The world is changing, more rapidly for every year. And there have been little to none design-thinking and visions behind how we shape this world of ours. That is, into a world we actually can, and want to live in for a long time – with prosperity.
Let’s Change That!
Sir Ken Robinson
We now live in the modern world. Our modern world. Like the many countless generations who came before us also did. The difference now is, that we have come to several limits in society and on Planet Earth, where we all face 3 complex challenges if we want to continue living on this planet in a modern way. I recently saw a short interview with Sir Ken Robinson where he sums them up, in a great way and also summarise what skills we need to solve them.
It can be done. Anything is possible, if we want to.
Ken Robinson on our 3 big challenges
The world is at a turning point. There are many environmental challenges. One of the most important that can’t be fixed later is climate change. The global warming and the acidification of our oceans can be irreversible. The UN set up 17 Global Goals on what to solve and here the 4 environmental goals are the most important. Here we can’t fail. Johan Rockström explains why in this English pod: Sommar i P1.
These goals are non negotiable for us, not Planet Earth.
We have never had more resources at our fingertips on Planet Earth. In fact we are using up more of them than the planet can sustain. The problem here is deciding how to distribute them using a story and a game called money. It’s not a very well designed game. In fact it’s a self emergent system built upon the human ability to feel greed among others. As the system of economy is played today we have a strong runaway leader problem. Where the ones who have the most, is getting even more and the rest of us is getting less.
Douglas Rushkoff gives a very compelling talk about how to change money game here at SXSW and in his book Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus.
Also money is really bad at deciding how we use our resources for the benefit of the entire human race. We need to redesign the entire economic game system. Today’s rules and system is rigged. We can design better rules. Take it from one, who plays a lot of Economic Boardgames.
It is a game! And we can fix it!
This is perhaps our biggest challenge. Because it’s the one that fixes the other two. How do we work together and play nice to each other? And how do we tell stories in a way that will lead us into a flourishing and prosperous future? By changing our cultures here on Spaceship Earth we can become a lot better at thinking about the other 2 in a better way. What stories are we currently telling about the future we want, and what could be better stories to tell? There are still powerful forces and stories in the world that would see the world burn for either personal power and gain or running a corrupted story towards another, not so desirable future. They are all stories that shapes our culture.
We need to tell a better more compelling story!
What Skills Do We Need?
What skills are essential for humanity to thrive in a modern world? To solve this big 3 challenges, there some skills that we need to ge a lot better at, if we are to master them. Sir Ken has identified 4 of them and I think they are the 4 essential ones. We need to start practice them ourself so that we can teach them to other members of society. Both young and old. Because these challenges need to be solved soon. We can’t afford to wait them out, in order to change the good old fashion way, by letting the old generations die off and be replaced them with young fresh thinkers.
The brain is very plastic and we can all learn them way faster than we think we can. As long as there is a story and a “Why” on where we are going and what we need to learn.
Start practicing today and spread the word!
1 – Creativity
The process of having original ideas that have value. The fruit of applied imagination. Both in Arts, Science, Technology and Human interaction. We can become a lot more curious. We can start to ask a lot more interesting question and by admitting that we know nothing.
We need more ideas. We need more silly ideas. The more creative ideas we have the more chance we have of finding the really good ones. Go out and create more. Experiment and build upon what others have done. Get Creative.
Practice having a lot of bad ideas!
Practice Creativity – Curiosity and Silliness!
2 – Compassion
It comes from imagination and seeing the world from someone else point of view. It’s Applied Empathy, the executive wing of empathy. To act on behalf on someone or prevent others from acting against themselves.
The cultural glue that keeps our communities together. It begins with self-understanding.
What are my beliefs and what do I hold sacred? Then we can start finding it in others.
We need to practice active compassion!
3 – Composure
The ability to be centred in yourself. Mindfulness. We need it to avoid spiritual deficit. And find our balance in the world. The spiritual part of being human. The internal energy that drives us and radiates to others.
What stories are we telling ourself and what stories are we telling others? We need to train ourself to become more human, in the good way. To enhance our best traits and dampen our worst in the process, feeding the good wolf.
Get on with Mindfulness and Spirituality!
4 – Collaboration
To face common challenges together. We need less competition in the world and more collaboration to face and solve common challenges.
By finding common ground we set common goals and start pulling in the same direction towards a desirable future. Start practicing collaboration in all forms and shapes. Pulling together will always beat people pulling by them self in different directions. The future is a team sport. And the goal is a prosperous society and a flourishing Spaceship Earth.
The Future is a Team Sport!
Creativity – Compassion – Composure – Collaboration
Digitalization & The Internet
We are also going to need tools to come true to these challenges. Some of the most important is The Internet and the Digitalization of our societies. Communication, Collaboration, AI och Big Data are some of the things that are going to get us there much faster! This is what we can use our creativity and innovation for 🙂
Teachers & Mentors
Put your own mask on first!
We need great teachers and mentors who can help develop these 4 key skills. As a teacher or a mentor you need to develop them in yourself first, before teaching them to others.
We need more great mentors who can guide us forward in life, both formal and informal. Guides who can open doors and point us in the right direction. We can all become these people.
Like Yoda to Luke & Tron to Beck & Master Shifu to Po & Morpheus to Neo.
Think about the stories we can tell about life on Spaceship Earth.
Go be someone’s Yoda! Someone’s Morpheus.
And wake them up from The Matrix
I’m Captain Future!
Every person young or old should have the opportunity to become a changemaker
