I speak Internetz [What was yours?]
It was 20 years ago in 1993. I was studying entrepreneurship [Utvecklingsingenjör] at Halmstad University. We decided that we should go to Hong Kong and China for our graduation trip. Having just discovered internet myself took it upon me to make a contact in Hong Kong before the trip. Using the Mosaic Web browser I found the Hong Kong University website and an email address. I mailed them and asked for a contact person. They replied with contact email to student there.
I stared trading email with a Scotsman studying there and it was very exiting for me at the time. I was a really shy person back then and found it difficult to speak with anyone I didn’t know. So this new way of communicating really changed things for me.
Finally I had found voice I was comfortable speaking in. I speak Internetz
Unfortunately I never got to meet the Scotsman. Some time before we where going there he had to go home for some family business. But he did pass the torch to a Chinese girl studying there, who I took up email-contact with. So when getting there I had got a phone-number and made a date to meet us at the hotel where we staying. With great excitement she showed up. She invited us with her family to a local restaurant where they had no experience meeting Europeans before. They teached us how to eat with sticks and all the local Chinese customs when eating. We got served some Chinese beer in really small glasses. When we wanted more than one glass the girl came to us and said that her father was really worried. He had heard some crazy stories of drunken Europeans getting drunk and loosing control. We told them that there was really nothing to worry about unless they served us much, much more beer 🙂
She also told us that he was really worried. Because it was custom for him to pay for the food for all of us. We assured him that it was really ok in this instance to break the tradition and let us pay for ourselves. And we did have really good use of everything they taught us for the rest our trip in Hong Kong and our 4 day visit to China and Guangzhou [Canton].
Social Media Evolution [Me becoming a Futurist]
Social Media has come a long way since 1993. But for me my world changed back then and it has continued to change ever since. In 1996 we started to chat and build scripts in IRC using the mIRC client. And I started using ICQ. I was instantly hooked. From here on I started exploring all internet communication tools as they came.
With the vision of the movie Ghost in the Shell in mind I now begun thinking of the future almost every day to come. The Futurist in me was born. In spirit of this I started arranging Future and Cyber Parties in the 90-ties.
All things change in a dynamic environment [Your effort to remain the same is what limits you]
The Network Society is now a real thing happening around us.
You’re talking about redefining my identity.
I want a guarantee that I can still be myself.
There isn’t one. Why would you wish to?
All things change in a dynamic environment.
Your effort to remain the same is what limits you.
But you still haven’t answered my earlier question.
Why did you pick me?
Because we are more alike than you realize.
We resemble each other’s essence, mirror images of one another’s psyche.
Listen. I am connected to a vast network…
that has been beyond your reach and experience.
To humans, it is like staring at the sun,
a blinding brightness that conceals a source of great power.
We have been subordinate to our limitations until now.
The time has come to cast aside these bonds…
and to elevate our consciousness to a higher plane
It is time to become a part of all things. — Ghost in the Shell, 1995
