maybe we could even book a dinner onboard the ship? Or in any other flourishing harbor that is exited about the idea and what it represents? To make a visual stance in that we are doing something different. Something BOLD and adventurous. We are lifting the Yoke of the old economy and scaling the rails in the new world.

A Buccaneer Spirit Party for Entrepreneurs, Hunters and World Explorers.

Entrepreneur Sweden and Startup Manifesto

TL;DR:
To make us even better at entrepreneurship we need to go hardcore in our strategies to become it. We need more and better connected entrepreneur communities. We need more events and locales to meet at. We need better rules, laws and support from the state and the cities. We need leaders with visions to make it happen. And we need a national network with Entrepreneur Ambassadors to keep track on everyone and all that is happening. I, Lord Sillion, is one of them for Varberg and Halland.

Entrepreneur Sweden and Startup Manifesto
#SwedenTech

Sweden has long been both an entrepreneur country and not. Like all other countries nothing is ever black or white. The startup tech scene in Sweden has been famous since the late 90ies. But now the rest of the world is catching up and running past us. What must we do to run faster as well? One thing is the Swedish Startup Manifesto that was launched just prior to Almedalen. We also talk a lot about digitalization this year and what Sweden can to get on track there. If we do it right there can be lots of opportunities for Swedish startups to take us into the digital age. And we even had a national entrepreneur day installed in Almedalen. It’s was on all the peoples lips. That we must do more to take Sweden into the future. But what can we do?

Manifesto

Hur bygger vi livskraftiga startupregioner?

02 Juli, 2015

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
– Jim Rohn

Men vart går man i Göteborg?

https://podoftheday.wordpress.com/2015/03/19/annika-lidne/

https://twitter.com/bylineMiranda/lists/swedentech-ambassadeurs/members

Entrepreneur Ambassador

Kolla även in Seth Godin’s onlinekurs för frinalsare: Freelancer Course.
.

Halland – Halmstad – Varberg

Smarter Than Yesterday

Have you been curios and learning something new today? If you haven’t there is no need to give up hope. Turns out that curiosity is trainable. And even learning new skills doesn’t take years if you apply the right methods according to Tim Ferriss, who has been a human guinea pig in learning new skills in the shortest amount of time. You too can chose to get better every day. The best way to do this, is to spend time with others who also Level Up! each day 🙂

I call this being a Curiosity Ninja!

Ignore Everybody [Do Learn Form Them]

Today I got inline to get some Norway Lobsters at a local fish wagon. Same place I went to yesterday when I didn’t get any because I was there to late. So I did learn and became smarter than yesterday. Some people do. Others has worked for 20 years and only have 1 year of experience to account for, i.e. they has the same 1 year of experience 20 times. This I “Read” today as I listened through the audiobook Ignore Everybody with Hugh MacLeod. I really peculiar book that isn’t for everybody. It was for me. I really like the double messages that confirms that nothing is ever black or white. Check it out: Ignore everybody and 39 Keys To Creativity.

Many people have already made the mistakes that your are about to make. You don’t have to learn form your own mistakes. You can actually learn from others 🙂

Ignore Everybody - The Blog

Ignore Everybody – The Blog

Level Up! [Make Smarter Choices]

What I’m getting at is that becoming smarter each day by learning by your own and preferably others mistakes is a choice. I choose to do things differently today to see if they turned out any better. Different is of course not always better. But without experimentation we can’t innovate and improve ourselves.

Neo , The Chosen One – Are he making decisions or are he just to understand the choices already made?
– What Choices Do You Make?

I will go back to the word “Choice”. Am I really choosing to do things different? This is a very interesting question. So interesting that I had to re-watch my absolute favourite movie on the matter tonight: The Matrix Reloaded. Did I have choice in watching it tonight or am I just to understand why I watched it again? The question of free will and if the universe is deterministic is very interesting on a human level. Mostly because this is the only level, part from some really smart mathematicians, that most humans can think on. And it’s ok. We need to think like humans and we need to become better at it all the time.

Most of us humans don’t really think about becoming better humans on a daily basis.

But what if we did?

I now feel that this is one of the things I really care about. How can we become better versions of ourself than we where yesterday? How can you? Like in a roleplaying game like World Of Warcraft where one of the main focuses is getting more experience each day so the you can increase your skills and learn new talents every week, month and year. To Level Up! This is the book I’m writing. How to Level Up! your life. By training your brain, your body and your empathy and social skills every day.

Check Tai Lopez too and his take on investing and improving yourself every day: Invest in Yourself.

Double down on your own brain and invest in yourself — Tai Lopez

I have also been reading and doing exercises in Daniel Priestley’s books, Key Person of Influence and Entrepreneur Revolution. They are all about defining yourself and all of your experiences into a clear version of yourself. One that you want to take further into life. One that others will look up to in your particular tribe and niche.

Do give Daniel a listen on his long talk on London Real.

Within the context of an environment, certain outcomes become very normal - Daniel Priestley

Become part of an environment that normalizes what ever you want to succeed with – Daniel Priestley

Do want to get a brain that sees the world in a new perspective?

Both Robert Kegan and Peter Sage both talk about another effect of pursuing knowledge and insights each day. Our brain can reach new orders of mentality and consciousness where we perceive the ourself and the world in whole new ways. Read more here and here. So by training yourself you can actually become better at training yourself. This is very good news for you. Also people will wanna hang out with you if you are a wiser person.

Find Your Fellows [Start a Level Up! Club]

The central theme in all this is to spend time with other people who also want to Level Up! their lives. Not with people who drag you down but with people who lift you up. This is sometimes hard. There are global meetups like Live Your Legend Local and online communities like London Real Academy that tries to gather people into peer groups that boost each other on a regular basis. Or start your own Level Up! Club. Start befriending people you want to have in you Level Up! club.

As for the book I mention at the top: Ignore Everybody. With it I mean Ignore Everybody except for your Level Up! Club.

And Mentors [Who Are Your Mentors?]

Try to find mentors to include in the group of people who you spent the most time with. People who are already ding things toy want to do. Listen to Geoff Woods on the subject: The Mentee. And listen to Tai Lopez TED Talk. I know this isn’t easy. I have never had a mentor in my life. And the all the mentors I have today come in the form of Books and Podcast with interesting people. Still I would like to find some real mentors and become one as well.

Creative Ninja Midsummer

Today is Midsummer’s Eve. When we celebrate that sun is giving us the most light it can up in the north. The sun is also very dangerous to us and the earth protects us from most of its dangerous attributes and leaves us with it’s vitality. We must all become more vital here on Earth. And celebrate what the earth does for us by doing more for earth. Every step and every move should put us one step further towards the vision of a better and brighter tomorrow. It’s time we start pulling in the same direction towards this future. Not running around like headless chickens. Starting this midsummer weekend I will point us in the right direction. This midsummer the training will begin. The Creative Ninja Summer is about to begin!

Midsummer Ninja

Midsummer Ninja

Let’s all become vital persons for Earths future!

Come join me in Varberg on Midsommar [Midsummer] and throughout the summer. We will kick off this summer with helping each other setting great plans for the future. And hold each other accountable in creating this plans. Creativity only comes from doing. Ideas are cheap and implementation is everything.

I will also head of to London and Almedalen in the next week to come. And in July we will have a Creative Ninja Camp during Hallifornia. See you there?

Design For Engagement

Here it is. My take on making comprehensive overview of what to think about when designing an event or an activity of any kind. Things to think about is who is it for and why should they care about doing it? Look what others have designed before you and steal the best parts and experiment with them.

1. Build a story that it is easy to share into the activity you are designing!

2. Use Design Thinking! Who is your audience?

3. Onboarding and sacrifice are things to consider.

4. Find your ambassadors and elevate them!

5. Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

6. Build content and a community around your event and prolong the experience!

Make things full with Flow, Fun, Friends and Meaning [Design For Engagement]

When designing any kind of activity, game, competition, puzzle, event, learning, system or challenge it’s good to have in mind the basic fundamentals of what motivates and triggers people to join in or take action. This is also great advice when doing crowdfunding events on sites like Kickstarter.

The activity can be learning a skill or a trade. All things we do is practice and leaning in some way towards some form improvement or mastery. When things are “Just For Fun”, it’s mostly then we are learning the fastest. Getting into “Flow” is usually the most effective way of learning something or to be the most productive in that activity. Some of the thinking here I have borrowed directly from Amy Jo Kim’s lecture mostly about gaming. I think it can be applied to most human activities. I also focus mainly on the positive motivations. Sure there are many strong negative feelings that drives change and motivation like fear, hate, revenge. But I don’t go to into how to design for them here. Instead I try to focus what makes things fly.

If you think something is missing or needs to be changed just comment below or contact me 🙂

Lets do better design thinking when we design our activities.

Triggers of The Element
[Cognitive – Athletic – Competition – Cooperation – Exploration – Expression- Collecting]

There are 6 elements in an activity that can be combined to trigger different kind of things in people: Cognitive Challenge, Athletic ChallengeCompetitive, Cooperation, Exploration, Expression. The users, combatant, player and adventurer is just not one style but a combination of these. Get to know your different user styles of the activity. Find out what types they are and how to design for them.

There is also the bonus category of Collecting

1 Cognitive Challenge

Many games – puzzles and activities revolve around a cognitive challenge that we can solve in some kind. Without this challenge many of feel that a challenge becomes dull rather shortly. It is all about hitting that sweet-spot of Flow where the challenge is just hard enough.

2 Athletic & Agility Challenge

Just as many activities contains challenges for the brain many other contains physical challenges for the muscles in some way. Be it agility, endurance, strength, or athletic ability. Almost all sports fall in the category and triggers us in so many ways. But there are also lots of other activities that we do just for fun or the challenge of intrinsic mastery. Here is also the sweet-spot of Flow somthing thats makes the activity engaging.

3 Competition

Many of us trigger by the need to compete and measure us against each other. Be it the sole competitor or a whole team against each other. This is a basic human need. The need to seem strong in front the tribe. And to seem extra useful for the Tribe. This usually followed by increased status, fame and attractiveness in the fair sex.

Competitions, Sports, Games and different forms of Challenges can been used to trigger this part of us.

4 Cooperation & Social

Humanities greatest feast is the ability to co-operate towards a common goal. A lone human had little chance of survival in the past. A great tribe of a 100 individuals could solve almost anything. We have it built into our DNA to work together and get rewarded for it on many levels. Jonathan Haidt explains this so well.

It feels great giving and helping others without the need for reciprocity. It is what binds tribes together.

Some people just like to play games as it is an activity we do together with other people. We like to do social activities.

5 Exploration

We humans are also explorers by nature. Not all, but some of us get the sudden urge to seek out new unknown territory to wander in. The lust for exploration is very strong and can take form in many shapes. This is very powerfully portrayed in the this epic clip narrated by Carl Sagan: Wanderers.

Activities that includes Adventure, Mystique and Puzzles Solving are all good ways to “explore” this drive in human nature.

6 Expression

One of our most unique traits is the ability and need to express ourselves. From how we look, dress and garnish our body to external expression through art and stories. The need to both be unique, and fit in, in the tribe at the same time. To put our twist on ourselves. And also the need to create, tinker, improve and “hack” things.

Radical Self-Expression is also part of one the 10 principles of Burning Man.

Making Things Magic!

Of course there are many more needs and desires that drive us humans like love, lust, belonging, righteousness, rebellion, fear, hate, revenge and need for the adrenaline rush. Still, these 6 big is a great way to start when designing an activity. Just focusing on one of them works great. Or combining them for a complex activity that attracts different people for different reasons works even gretater. Especial if it’s an activity done together with others.

With this is in mind, we can easier understand how to make an event more magic.

7 Harvesting – Collecting & Hoarding

There is also another aspect we trigger when we play games. Is has to do mostly with gathering side of Hunter gathering, that later lead to many of us being able to farm and harvest as a way of living. It’s both sowing things, and help them grow, and at last harvesting them.

We also like to collecting things. And when have things we like to sort and arrange them in different ways too. We get a kick out of finding that rare bush of berries or that occasional lagoon full of oysters. This is easily transferable into an activity or game of any kind where we can collect things and hunt down rare objects.

It’s okay to be hoarder 😉

Intrinsic Motivations and PERMA

When we know what kind of activity to make we can then increase the level of engagement people feel when doing it. There are many models and names for the intrinsic motivations we have. I chose to incorporate them into Martin Seligmans’s and Jane McGonigal’s PERMA model. In it we divide out internal motivations into 5 categories. One that can arguably be said is missing is the reward we feel during and after any physical performance. And ultimately like I do, the ability to put oneself into trance and triggering the Hive-Switch in the brain. Still here we go. Put more PERMA into your design:

P – Positive Emotions – We all like experiencing positive emotions like urgent optimismjoy, peace, gratitude, satisfaction, trust, pride, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, or love. These emotions move us along when triggering the other forms of motivations. Arguably we can put the feelings we feel when sexually aroused or the rush we feel when dancing with danger here too.

E – Engagement (or flow) – When a situation, task, or project are in the sweet-spot between our current skill level and the difficulty of the activity we often experience a state of flow. We lose track of time & space around us. We becomes totally engulfed in the activity at hand. The ability for a person or a whole team to themselves into flow has been measured to be the largest contributor to the success of any endeavour. This is linked to the oh so popular concept of following ones passion. This is the right path towards mastery.

R – Relationships – The need for belonging in a social context is very strong. We all want to be seen, heard and acknowledged within the tribe. It’s also more important to been known for contributing to the tribe than actually doing it without any recognition.

Being social with others is at the core of what it is to being human. When having good relationships with others, is when are at our best. Co-operation and friendly competition brings out the best in us. Make the user interact with others in the system or have them sharing about content in the system outside it.

M – Meaning – Meaning comes from creating a purposeful narrative about our lives. A story where we are part in something bigger than our-self. We will often sacralize something in the group that brings meaning to us. Finding ones purpose in life can be a powerful thing indeed. Humans have it in them seek meaning and spirituality. It’s what we do. Here is great clip about Burning Man explaining it all.

Designing activities with a greater purpose and a greater vision behind them is the way to go. So many things and leaders in our society, act without a clear vision where they are taking us.

A – Accomplishments – We often seek Mastery in some form. And completing our goals and following our core values. Or we can just get good feedback and rewards from an activity we are carrying out, which also give great satisfaction. Enhance the progress the user is making by giving them great feedback.

Integrate feedback into the activity loop of the current activity. We just love checking things of our to-do list. Or getting the great feeling of completing or launching things on a grander scale. When we down that boss in an epic game. Throw your arms in the air for that great Fiero moment.

What humanity desperately need right now is a vision where we can go as a species – #BurningMan

Another way and model that I also like is the one called the 4Ps by Storyarchitects with People – Purpose – Passion – Pleasure developed by Jasmine Idun Lyman. You can probably see where this model overlaps with the one above.

People

People – Purpose – Passion – Pleasure developed by Jasmine Idun Lyman

Flow – Mastery and Passion

On of the most talked about thing now is the notion that you should find and follow your passion. This is both true or as Tai Lopez calls it: Accurate. It’s all about design an activity with life-cycle aspect in mind. Start with Onboarding for the Newbie like Amy Jo Kim says. Then makes sure there are different challenges with increasing difficulty so that a participant can easily get into flow depending on their skill level. Not all event should have all skill levels depending on what type of activity it is. Over time a well design activity develops passion in the participant as they increase their skill level on their journey.

Tim Ferriss has a new TV show out called The Tim Ferriss Experiment where he tries to master 13 different challenging skills in just 5 days. In order to do this he needs apply a very precise set of points to stay in flow and take the quickest route towards the path of mastery. He shows us that it is possible to learn a skill very fast with the right and best teachers, science, technique, motivation, attitude and design thinking.

Stories – Ambassadors – Choice – Sacrifice – VIP – Adrenaline Rush – Prolonging

Stories
All great activities and products have an inbuilt story. One that we can tell our self while doing it. A kind of internal Self-Narration. And another that we can tell others and share before, during and after an activity. Here it helps designing content and context around the activity that can be shared and easily internalized.

We are basically a storytelling ape with a big brain that is excellent in recognising, enjoying and telling stories.

Sacrifice and Pain
Some activities also benefits if there is some kind of sacrifice, hardship and pain built into them. It scares some people away and attract others. Physical challenges and some competitions often use this to great benefit. The benefits of doing something hard and painful are often enjoyed after the event. When the pain is forgotten and all we have left is a good story. Doing hard stuff together with others and sharing the pain also brings people closer together and builds bonds.

It also makes people much more emotionally invested in the event. Which in turn makes for better long term commitment and creates excellent ambassadors.

Try to sell the story people can tell when they are part if an exclusive tribe that have mastered the challenge.

Scarcity and VIP
We all like to be VIP och part of some exclusive tribe sometimes. By making an activity only available to a selected few who either cued for the event or paid extra to get extra treatments and perks is great way to increase the overall attractiveness of the event. This is used with great success in crowdfunding activities with different perk levels. Here scarcity both in time and in the number of available slots serves a way to make people sign up faster.

Give people the ability to feel or dream about the status and exclusiveness that a special offer or VIP treatment brings.

Ambassadors
Any event or activity also needs great Ambassadors to flourish. Try to find people who are willing to invest time and energy into it. Or the people who are already doing it. The can be in it for some of the different reasons mentioned above. Interact with them. Give them VIP treatment. Ask them how you can improve the experience. Study them. Give them options to tell your story to more people.

Find your ambassadors and elevate them!

Feel the Rush
Some activities is all about the adrenaline or rush we can feel when doing something exciting and dangerous. Some people become adrenaline junkies and are always looking for more ways to experience more rushes. All things that get the human mind rushing is alluring.

How can you make your activity more exciting?

Choice and Autonomy
People like making choices. This makes us feel autonomous. It’s just that we are different when we think about what rules we want to follow when making choices and forming habits. Gretchen Rubin divides us into 4 different type of people when adopting new habits: Obligers, Questioners, Upholders and Rebels. Of course many of us like the excitement and angst when choosing between different options.

Give people the option to hack and improve the experience!

Prolong and improve the experience
If you are dealing with a event or happening in any way the is ways to prolong and extend the experience. Build up the campaign with onboarding and signaling. Like in the Tesla Launch.

Use social media and #hashtags to get people talking and interacting both with you and other fans long before the event. During the event get people talking using #Hashtags and other tools. make them livestream the event with their smartphones and do use a professional livestreaming team as well. After the event encourage people to share their experience with all kinds of media like videos, photos, blogs, podcasts, forums and Facebook groups.

Build content and a community around your event!

You won’t believe what happened next! [6 Signs You Are A Sharer]

As with any great activity it’s helps get momentum if people tell other people about it. We now live in a time when it’s not only mass media who gets to decide what gets attention and not. We humans have always shared stuff through language. It’s what we do. We have always done it on small limited scale within our tribe. It has just got a whole lot easier and scalable to share stuff. Then what do we share?

According to Jonathan Berger who has done som research on the subject it all boils down to six categories on why we share stuff. Not just online but we still share most of it mouth to mouth.

Social Currency — We share things that make us look good
Triggers — Top of mind, tip of tongue
Emotion — When we care, we share
Public — Built to show, built to grow
Practical Value — News you can use
Stories — Information travels under the guise of idle chatter

Build a story that it is easy to share into the activity you are designing.

That way you will get more attention to it. Unless you want to keep it a secret 😉

Think Big! Be Nice! Have Bold Visions of the Future!

I have been listing to 3 very inspiring women. Frida BoisenElaine EksvärdDarja Isaksson. It was all under the combined meet-up of IT-Solutions Expo and HR Summit Väst. They all gave 3 different views on the society, that is toppling the old industrialised economy. It’s called The Connection Economy. In a way it has always been about who you knew in the old society too. The difference was that it was only available to a selected few, who was in the right circles and that did know who to make friends with. Now with the power of the digital dimension and an emerging number of people who has studied both old and modern knowledge and science, there is paradigm shift already on the way.

So in honor of the 2015 International Women’s Day  theme “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” I give you:

Frida gives a very interesting and funny talk about her experience as Editor-in-chief at GT. She gives us 10 things about then going online.

Is Viral important? Can we only reach impact if we go viral? Both yes and no. Viral is important to get reach. On the other hand getting real connection with people one on one is now more possible, quicker and easier than ever before. It all depends on your message and your agenda.

The one thing to think about: Use your comedic talent. On the web and in presentation and talks. Humor always has a way to get into your heart. And satire has proven again and again through the ages to be a very effective tool to put the spotlight on anything fishy in society.

Frida Boisen

Frida Boisen –  What is in your heart?

Ask yourself: What is in your heart?

1. Spread love not hate online
Touch someone. Reach out. Be honest and real. All people have a heart to get through to.

2. Tell it first
In a way we humans always look to someone who is the fastest to deliver important news.

3. Tell it best
If you are not first to say something then say it better

4. Like and share
Be generous. All of us likes kindness
Use congratulations [Grattiseffekten]. We all know how good it feels to be flooded with kind words on our birthday or another important day on Facebook.

5. Connect first
Show someone you care about them. Tell them what you feel. Be then one who reaches out and shows initiative.

6. Join in on popular conversations and Hashtags
Be where the heat is.

7. Ping people.
Lift them up. Don’t gossip about them. Everyone likes be thought about in a good way.

8. Find your audience
Find your tribe. The Long Tail is becoming true. If Your trying to please everyone you will end up pleasing no one.

9. Replay back
Follow back. Don’t feed the trolls. Be active in constructive conversations.

10. Look after your brand
Be positive. Talk about your successes.

We must never accept online-hatred and Toxicness. We must talk about what Code of Conduct we use both online and in the flesh. It’s never okay do harm to one another.

Laugh at the trolls
1. Start a fire. Find your values. Talk to the heart.
2. Be top of mind. Follow! Like! Be generous, be everywhere.
3. Chose a small arena. Use micro targeting. Visit a Café.

Be bold. Be Daring. Be Vulnerable
Think Big. Tell Stories. Share Your Vision.
It’s Your Turn!

@ElaineEksvard [Elaine Eksvärd] – Rhetoric Ninja – Train Your Communication Skills

Elaine has so much to say on how we communicate in todays society. I’ll sum up below some of her important points.

Use the first 90 seconds of any encounter to define and make sure everyone you meet get the right picture of you and not a internal one filled with clichés and preconceptions. This is especially important for people like me who have chosen to wear my residual self image full out in the flesh of “The Matrix”.

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd – Connect to people

Communication is a skill and muscle that you must train every day.

Think about how you sound and what tonality you are using.

What is your posture and what body language are you using. If you don’t know, find out.

When someone are trying to portray their thoughts and opinions as facts there is an easy way to disarm them. Just say: Oh, that’s how you are felling? [Jasså, så känner du?] 🙂

Words and communication are power and we all need/want more influence (power).
So keep practicing your skills.

Get more social power and influence!

1. You have more power.
2. You can get more power.
3. Much More!

Be nice! Be vulnerable!
